When private investigator Nikki Glass became immortal as a descendant of Artemis, she never dreamed she’d find herself playing marriage counselor to the gods. But she doesn’t really have much of a choice when the crazed ex-wife of Anderson Kane—a god in disguise who just happens to be the son of a Fury—decides to enact revenge by wiping out all of humanity. Somehow, Nikki must convince the two to kiss and make up, but with Anderson now gone AWOL, she'll have to find him first. To top it all off, the cat’s out of the bag that Anderson killed Konstantin, the Olympians’ deposed leader. Now their new boss—Konstantin’s son—is out for blood. With every mere mortal’s fate now resting in Nikki’s hands, can she outsmart the gods…or will she be doomed to spend the rest of eternity in a barren and desolate world?

But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So how do I know what I am supposed to do with my life? I hear from my pastor and the things I read that God calls people to be pastors and missionaries. Some people even talk about being called to be a doctor or a teacher. I think I remember my mom saying she felt called to be a mom. But what am I supposed to do with my life? Has God actually called me to be a high school science teacher? Should I be looking for something else? How will I know if and when he does call me or is that just for people going into ministry, after all? Not Called draws on church history, the evolution of Western societal norms, and biblical revelation to answer these and other related questions in an effort to determine if calling, as it is understood today, retains the meaning it was intended to carry from the beginning. In addition to a biblical and historical assessment of the evolution of the concept, Not Called raises both cultural and practical challenges to the contemporary meaning and use of the concept which all but excludes Christians from a non-Western, first-world cultural context.

Book Paternity Progeny and Perpetuation

Download or read book Paternity Progeny and Perpetuation written by Steffan Mathias and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh perspective on the importance of progeny and perpetuation of the family line in the Hebrew tradition. Steffan Matthias argues that the Hebrew bible depicts failing to protect the transmission of the family line as both a failure in the social order, a threat to the afterlife, and a failure in masculinity, leading to the eradication of the name and memory of the man and the destruction of the household. Using the work of Pierre Bourdieu, as well as anthropological and gender-critical insights, Matthias reassess pertinent texts which respond to the threat of men dying without children, such as levirate marriage (Deut 22:5-10) or the erection of monuments (Isa 56:5-8). Themes such as death, burial and memorial, identity, covenant, name, genealogy, property, seed and sexuality, rather than being treated as separate parts of social or family life, are critically assessed in light of each other. Matthias instead illustrates how they form part of the same discourse of social reproduction, in which the integrity of the family is protected and passed down from father to son in generations of descendants. Paternity, Progeny, and Perpetuation raises profound questions regarding the subtle ways texts that respond to this threat of social annihilation – the destruction of the father and his line - reinforce social boundaries and construct men as transmitters of identity and women as submissive counterparts.

Book Anti Foreignism and Western Learning in Early Modern Japan

Download or read book Anti Foreignism and Western Learning in Early Modern Japan written by Bob Tadashi Wakabayashi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study analyzes New Theses (Shinron) by Aizawa Seishisai (1781–1863) and its contribution to Japanese political thought and policy during the early–modern era. New Theses is found to be indispensable to our understanding of Japan’s transformation from a feudal to a modern state. Focusing on Aizawa, Bob Wakabayashi traces the development of xenophobia during the Tokugawa period and examines the basis of anti-Western sentiment. He shows how knowledge of Christianity inspired Aizawa to develop the potent concept of kokutai (“what is essential to a nation”). His analysis explains why the Edobakufu’s policies of national isolation (sakoku) and armed expulsion of Westerners (jōi) gained widespread support in the late Tokugawa. Wakabayashi also describes how information on Western affairs and world conditions decisively altered Tokugawa Confucian conceptions of civilization and barbarism, and how this in turn enabled the Japanese to redefine their nation’s relationship to China and the West. Rather than place Aizawa and his New Theses of 1825 at the beginning of a process leading up to the Meiji Restoration, Wakabayashi discusses New Theses in conjunction with the bakufu’s Expulsion Edict issued in the same year. He concludes that the convergence of the two events in 1825 marks the emergence of modern nationalism in Japan, and therefore should perhaps be seen as more epoch–making than the 1868 Restoration itself. The study also presents a complete translation of New Theses."
