Book Appreciating Melodrama

Download or read book Appreciating Melodrama written by Piyush Roy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appreciating Melodrama: Theory and Practice in Indian Cinema and Television seeks to identify and appreciate the continual influence of the ancient Sanskrit drama treatise, the Natyashastra, and its theory of aesthetics, the rasa theory, on the unique narrative attributes of Indian cinema. This volume of work critically engages with a representative sample of landmark films from 100 years of Indian film history across genres, categories, regions and languages. This is the first time a case study-based rigorous academic review of popular Indian cinema is done using the Indian aesthetic appreciation theory of rasa (affect/emotion). It proposes a theoretical model for film appreciation, especially for content made in the melodramatic genre, and challenges existing First World/Euro-American film criticism canons and notions that privilege cinematic 'realism' over other narrative forms, which will generate passionate debates for and against its propositions in future studies and research on films. This is a valuable academic reference book for students of film and theatre, world cinema and Indian cinema studies, South Asian studies and culture, Indology and the 'Sociology of Cinema' studies. It is a must-have reference text in the curriculum of both practical-oriented acting schools, as well as courses and modules focusing on a theoretical study of cinema, such as film criticism and appreciation, and the history of movies and performance studies.

Book excerpt: What do the TV shows we’re watching tell us about ourselves? Television is the single most powerful and dynamic agent of change in India today. It is also the country’s most popular and accessible form of entertainment. Remote Control examines three kinds of programming—24x7 news, soap operas and reality shows—that have changed Indian television forever, and analyzes how these three genres, while drawing on different sources, are hybridized, indigenized and manage to ultimately project a distinctively Indian identity. Shoma Munshi’s book shows us how everyday reality in India in the twenty-first century shapes television; and how television, in turn, shapes us.

Book Deconstructing the Stereotype Reconsidering Indian Culture Literature and Cinema

Download or read book Deconstructing the Stereotype Reconsidering Indian Culture Literature and Cinema written by Kaustav Chakraborty and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stereotypes are mere 'pictures in our heads'. Prejudice and suspicion against all that is perceived of as ‘different’ give rise to cultural stereotypes. Creating stereotypes also involves connecting the created categories with values, equipping the categories with an ideational label. Thus, stereotypes often contain the presupposition that one’s own group represents the normal, or even universal and that one’s own culture and ist socially construed concepts of reality is superior and normative in relation to other cultures and world-views. The stereotypes are not just one person’s private attitude but are always shared with a larger socio-cultural group. Stereotypes result in simplifications that prevent people from seeing the ‘otherized’ individuals as they truly are. This book, aims at transgressing the boundaries of the strategically generated stereotyped image of a homogenous Indian culture. Rather, by highlighting the marginalised issues related to class, caste and gender, this book, by citing examples of select Indian literary and cinematic representations, argues that the stigma related to the non-conformist /alternative/minority identities, is baseless and fraudulent.

Book excerpt: Life is a blank canvas that the deity has made. He is the architect of our existence. He did, however, leave the canvas blank in order to create the best picture of our lives. It must be performed entirely by us and not by anyone else. Allowing someone else to design it may result in dull colours on your painting. Experiment with new colours on your canvas to get the most out of it, as it is properly stated. You are a self-taught artist who creates your own life. No one can create a better canvas than you. Give it your all since an artist is only concerned with filling the canvas with authentic colours. “The Blank Canvas” consists of several co-authors from all over the globe who have dedicated their inked verses as a poem, quote, micro tale or a short story which revolves around the open theme. We are hoping for the great success of this book, a free anthology launched by The Little Booktique Hub Publication in which none of the co-authors are charged a single penny throughout the publishing process.
