Book Do Liquidity Constraints Matter for New Entrepreneurs

Download or read book Do Liquidity Constraints Matter for New Entrepreneurs written by Kevin Moore and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Numerous studies have found a positive relationship between wealth and entering entrepreneurship, and interpret this as evidence of the existence of liquidity constraints. However, recent research has shown that the relationship between wealth and entering entrepreneurship may be non-linear and only significant for high-wealth households; this result cannot be interpreted as evidence of liquidity constraints. Using data from the SCF, we construct a proxy for wealth based on the household's home equity wealth at the time of the entrepreneurial decision. The results provide further evidence that the relationship between wealth and entering entrepreneurship is only significant for high-wealth households and that liquidity constraints do not appear to bind for the majority of new entrepreneurs. Possible explanations for the relationship between wealth and becoming an entrepreneur include lower risk aversion and differences in the types of businesses started by high-wealth households"--Federal Reserve Board web site.

Book Personal Wealth from a Global Perspective

Download or read book Personal Wealth from a Global Perspective written by James B. Davies and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is great media fascination in the activities and lifestyles of the super-rich. But personal wealth is also important for those of more modest means as a store of potential consumption, as a cushion against emergencies, and as collateral for business and investment loans. This book is the first global study of household assets and debts. It documents not only the level, distribution, and trend of wealth holdings in rich nations, but also addresses developing countries like China and India. The situation in Latin America and Africa is given attention along with the experiences of Russia and other transition countries. Components of household wealth like financial assets, land, and property are examined, as well as the gender division. Worldwide, it is estimated that the richest 2% own more than half of total global wealth, and that this elite group resides almost exclusively in North America, Western Europe, and rich Asia-Pacific countries.

Book Identifying Binding Constraints to Growth

Download or read book Identifying Binding Constraints to Growth written by Mr.Mauricio Vargas and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As emphasized by Hausmann, Rodrik and Velasco, the policy challenge of boosting growth requires prioritization and identifying what are the most binding constraints. This paper draws on firm-level data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey, which suggests that the obstacles for the functioning of firms is related to firm size. Recognizing the potential endogeneity and simultaneity between firms' constraints and firm size, we implement an Ordered-Probit model with a potential categorical endogenous regressor to estimate, for the case of Bolivia, the conditional probability of facing obstacles given the firm size category, while controlling for other factors. The results confirm the importance of allowing for the roles of firm size in identifying constraints and suggest priorities for policies to remove constraints to economic performance.

Book Public Policy and the Economics of Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Public Policy and the Economics of Entrepreneurship written by Douglas Holtz-Eakin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-12-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking collection of essays by leading economists examines different aspects of entrepreneurship and its relation to public policy. Entrepreneurship has been a subject of much recent discussion among academics and policymakers because of the belief that it invigorates the economy—producing greater productivity, more jobs, and higher economic growth. President George W. Bush promoted his economic plan by pointing to its encouragement of entrepreneurship. Yet, despite its importance, the topic of entrepreneurship is underrepresented in the economics literature. The contributors to Public Policy and the Economics of Entrepreneurship examine different aspects of entrepreneurship and its relation to public policy to help us reach a better understanding of the economic role of entrepreneurs. The contributors, all prominent economists, first consider what policies effectively encourage entrepreneurship, discussing a possible role for government in venture capital markets, the effect of the tax code's subsidy of health insurance for the self-employed, and the impact of banking deregulation on entrepreneurial activity. Two contributors then examine entrepreneurship in "unexpected places"—not small businesses, but large pharmaceutical firms and nonprofit organizations. The final essays explore the effect of entrepreneurship on inequality, looking at statistical evidence of upward mobility for self-employed blacks and Hispanics and discussing the effect on entrepreneurial activity of policies to reduce wealth inequality. The contributors hope, by offering a rigorous economic examination of entrepreneurship, to foster better public policies that encourage and support entrepreneurial activity.

