Book The Stranger the Tears the Photograph the Touch

Download or read book The Stranger the Tears the Photograph the Touch written by William A. Christian Jr. and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina García Rodero, are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hands are indeed remarkable tools. They are used for repairing cars, saving lives, and even that most simple but profound of functions: making others feel loved and cared for. For centuries, hands have been revered as vessels for imparting blessing, spiritual gifts, the Holy Spirit, and healing- through touching one another. Traditionally known as the laying on of hands, this Christian practice has been given by God for laypeople and clergymen alike to gain insight, heal the sick, receive spiritual gifts, and bless others on their journeys. One of the most beautiful and intimate things we can do is be active participants and partners with God by using touch to impart healing and blessings to the sick, oppressed, and those who hunger for more. When we use our God-given hands in conjunction with prayer to touch others, we are accomplishing God's will here on earth. The Power of Touch not only explores the history and substantiation of the efficacy and importance of hands throughout time, but taps into readers' very souls as it illustrates the power that to help and heal our fellow man-and, in turn, ourselves, through the power of God that flows through us.

Book The Innate Capacity

Download or read book The Innate Capacity written by Robert K. C. Forman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sequel to Robert Forman's well-received collection, The Problem of Pure Consciousness (Oxford, 1990). The essays in the earlier volume argued that some mystical experiences do not seem to be formed or shaped by the language system--a thesis that stands in sharp contradistinction to deconstruction in general and to the "constructivist" school of mysticism in particular, which holds that all mysticism is the product of a cultural and linguistic process. In The Innate Capacity, Forman and his colleagues put forward a hypothesis about the formative causes of these "pure consciousness" experiences. All of the contributors agree that mysticism is the result of an innate human capacity, rather than a learned, socially conditioned and constructive process. The innate capacity is understood in several different ways. Many perceive it as an expression of human consciousness per se, awareness itself. Some hold that consciousness should be understood as a built-in link to some hidden, transcendent aspect of the world, and that a mystical experience is the experience of that inherent connectedness. Another thesis that appears frequently is that mystics realize this innate capacity through a process of releasing the hold of the ego and the conceptual system. The contributors here look at mystical experience as it is manifested in a variety of religious and cultural settings, including Hindu Yoga, Buddhism, Sufism, and medieval Christianity. Taken together, the essays constitute an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the nature of human consciousness and mystical experience and its relation to the social and cultural contexts in which it appears.

Download or read book An Untold Story written by Robert C. Pelfrey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there more to life? Is there more to me? Is it all worth it? What does it mean to be one with God, and what does that have to do with the mess and challenges of everyday life? These are some of the issues addressed in An Untold Story as it follows the mystical-heroic quest to find our true selves. In coming to a better understanding of what it is to be a hero and what it is to be a mystic, we come to a better understanding of what it is to be ourselves. The stories are connected. The classic hero's journey of myth and legend is at the heart of the mystical journey to life with God. And together they show the way to our true selves and our true stories. With the guidance of mystical theologian John of Ruusbroec and other teachers, and with help from many favorite heroic stories and characters, An Untold Story presents a path of spiritual formation that is at once epic and everyday, fantastical and practical, otherworldly and ordinary. This is a guide for any would-be mystic-hero longing for their own wondertale to no longer be an untold story.

Book His Touch on the Mouths

    Book Details:
  • Author : Seock-Tae Sohn
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2018-11-19
  • ISBN : 1532655819
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book His Touch on the Mouths written by Seock-Tae Sohn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Pentecost there was no fire. The divided tongues like fire came down to each one of the disciples and they spoke different languages so that all the people there could understand what they said without translators. In the OT times, God appointed his prophets by touching their mouths and putting his word into their mouths so that they might declare it to his people. Therefore, a prophet was the spokesman of God, and is usually called “the mouth of the Lord.” Jesus, called the Word as well as God, came into this world as the great prophet for the ministry of the word. He taught the kingdom of God to his people and trained his disciples to be prophets after his departure. The risen Christ appointed his disciples to be prophets, giving them the ministerial task of the word and asking the Father to seal them as his prophets. Thus, the baptism of the Holy Spirit was the installation ceremony for the disciples to be the new covenant prophets, as it was for the prophets of OT times. The disciples were to go out to the ends of the earth to proclaim his word. Those baptized by water are simultaneously baptized by the Holy Spirit and are given the office of the new covenant prophet.

Book Incarnation Pain Theology

Download or read book Incarnation Pain Theology written by Espen Dahl and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the phenomenology of pain allows us to rethink human incarnation While the phenomenological tradition has carefully treated both the objective and the lived body, Espen Dahl explores a dimension of the body that does not fall neatly into either category, suggesting that philosophers should take account of the inner density of our organic, material body. By integrating the dimension of “flesh-and-blood” into the phenomenological notion of the body, Dahl argues that it is possible to reach a more adequate notion of human incarnation. The author explores the body in its subjectivity and its resistance, in activity founded on passivity, and in the ambiguous limits of its skin. The phenomenon of pain is given particular attention in this investigation, since pain is, as Dahl argues, what makes the body inescapably manifest in its otherwise hidden dimensions, including its ambiguity and vulnerability. Related to this focus, Dahl also engages with the Christian theological concerns of incarnation, pain, and hope. Phenomenologists have long drawn on this religious inheritance, particularly in what has been dubbed the French “theological turn.” In a similar manner, Incarnation, Pain, Theology: A Phenomenology of the Body draws on these theological sources while firmly holding to its philosophical commitments in methodological approach and analytic aims.

Book A Touch of Doubt

  • ISBN : 3110624338
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book A Touch of Doubt written by Rachel Aumiller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we know about ourselves and the world through the sense of touch and what are the epistemic limits of touch? Scepticism claims that there is always something that slips through the epistemologist’s grasp. A Touch of Doubt explores the significance of touch for the history of philosophical scepticism as well as for scepticism as an embodied form of subversive political, religious, and artistic practice. Drawing on the tradition of scepticism within nineteenth- and twentieth-century continental philosophy and psychoanalysis, this volume discusses how the sense of touch uncovers contradictions within our knowledge of ourselves and the world. It questions 1) what we can know through touch, 2) what we can know about touch itself, and 3) how our experience of touching the other and ourselves throws us into a state of doubt. This volume is intended for students and scholars who wish to reconsider the experience of touching in intersections of philosophy, religion, art, and social and political practice.
