Book Historical Dictionary of Djibouti

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Djibouti written by Daoud Aboubaker Alwan and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established as a country a little more than a century ago, born as an independent republic in June 1977, Djibouti is among the youngest as well as the smallest states in Africa. Yet its strategic location at the crossroads of the maritime trade routes between Africa, Asia and Europe turned this tiny spot on the world map into a vital player in twentieth century geopolitics. This historical dictionary has been conceived not as a history book but as a reading grid for the major historical items that are still molding the country's social, political and economic life.

  • Pages : 3951 pages

Download or read book Africana written by Anthony Appiah and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety years after W.E.B. Du Bois first articulated the need for "the equivalent of a black Encyclopedia Britannica," Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates Jr., realized his vision by publishing Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience in 1999. This new, greatly expanded edition of the original work broadens the foundation provided by Africana. Including more than one million new words, Africana has been completely updated and revised. New entries on African kingdoms have been added, bibliographies now accompany most articles, and the encyclopedia's coverage of the African diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean has been expanded, transforming the set into the most authoritative research and scholarly reference set on the African experience ever created. More than 4,000 articles cover prominent individuals, events, trends, places, political movements, art forms, business and trade, religion, ethnic groups, organizations and countries on both sides of the Atlantic. African American history and culture in the present-day United States receive a strong emphasis, but African American history and culture throughout the rest of the Americas and their origins in African itself have an equally strong presence. The articles that make up Africana cover subjects ranging from affirmative action to zydeco and span over four million years from the earlies-known hominids, to Sean "Diddy" Combs. With entries ranging from the African ethnic groups to members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Africana, Second Edition, conveys the history and scope of cultural expression of people of African descent with unprecedented depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the Horn of Africa, Djibouti is a small country that is often overlooked on the continent. It is one of the smallest countries in Africa, with a population of just over one million people. Despite its size, Djibouti is strategically located at the mouth of the Red Sea and is a hub for international trade and military operations. This has led to the construction of several major ports, including the Port of Djibouti, which is one of the busiest in Africa. The country is also home to several foreign military bases, including those of France, the United States, and China. As a result, Djibouti has become an important player in regional politics and is often referred to as the "gateway to Africa". However, despite its geopolitical significance, Djibouti faces several challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and political instability. The country's economy is largely dependent on foreign aid and military spending, which has resulted in an unequal distribution of wealth and limited economic opportunities for the majority of its citizens.

Book The Political Economy of African Famine

Download or read book The Political Economy of African Famine written by R. E. Downs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991. This volume explores the combination of political and economic forces that influence different levels of food supply. The book begins with a discussion of famine theories, ranging from cultural ecology to neo-Marxism. Following this survey is a series of essays by anthropologists, geographers, economists and development practitioners that explores the role of Western institutions in African famine, analyzes famine in particular countries, and documents the relationship between famine and gender. This book takes an unusually broad look at famine by including analyses of countries where hunger has rarely been studied and by examining African famine from both African and Western perspectives. Its concluding proposals for eradicating famine make innovative and provocative contributions to current global debates on food and nutrition.

Download or read book The Foundings written by William E. McCommons and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2000-12-06 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story begins about 4 years ago when my grandson, Brandon, was restricted to a diet free of gluten, wheat, eggs, dairy, and peanuts. I was totally bewildered. How could I possibly cook properly for him and his family? I only remember once that I wept in my kitchen pantry out of frustration, but many times I felt that inadequate. Brandon's mom gave me a couple of recipes, which I prepared on every visit. I also had a house rule that no one was allowed to eat forbidden foods in his presence. I felt that I was doing all that I could until one innocent remark changed my life. We were in a grocery store and Brandon took my hand, led me to a display, and said longingly, "Look, Nana, those are called muffins". It brought tears to my eyes, and I vowed to myself that I would learn to cook delicious foods - gluten, wheat, dairy, egg, and peanut free. It has been a journey of trial and error. I cannot tell you that I have successes every time, but imagination and persistence has paid off. I have felt led to write this book, and it is my wish that it will help your family as much as it has helped mine. Barbara Wells
