Book excerpt: These lectures of Dr. Saphir were delivered in Kensington, at the close of 1889 and beginning of 1890. They are, in some respects, the most important of all his writings, as they give, in connected form, his matured views of the relation of the two great divisions of the Bible. No preacher or writer of our day had such a clear insight into the spirit and connection of the sacred writings. This was the great charm of his preaching, which made it so attractive to many earnest-minded Christians of all churches. - Preface.

They are, in some respects, the most important of all his writings, as they give, in con nected form, his matured views of the relation of the two great divisions of the Bible. No preacher or writer of our day had such a clear insight into the spirit and connection of the sacred writings. This was the great charm of his preaching, which made it so attractive to many earnest-minded Christians of all churches. It was full of instruc tion, because it brought out the deep meaning, quite apparent when indicated, - for his interpretations were not fanciful, but real, - of the symbols and prophecies of the Old Testament, as well as of the narratives and sayings of the New. The unity of teaching he most clearly proved, and strikingly illustrated. His identification of Jehovah with Jesus can scarcely be disputed, by any careful and prayerful student of Scripture. It is everywhere manifest, in the claims and teachings of Jesus Himself. His distinction between monotheism and Jehovahism is vital, and clears away much of the vague mistiness of modern speculation. Book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding

Download or read book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding written by Joseph K. Gordon and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In six closely-reasoned chapters, Joseph Gordon presents a detailed account of a Christian doctrine of Scripture in the fullest context of systematic theology. Divine Scripture in Human Understanding addresses the confusing plurality of contemporary approaches to Christian Scripture—both within and outside the academy—by articulating a traditionally grounded, constructive systematic theology of Christian Scripture. Utilizing primarily the methodological resources of Bernard Lonergan and traditional Christian doctrines of Scripture recovered by Henri de Lubac, it draws upon achievements in historical-critical study of Scripture, studies of the material history of Christian Scripture, reflection on philosophical hermeneutics and philosophical and theological anthropology, and other resources to articulate a unified but open horizon for understanding Christian Scripture today. Following an overview of the contemporary situation of Christian Scripture, Joseph Gordon identifies intellectual precedents for the work in the writings of Irenaeus, Origen, and Augustine, who all locate Scripture in the economic work of the God to whom it bears witness by interpreting it through the Rule of Faith. Subsequent chapters draw on Scripture itself; classical sources such as Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine, and Aquinas; the fruit of recent studies on the history of Scripture; and the work of recent scholars and theologians to provide a contemporary Christian articulation of the divine and human locations of Christian Scripture and the material history and intelligibility and purpose of Scripture in those locations. The resulting constructive position can serve as a heuristic for affirming the achievements of traditional, historical-critical, and contextual readings of Scripture and provides a basis for addressing issues relatively underemphasized by those respective approaches.

Book excerpt: The Bible wheel is a simple and direct geometric representation of the Holy Bible. It reveals the supernatural structure of the Christian Canon by displaying the intrinsic geometric integration of the sixty-six books amongst themselves and with the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The Bible wheel is composed of twenty-two spokes and three concentric wheels within the wheel called cycles. The sixty-six books of the Bible fit perfectly on this structure. Each cycle spans a consecutive set of twenty-two books: Genesis - Song of Solomon, Isaiah - Acts, Romans - Revelation. Each cycle retells the Gospel story in its own unique way from the beginning (Aleph) to the end (Tav). The three cycles were designed by God in accordance with the primary divisions of Scripture. - Publisher.

Book Old Earth Creationism on Trail

Download or read book Old Earth Creationism on Trail written by Tim Chaffey and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Twenty-somethings once faithfully attended church. What made them stop? While most said they still believe that the Bible is God's Word, they also said that the idea that the earth is millions of years old was one thing that caused them to doubt the bible? The crumbling foundation of the church takes a devastating toll on future generations. Therefore, churches must reclaim the historical truth found in Genesis and apply the Bible's authority to every area of life." -Ken Ham, President Answers in Genesis As the modern Church struggles to find a place of relevancy for a new generation that already has massive demands on its time and attention, more and more young people raised in the Church are leaving it - failing to find the answers to their questions of faith and life, beset with doubts raised by issues that the Church chooses not to address. Opting to skirt the controversy of Genesis as literal history, the biblical authority of the Holy Word is called into question and reduced to a collection of mere stories. More popularly considered an issue for schools or in the public realm, the conflicting views on the age of the earth also remain a pivotal issue within the Church - as it has for over two centuries. Was the Creation week literally six days? Does science really point to an old earth? Does the issue really matter for Christians? Should this issue even be discussed within the Church? Join authors Dr. Jason Lisle and Tim Chaffey as they put forth a case against an old-earth interpretation of Scripture. A comprehensive biblical, theological, and scientific critique of old-earth creationism, the book presents its compelling testimony in layman's terms to create a powerful debate that leads to unquestionable truth.

Book excerpt: With so many authors and an array of genres, you might expect the Bible to be an anthology of disconnected pieces. Yet, the sixty-six books from Genesis to Revelation weave together into a cohesive unit of divine instruction. But, the question remains - Is there more? Is there a comprehensive design in the Bible that surpasses the mere idea of conceptual unity? Stepping back to look more broadly at the arrangement of the sixty-six divinely inspired books of the Bible it is surprising to observe a mosaic image of a person with a head, torso, arms, and legs. The body of Jesus Christ (Incarnation) and the body of biblical truth (Inspiration) representing the two special revelations of God, were apparently constructed in the same manner. Taking the books of the Bible in their received groupings and order, being careful not to manipulate God's providential arrangement, we see a mirror image of the man Jesus Christ. It seems that the Bible presents to us the Person of our Lord, not only in its content, but also in its form. Crafted by God is the unveiling of this discovery and a probing of its implications. Here is a study that truly unlocks the harmonious structure and purposeful design of the Bible - as well as opening new vistas of thought that put all of Scripture into its contextual meaning.

Book excerpt: How does Scripture read Scripture, and can the church follow that lead? Scripture or tradition? The things of God or the things of men? It’s easy, especially in the long shadow of the Reformation, to pit Scripture against tradition as enemies. After all, the goal of orienting one’s faith to the Bible alone can be so alluring. But the Bible itself suggests there is a fundamental unity between Scripture and the tradition it embodies. Rightly appreciating this unity can set the stage for more faithful and robust engagement with Scripture. Today’s polarized world needs thoughtful Christians who can reasonably consider their faith in light of what the Bible actually says. Scripture First examines where tradition comes from and how you can avoid trivial proof texting. Discover how the Old and New Testament can serve as a living and active resource for Christian life, and how God continues to leads his people as they engage his Word.
