Download or read book Rethinking Gnosticism written by Michael Allen Williams and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most anyone interested in such topics as creation mythology, Jungian theory, or the idea of "secret teachings" in ancient Judaism and Christianity has found "gnosticism" compelling. Yet the term "gnosticism," which often connotes a single rebellious movement against the prevailing religions of late antiquity, gives the false impression of a monolithic religious phenomenon. Here Michael Williams challenges the validity of the widely invoked category of ancient "gnosticism" and the ways it has been described. Presenting such famous writings and movements as the Apocryphon of John and Valentinian Christianity, Williams uncovers the similarities and differences among some major traditions widely categorized as gnostic. He provides an eloquent, systematic argument for a more accurate way to discuss these interpretive approaches. The modern construct "gnosticism" is not justified by any ancient self-definition, and many of the most commonly cited religious features that supposedly define gnosticism phenomenologically turn out to be questionable. Exploring the sample sets of "gnostic" teachings, Williams refutes generalizations concerning asceticism and libertinism, attitudes toward the body and the created world, and alleged features of protest, parasitism, and elitism. He sketches a fresh model for understanding ancient innovations on more "mainstream" Judaism and Christianity, a model that is informed by modern research on dynamics in new religious movements and is freed from the false stereotypes from which the category "gnosticism" has been constructed.

Book The Commands of the Apostles

Download or read book The Commands of the Apostles written by Michael Phillips and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Commands of Jesus presents a companion volume exploring 120 commands from the New Testament’s epistles and apostolic writings. Most studies of the epistles of the New Testament emphasize theology. In The Commands of the Apostles, noted devotional author Michael Phillips instead puts the focus of the practical commands of the Apostolic writers—and how we might follow them in our daily lives. Considering the important command found in Hebrews 6 1 2—“Let us go on to maturity”—Phillips suggests that spiritual maturity requires nothing more or less that attaining Christlikeness through obedience to commands. He therefore asks readers to put elementary doctrines aside and focus instead on the commands we as Christians are called upon to obey.

Book excerpt: In this fourth title in the series of contemporary Catholic classics, William K. McDonough offers a popular explanation of the meaning of the Trinity, ?the fundamental doctrine of the Catholic faith, ? and its relation to the body of Christian revelation. He presents a synthesis of the Catholic faith: the triune life of God; the Person of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; creation; the Incarnation; mariology; divine adoption; divine indwelling; prayer, sacraments and sacramentals; love; life with God here and hereafter. McDonough relies on the theology of Saints John and Paul, the teachings of the Fathers of the church, and the spiritual writings of Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity, a contemporary of Saint Th'r'se of Lisieux. He sees the mystery of the Trinity as a secret'the Secret of Secrets'beyond all our guessing'that, once revealed to us, becomes the pattern for true Christian living.

Book excerpt: The story of Adam, Eve, "God" and "the Serpent" in the Garden of Eden is the true story of the miserable life we live as human beings on this earth. But our understanding of the fateful events in Eden had been solidly formed by the falsified mind-bending "Bible stories" we were told as children by parents and church ministers. And even as adults, organized religion still tells us the same illogical fables and somehow most of us have continued to reason and understand these crucial events that totally control our lives as children, despite the fact that they do not agree with common sense. So, "What is the Truth?" Jesus Christ came specifically to bear witness to the truth; Yahweh the god of Eden had him killed through his religious agents, who continue to muffle the truth and to mislead humanity. But The Final Testaments offers the true definition of the events in Eden. The Fall of the Human Souls; the Actual Original Sin; the Actual Genesis of this World; the Diabolic Nature of Yahweh the God of Eden; the Actual Antichrist or the Expected "Immanuel"; Who really Killed Jesus Christ-all these and more are authoritatively revealed.
