Book Do Banks Benefit from Internationalization Revisiting the Market Power Risk Nexus

Download or read book Do Banks Benefit from Internationalization Revisiting the Market Power Risk Nexus written by Claudia M. Buch and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments on international financial markets have called the benefits of bank globalization into question. Large, internationally active banks have acquired substantial market power, and international activities have not necessarily made banks less risky. Yet, surprisingly little is known about the actual link between bank internationalization, bank risk, and market power. Analyzing this link is the purpose of this paper. We jointly estimate the determinants of risk and market power of banks, and we analyze the effects of changes in terms of the number of foreign countries (the extensive margin) and the volume of foreign assets (the intensive margin). Our paper has four main findings. First, there is a strong negative feedback effect between risk and market power. Second, banks with higher shares of foreign assets, in particular those held through foreign branches, have higher market power at home. Third, holding assets in a large number of foreign countries tends to increase bank risk. Fourth, the impact of internationalization differs across banks from different banking groups and of different size.

Book The Internationalization of Financial Services in Asia

Download or read book The Internationalization of Financial Services in Asia written by Stijn Claessens and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: April 1998 Asian countries should consider the benefits of opening their financial service sectors more quickly-at the same time that they are liberalizing capital accounts and deregulating domestic financial markets. The internationalization of financial services-eliminating discrimination between the treatment of foreign and domestic providers of financial services and removing barriers to the cross-border provision of financial services-is of global interest, especially in Asia. Most of Asia limits the entry of foreign financial firms much more than otherwise comparable countries do. Empirical evidence for Asia and elsewhere suggests that this slows down institutional development and that, as a result, it costs more to provide financial services. Asian countries could benefit from accelerating the opening of the financial services sector, in conjunction with the further liberalization of capital accounts and domestic deregulation of financial markets. Apart from other benefits, internationalization helps build more robust, efficient financial systems by introducing international practices and standards; by improving the quality, efficiency, and breadth of financial services; and by allowing more stable sources of funds. The ongoing WTO negotiation of financial services under GATS gives countries the opportunity to commit to opening their financial sectors. Safeguards can be built into the process, and the liberalization can be phased in gradually. This paper-a product of the Economic Policy Division, Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network-is part of a larger effort in the network to study financial reform in developing countries. The paper was written during the summer of 1997, before the East Asia financial crisis and before the conclusion of the WTO negotiations in December 1997.

Book Internationalization of Banks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews banking internationalization by considering the new paradigms of globalization. The author primarily analyses why and how banks internationalize through equity deals, and the effect of regulation and market integration on the formation of deals, which allows authorities to manage the banking structure. This is a unique work that describes the relevance of the ownership model and cultural features of the partners and the key factors that help in choosing the market in which the banks bring activities abroad. The book addresses market characteristics, and new scenarios that should impact banks’ internationalization strategies and ability to achieve success in deals that capture the attention of both researchers and practitioners.

Book The Internationalization Process of Banks

Download or read book The Internationalization Process of Banks written by Mireille Ibrahim El-Khoury and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, companies act world-wide to gain success and increase the growth and profit. Nowadays, they need to do this to be competitive on the ever changing market. One of the most important things to have in mind when thinking of expanding to other countries is which entry mode to choose. There are several ways of entering a market and if you do it right you might be very successful, but if you do not spend time on this decision the internationalization process can become very short and the company can lose a lot of capital. With this thesis I want to investigate how BBAC bank, a Lebanese bank made its presence into the international market, which kind of entry modes it went for. In the thesis I have also gone in to the factors that have been of high importance when making the decision on why it chose the Iraqi market and also which kind of entry mode. My main findings after having made this thesis is that it was the profit and growth potential the was the main driving force for establishing on the Iraqi market, but also the short distance and the low costs of going in on the market, and even the know-how of the market in question and resources of the company have been important factors.

