Book excerpt: "In this book Thomas Aiello considers the special cultural function of professional basketball in the Deep South for more than a quarter century between 1947 and 1979. Next to their counterparts in baseball and football, basketball fans enjoyed a unique intimacy with their favorite players, who showed more of their bodies and had nothing covering their face and head. For this and other similar reasons, blackness simply mattered more in basketball than it did in other sports. By the time Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, professional basketball was 47.5 percent black and becoming known as a "black sport." That being the case, the South's relationship with professional basketball was more fraught, and made the survival of southern teams more tenuous, fan support more fickle, and racial incidents between players and fans more hostile"--

Book excerpt: Pinky, A Memoir of WWII, is the first of four volumes about a young man who couldn't wait to join the U. S. Navy and go to the Pacific. In this volume T. J. Thiggens is sixteen when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. He agrees with his mother to complete the school year 1942-1943 if she will sign his enlistment papers. He goes through boot camp at Farragut, Idaho, and is transferred to Shoemaker, California, to await orders to ship overseas. On his eighteenth birthday he boards the SS Eugene Skinner for the South Pacific; and after 23 days he arrived in New Caledonia. There he attends a Fleet Radio School, works for a time at the COMSOPAC Service Squadron; and, after almost a year on this island, he finally gets a transfer to a wooden subchaser, which is headed north into the War Zone. There are five subchasers in Noumea Harbor being converted to LCC's (landing craft, communications); and because they each have a Walt Disney cartoon character painted on their bridges, they are nicknamed "MacArthur's Donald Duck Navy". This part of the story about five wooden subchasers ends just as T. J. becomes the 'second' radio on the USS SC-995.

Book excerpt: "When NHL commissioner Clarence Campbell announced that Atlanta had received an NHL franchise, ownership was tasked with selling a northern game that most of the city's Black residents had never experienced. The team marketed itself to upper-middle class White residents by portraying a hockey game as an exclusive event-with the whiteness of the players themselves providing critical support for that claim. In a city that had given Hank Aaron a cool reception and had effectively guaranteed the whitening of a successful Black basketball team, the prospect of a sport with White players was an inherent draw that leaders hoped would mitigate White flight from the city and draw residents of the surrounding suburbs back to the city center. The team was ultimately marketed as the Flames, a reference to William Sherman's burning of Atlanta and the city's rise from the ashes to its rightful place as a Deep South hub of culture and economy. It wasn't a name with specific racial coding, but with the city's racial history and the Lost Cause iconography that dotted its landscape, a Civil War name could only add to the impression of a White team playing to White fans in a majority Black city. Thus the politics of civic development and race combined yet again, but this time in a form foreign to most longtime sports enthusiasts in the Deep South"--

Book Raleigh s Reynolds Coliseum

Download or read book Raleigh s Reynolds Coliseum written by Craig Chappelow and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002-08-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take the best seat in the house for this thrilling history that's so much more than the story of a building: discover the triumphs, the tears, and the tenacity of North Carolina sports and its legends. For more than half a century, William Neal Reynolds Coliseum was at the forefront of college basketball. When filled to capacity, 12,000 fans joined together to create the noise and heat that defined game night. Indeed, Reynolds Coliseum brought big-time basketball to the South. Most area residents know Reynolds as home to the popular Dixie Classic basketball tournament and the North Carolina State University's Wolfpack championship sports teams. Surprisingly, this building was not constructed specifically for basketball. Like the state of North Carolina, the coliseum's origins grew from agriculture, and it was significantly shaped by the impact of World War II. As home to the long-standing Friends of the College series, the coliseum helped extend cultural events to the general public by promoting "seven shows for seven dollars." It has hosted presidents and protesters, circuses and symphonies, tractor demonstrations and rock concerts. And yes, for one ten-year stretch, more people watched college basketball games in Reynolds Coliseum than in any other campus arena in America. This volume captures more than 50 years of North Carolina history from the best seat in the house, highlighting the people and events that shaped the building as much as any architect's pencil.
