Book excerpt: American evangelicalism has long walked hand in hand with modern consumer capitalism. Timothy Gloege shows us why, through an engaging story about God and big business at the Moody Bible Institute. Founded in Chicago by shoe-salesman-turned-revivalist Dwight Lyman Moody in 1889, the institute became a center of fundamentalism under the guidance of the innovative promoter and president of Quaker Oats, Henry Crowell. Gloege explores the framework for understanding humanity shared by these business and evangelical leaders, whose perspectives clearly differed from those underlying modern scientific theories. At the core of their "corporate evangelical" framework was a modern individualism understood primarily in terms of economic relations. Conservative evangelicalism and modern business grew symbiotically, transforming the ways that Americans worshipped, worked, and consumed. Gilded Age evangelicals initially understood themselves primarily as new "Christian workers--employees of God guided by their divine contract, the Bible. But when these ideas were put to revolutionary ends by Populists, corporate evangelicals reimagined themselves as savvy religious consumers and reformulated their beliefs. Their consumer-oriented "orthodoxy" displaced traditional creeds and undermined denominational authority, forever altering the American religious landscape. Guaranteed pure of both liberal theology and Populist excesses, this was a new form of old-time religion not simply compatible with modern consumer capitalism but uniquely dependent on it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nuanced narrative about the intersections of religious and economic life in early Christianity The divine was an active participant in the economic spheres of the ancient Mediterranean world. Evidence demonstrates that gods and goddesses were represented as owning goods, holding accounts, and producing wealth through the mediation of religious and civic officials. This book argues that early Christ-followers also used financial language to articulate and imagine their relationship to the divine. Theo-economics--intertwined theological and economic logics in which divine and human beings regularly transact with one another--permeate the letters of Paul and other texts connected with Pauline communities. Unlike other studies, which treat the ancient economy and religion separately, Divine Accounting takes seriously the overlapping of themes such as poverty, labor, social status, suffering, cosmology, and eschatology in material evidence from the ancient Mediterranean and early Christian texts.

Book excerpt: How to Integrate the Many Names of God into Prayer Immerse yourself in the profound exploration of the divine identities in "Divine Dialogue: Integrating the Many Names of God into Prayer." This comprehensive study serves as a spiritual guide, offering an enriching journey that delves deep into the heart of Biblical text to discover and unravel the significance of the myriad names of God, emphasizing their application in personal prayer life. At the outset, the book invites you on a sacred pilgrimage, tracing the footsteps of the biblical patriarchs and understanding the significance of their encounters with God. We start with the supreme creator, God himself, recognized by various names - God, Jehovah, Elohim, and Most High. This section takes us back to the creation's roots, bringing to light the profound implications of these names that represent God's omnipotence and supreme authority. We then traverse the covenantal journey, reflecting on God's promises, captured in the names El Shaddai, Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Rapha, and Jehovah Nissi, among others. These are more than just names; they serve as powerful reminders of God's enduring commitment and steadfast love toward humanity. From the God of covenants, we move towards God's attributes, reflecting His comforting, hopeful, loving, and peaceful nature. These names embody the many facets of God's character and His relational aspect, acting as a beacon of hope and solace in our everyday lives. Next, we delve into the awe-inspiring mystery of the Incarnation through the names of Jesus Christ. Immanuel, Christ, Son of Man, Son of God — these names emphasize the divine condescension and the bridge between the divine and human nature. The discussion enhances our understanding of Christ’s mission and His role as our mediator and savior. We also explore the majestic titles of Jesus that emphasize his universal reign and his peace-bringing role—King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace, and the Alpha and Omega. We then transition to understanding Christ's redemptive work through names such as the Lamb of God, the Way, the Truth, the Life, the Vine, and the Good Shepherd. Delving deeper, we study Christ's divine authority through names that underline His headship over the church and His preeminence over creation. These names emphasize the authority and sovereignty of Christ, reassuring us of His victorious reign. As we move into the realm of the Holy Spirit, the book unveils the multitude of names that represent His divine work and influence in our lives. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of Truth, and many more—each name inviting us to experience the transformative and sanctifying power of the Spirit. The narrative continues to unpack the guiding and comforting roles of the Holy Spirit, reflected through names such as the Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, and Helper. These names encourage us to lean on the Spirit for guidance, strength, and comfort. We then venture into the vivifying aspect of the Spirit, exploring names that speak of life and glory. The Eternal Spirit, Power of the Highest, Spirit of Life, and Spirit of Glory — these names inspire us to live a Spirit-led life that reflects God's glory. The exploration of the Spirit culminates with an examination of the Sealing Spirit, represented by names like the Seal, Deposit/Guarantee, Spirit of Grace and Supplication, and Fire. These names underscore the Spirit's role in assuring, empowering, and sanctifying believers. The book concludes with an enriching study of the various names emphasizing God's special relationship with Israel, His righteous judgment, His peace and rest, His strength and refuge, His light and truth, and His deliverance and salvation.

Download or read book Divine Power and Evil written by Kenneth K. Pak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil perplexes us all and threatens to undermine the meaningfulness of our existence. How can we reconcile the reality of evil with the notion of a God who is perfectly good and powerful? Process theodicy, whose foremost proponent is David Griffin, suggests one answer: because every being possesses its own power of self-determination in order for God to attain the divine aim of higher goodness for the world, God must take the risk of the possibility of evil. Divine Power and Evil responds to Griffin's criticisms against traditional theodicy, assesses the merits of process theodicy, and points out ways in which traditional theism could incorporate a number of Griffin's valuable insights in progressing toward a philosophically and theologically satisfactory theodicy. It provides a new and important contribution to a long-standing debate within philosophy of religion and theology.

Book Divine Discontent

Download or read book Divine Discontent written by Jonathon S. Kahn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. E. B. Du Bois is an improbable candidate for a project in religion. His skepticism of and, even, hostility toward religion is readily established and canonically accepted. Indeed, he spent his career rejecting normative religious commitments to institutions and supernatural beliefs. In this book, Jonathon Kahn offers a fresh and controversial reading of Du Bois that seeks to overturn this view. Kahn contends that the standard treatment of Du Bois turns a deaf ear to his writings. For if we're open to their religious timbre, those writings-from his epoch-making The Souls of Black Folk to his unstudied series of parables that depict the lynching of an African American Christ-reveal a virtual obsession with religion. Du Bois's moral, literary, and political imagination is inhabited by religious rhetoric, concepts and stories. Divine Discontent recovers and introduces readers to the remarkably complex and varied religious world in Du Bois's writings. It's a world of sermons, of religious virtues such as sacrifice and piety, of jeremiads that fight for a black American nation within the larger nation. Unlike other African American religious voices at the time, however, Du Bois's religious orientation is distinctly heterodox--it exists outside the bounds of institutional Christianity. Kahn shows how Du Bois self-consciously marshals religious rhetoric, concepts, typologies, narratives, virtues, and moods in order to challenge traditional Christian worldview in which events function to confirm a divine order. Du Bois's antimetaphysical religious voice, he argues, places him firmly in the American tradition of pragmatic religious naturalism typified by William James. This innovative reading of Du Bois should appeal to scholars of American religion, intellectual history, African American Studies, and philosophy of religion.