Book Global Banks and International Shock Transmission

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global banks played a significant role in transmitting the 2007-09 financial crisis to emerging-market (EM) economies. The authors examine adverse liquidity shocks on main developed-country banking systems and their relationships to EM across Europe, Asia, and Latin Amer., isolating loan supply from loan demand effects. Loan supply in EM across Europe, Asia, and Latin Amer. was affected significantly through three separate channels: (1) a contraction in direct, cross-border lending by foreign banks; (2) a contraction in local lending by foreign banks¿ affiliates in EM; and (3) a contraction in loan supply by domestic banks, resulting from the funding shock to their balance sheets induced by the decline in interbank, cross-border lending. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the impact of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the financial sector. It highlights the benefits these technologies bring in terms of financial deepening and efficiency, while raising concerns about its potential in widening the digital divide between advanced and developing economies. The paper advances the discussion on the impact of this technology by distilling and categorizing the unique risks that it could pose to the integrity and stability of the financial system, policy challenges, and potential regulatory approaches. The evolving nature of this technology and its application in finance means that the full extent of its strengths and weaknesses is yet to be fully understood. Given the risk of unexpected pitfalls, countries will need to strengthen prudential oversight.

Book The Un Profitability of Bank Internationalization

Download or read book The Un Profitability of Bank Internationalization written by Arjen Mulder and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate the impact of internationalization of banks on their performance. Using a novel data set comprising of the world's 46 largest banks spanning 1980-2004, we find that internationalization decreases performance measures as return-on assets or return-on-sales. That negative effect is magnified when controlling for risk or for response time lags. At best, internationalization has a very weak positive effect on performance on a forward-looking performance measure as Tobin's Q. We explain this discrepancy in performance by means of nonparametric tests, and find weak evidence for a nonlinear pattern in which internationalization may deliver value for banks beyond an internationalization threshold of approximately 50 percent.

Book Renminbi Internationalization

Download or read book Renminbi Internationalization written by Barry Eichengreen and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Asian Development Bank Institute publication Meet the next global currency: the Chinese renminbi, or the "redback." Following the global financial crisis of 2008, China's major monetary policy objective is the internationalization of the renminbi, that is, to create an inter-national role for its currency akin to the international role currently played by the U.S. dollar. Renminbi internationalization is a hot topic, for good reason. It is, essentially, a window onto the Chinese government's aspirations and the larger process of economic and financial transformation. Making the renminbi a global currency requires rebalancing the Chinese economy, developing the country's financial markets and opening them to the rest of the world, and moving to a more flexible exchange rate. In other words, the internationalization of the renminbi is a monetary and financial issue with much broader supra-monetary and financial implications. This book offers a new perspective on the larger issues of economic, financial, and institutional change in what will eventually be the world's largest economy.

Book International Banking and Financial Centers

Download or read book International Banking and Financial Centers written by Yoon S. Park and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of international financial centers (IFCs) has paralleled the rapid expansion of international banking and Eurocurrency activities. During the past decade and a half, the international banking and financial markets have experienced phenomenal growth along with the parallel expansion of IFCs. The size of the Eurocurrency market grew from $110 billion in 1970 to over $4,000 billion by 1987, while the total international assets of all banking institutions rose from $130 billion to $4,800 billion during the same period. Some of the preeminent IFCs are playing a major role in the international financial markets, as demonstrated by the size of their international assets: Bahamas ($144 billion), Cayman Islands ($174 billion), Singapore ($150 billion), Hong Kong ($130 billion), Bahrain ($46 billion), and Panama ($32 billion). The patterns of Euroborrowing and Eurolending activities in these IFCs have been undergoing major changes. These changes came about as a result of the introduction of the floating exchange rate system in 1973, recent financial deregulation, internationalization of the financial markets, securitization of financial assets and liabilities, and global financial innovations. Since the pioneering work of Kindleberger in 1974 on the formation of financial centers, there has not been a comprehensive study to reflect the recent developments, trends and the mystique that have surrounded the IFCs' functions and operations in the international money and capital markets.
