Book excerpt: Mar&ía de Zayas y Sotomayor (1590&–1650?) published two collections of novellas, Novelas amorosas y exemplares (1637) and Desenga&ños amorosos (1647), which were immensely popular in her day. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Victorian and bourgeois sensibilities exiled her &“scandalous&” works to the outer fringes of serious literature. Over the last two decades, however, she has gained an enthusiastic and ever-expanding readership, drawing intense critical attention and achieving canonical status as a major figure of the Spanish Golden Age. In this first comprehensive study of Zayas&’s prose, Margaret R. Greer explores the relationship between narration and desire, analyzing both the &“desire for readers&” displayed by Zayas in her Prologue and the sexual desire that drives the telling within the novellas themselves. Greer examines Zayas&’s narrative strategies through the twin lenses of feminist and psychoanalytic theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dona Maria De Zayas Y Sotomayor: A Contribution to the Study of Her Works The following study is part of a work now in preparation on the subject of the little-known writings of Dona Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor. This work contemplates a comparatively exhaustive treatment of the author's short stories, her poetry, her play Traicion en la amistad, and the relative importance of these in literature. It will be accompanied in its completed form by as detailed a bibliography as possible of the entire field. On a subject as extensive as this, it has not been feasible to compress into these few pages more than the discovered facts of the author's life, her salient ideas as exposed in her works, a sketch of the general framework of her short stories, and a study of two of them in particular - El jardin enganoso and El castigo de la miseria. That Dona Maria was an ardent feminist is displayed throughout her stories; and this characteristic trait I have stressed as being especially interesting and significant. According to traditional studies of this period, however, men seemed to be the only participants. Now in Dramas of Distinction, Teresa Scott Soufas offers the first book-length critical study of five important women playwrights: Angela de Azevedo, Ana Caro Mallen de Soto, Leonor de la Cueva y Silva, Feliciana Enriquez de Guzman, and Marfa de Zayas y Sotomayor. By locating the plays within their period, Soufas avoids universalizing women without regard to history. Her approach transcends the simple measurement of women authors against male models. Confronting the issue of female silence demanded by seventeenth-century Spanish patriarchy, Soufas compares the drive to limit and contain theater space to Renaissance society's efforts to limit and contain women. Yet these dramatists still found ways to question their own roles and male authority. Caro and Cueva investigate the difficult relationship between women and monarchy. Azevedo explores the ways Renaissance women become commodities in the marriage market. Cross-dressed women characters add carnivalesque implications to three plays in which gender identities are unstable. Finally, Enrfquez challenges the precepts of Lope de Vega's comedia nueva as she attempts to adhere to classical formal principles and reject the public playhouse. As a companion to the recently published anthology Women's Acts, also edited by Soufas, this study significantly contributes not only to Hispanic studies but also to women's studies, Renaissance studies, and comparative literature.

Now available for the first time in English translation, the ten examplary novellas are set within an encompassing frame story that continues from the first collection, The Enchantments of Love: Amorous and Exemplary Novels, published in 1637. Both collections of love stories were immediately popular because of the novelty of their plots and the gender of their author. What is new in the disenchantments is the deliberately feminist purpose stated in the rules for telling stories: only women are to narrate "true cases intended to disenchant women about men's deceptions," pointedly denying men the opportunity to dominate the storytelling. In the frame, however, the subtly ironic commentaries on the stories highlight the differences between masculine and feminine points of view. The conclusion of the frame reiterates the exemplary message that women are safe from men's physical and psychological abuse only in the sisterhood of the convent. These ten sensational and bizarre tales focus on the ways lovers deceive women in order to "get their way," through magic, cross dressing as women, and rape—to the torture and murder of innocent women at the hands of their protectors—their fathers, brothers, and husbands. The graphic depictions of women's mutilated bodies are unprecedented in Western literature, as is the meticulous description of domestic violence that has traditionally remained private and hidden. A fascinating dimension of these fast-paced narratives is what they suggest through omission, silence, and ambiguous detail: the untold story that fires the reader's imagination.
