Book excerpt: Several jurisdictions have attempted to render divorce more harmonious by abolishing matrimonial 'fault' and facilitating the resolution of divorce disputes by mediation. In Britain, these provisions appear in the Family Law Act 1996. The book presents a challenge to the underlying assumptions that conflict and the adversarial system are undesirable. Its focus is on adults’ experiences of divorce. In a series of interviews, divorcing people told their own stories of divorce. The personal narratives revealed that divorce can be emotionally traumatic, but it has positive sides too. The emotions of divorce are not pathological , but are readily explicable as ordinary human coping strategies , in the context of the real material privations that many divorcing people suffer. These coping strategies often involve conflict and acrimony. From a psychodynamic perspective, it is argued that these are integral, and psychologically necessary, aspects of the divorce process. This book is particularly topical in the light of the recent decision of the British Government to postpone the implementation of the Family Law Act 1996 and the acknowledged need for research to inform policy.

In addition, divorce comes with multiple legal, financial, parental, emotional and practical issues that require the affected couple to significantly change responsibilities and routines, thus it can take people several years to regain equilibrium (Rognmo et al., 2013). Though some studies have indicated that divorce serves an important function that legally and emotionally free people to pursue better relationships, it has also been reported that it can lead to adverse emotional effects (Akter & Begum, 2012). For instance, recent studies have suggested a possible significant association between divorce and alcohol abuse as well as divorce and psychopathology (Sharma, 2011). In this regard, the researcher examines the potential impacts of divorce on the mental health and relationships of the affected couples and their families. This rest of this paper is divided into two sections i.e. analysis and discussion and conclusion. In the analysis and discussion section, the researcher provides the results of the findings. The contents of this section include an analysis of the relationship between divorce and mental wellness, relationship between divorce and mental health disorders and effect of divorce on adult and children relationships. Finally, the researcher provides a summary of the study and implications of the study.

The purpose of the first chapter is to examine the relationships between divorce, the single-mother family, the single-father family, and youth crime using a social disorganization framework and community-level data from 454 Canadian municipalities in 2001 and 2006. Chapter two provides a review of the disruptions in close relationships in children and adolescents with divorced parents. Chapter three reviews the more scant literature on naturally occurring coping efforts among children of divorce, including the importance of social support, help-seeking behaviours, and the continuum of active to more passive coping strategies originating from the cognitive-behavioural perspective. Chapter four compares perceptions of coparenting in divorced and married parents, both fathers and mothers, and assessing their relations to school-age and adolescent childrens psychosocial adjustment. Chapter five studies stepfamily transitions and common accompanying beliefs, and reports the findings of an empirical study which aimed to predict two aspects of remarital quality dyadic adjustment and relationship commitment via a measure of the changes in ones beliefs over time about remarriage and stepfamilies. Chapter six illuminates how specific children seek to connect and balance out the everyday life by being attentive to repeated routines as well as differences between their two households.