The disciplines involved are numerous, as are the topics of interest, with substantial efforts to enhance the existing knowledge. The articles address a variety of topics ranging from self-employment, technology, growth patterns and job creation, and success and failure rates, to historical, conceptual and comparative international approaches. “This book takes entrepreneurship beyond the individual, size of the venture, entrepreneurial personality, and looks at entrepreneurship as a long term complex process that is heterogeneous, content dependent with an emphasis on innovation and growth. A must read for individuals interested in entrepreneurship, today and in the future, on a domestic and global basis.” – Robert D. Hisrich, Director – Walker Center and Garvin Professor of Global Entrepreneurship, Thunderbird School of Global Management “Entrepreneurship is perhaps not just the most multifaceted but also the most important concept of the modern socio-economic disciplines. Book The Allocation of Limited Entrepreneurial Attention

Download or read book The Allocation of Limited Entrepreneurial Attention written by Sharon Gifford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Allocation of Limited Entrepreneurial Attention examines the implications of allocating limited entrepreneurial attention among activities or projects. This book maintains that attention is simultaneously limited in that a decision maker can pay attention to only one thing at a time, and entrepreneurial in that it may be allocated to evaluating a potential new project for possible adoption. However, since the outcome of the allocation of attention is not certain, the number of projects among which attention can be allocated is stochastic and the maximum number of projects is endogenously determined by the optimal allocation of limited entrepreneurial attention and describes the implications of this analysis for a number of economic problems.

Book Reading the Minds of Investors

Download or read book Reading the Minds of Investors written by James A. Clouse and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes in expected future short rates are then further decomposed into portions attributable to changes in the expected future paths for inflation, the unemployment rate, and GDP growth and also to a fourth factor interpreted as changes in the "stance of monetary policy." The model results indicate that changes in long-term interest rates, on average, have been about equal parts changes in term premia and changes in expected future short rates. Changes in expected future short rates seem to be driven largely by changes in the stance of monetary policy and in the outlook for inflation while the estimated influence of changes in the outlook for the unemployment rate and GDP growth is more muted"--Abstract.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance written by Douglas Cumming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of Entrepreneurial Finance involves many issues, including but not limited to the risks and returns to being an entrepreneur, financial contracting, business planning, capital gaps and the availability of capital, market booms and busts, public policy and international differences in entrepreneurial finance stemming from differences in laws, institutions and culture. As these issues are so extremely broad and complex, the academic and practitioner literature on topic usually focuses on at most one or two of these issues at one time. The Oxford Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance provides a comprehensive picture of issues dealing with different sources of entrepreneurial finance and different issues with financing entrepreneurs. The Handbook comprises contributions from 48 authors based in 12 different countries. It is organized into seven parts, the first of which introduces the issues, explains the organization of the Handbook, and briefly summarizes the contributions made by the authors in each of the chapters. Part II covers the topics pertaining to financing new industries and the returns and risk to being an entrepreneur. Part III deals with entrepreneurial capital structure. Part IV discusses business planning, funding and funding gaps in entrepreneurial finance with a focus on credit markets. Part V provides analyses of the main alternative sources of entrepreneurial finance. Part VI considers issues in public policy towards entrepreneurial finance. Part VII considers international differences in entrepreneurial finance, including analyses of entrepreneurial finance in weak institutional environments as well as microfinance.

Book The Reform of October 1979

Download or read book The Reform of October 1979 written by David Earl Lindsey and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The record suggests that the reform was adopted when the FOMC became convinced that its earlier gradualist strategy using finely tuned interest rate moves had proved inadequate for fighting inflation and reversing inflation expectations. The new plan had to break dramatically with established practice, allow for the possibility of substantial increases in short-term interest rates, yet be politically acceptable, and convince financial markets participants that it would be effective. The new operating procedures were also adopted for the pragmatic reason that they would likely succeed"--Abstract.

Book Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth

Download or read book Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth written by David B. Audretsch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By serving as a conduit for knowledge spillovers, entrepreneurship is the missing link between investments in new knowledge and economic growth. The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship provides not just an explanation of why entrepreneurship has become more prevalent as the factor of knowledge has emerged as a crucial source for comparative advantage, but also why entrepreneurship plays a vital role in generating economic growth. Entrepreneurship is an important mechanism permeating the knowledge filter to facilitate the spill over of knowledge and ultimately generate economic growth.
