Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is more dangerous to be misunderstood than the question, "What is the human being?" In an era when this question is not only being misunderstood but even forgotten, wisdom delivered by the great thinkers and mystics of the past must be recovered. Edith Stein (1891-1942), a Jewish Carmelite mystical philosopher, offers great promise to resume asking the question of the human being. In Human and Divine Being, Donald Wallenfang offers a comprehensive summary of the theological anthropology of this heroic martyr to truth. Beginning with the theme of human vocation, Wallenfang leads the reader through a labyrinth of philosophical and theological vignettes: spiritual being, the human soul, material being, empathy, the logic of the cross, and the meaning of suffering. The question of the human being is asked in light of divine being by harnessing the fertile tension between the methods of phenomenology and metaphysics. Stein spurs us on to a rendezvous with the stream of "perennial philosophy" that has watered the landscape of thought since conscious time began. In the end, the meaning of human being is thrown into sharp relief against the darkness of all that is not authentically human.

Book excerpt: The complex nature of Christian communion with a personal God requires a nuanced expression. Since its inception, the early church affirmed God’s unknowable nature and also participation in God through Christ. The church fathers employed the language of theosis in talking about union with God and human transformation in the likeness of God. However, the term theosis or deification is a broad category and requires precise explanation to avoid human dissolution into the divine in the mystical union it attempts to describe. In Triadosis, Eduard Borysov offers a new approach to the conundrum of the imparticipable divine nature and the prospect of personal union between human and the Trinity. Most significantly, he proposes that if God is Trinity, then we are created and restored in the image of the same tri-personal God.

Book Divine Games

  • Author : Steven J. Brams
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2018-09-18
  • ISBN : 0262347806
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Divine Games written by Steven J. Brams and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A game-theoretical analysis of interactions between a human being and an omnipotent and omniscient godlike being highlights the inherent unknowability of the latter's superiority. In Divine Games, Steven Brams analyzes games that a human being might play with an omnipotent and omniscient godlike being. Drawing on game theory and his own theory of moves, Brams combines the analysis of thorny theological questions, suggested by Pascal's wager (which considers the rewards and penalties associated with belief or nonbelief in God) and Newcomb's problem (in which a godlike being has near omniscience) with the analysis of several stories from the Hebrew Bible. Almost all of these stories involve conflict between God or a surrogate and a human player; their representation as games raises fundamental questions about God's superiority. In some games God appears vulnerable (after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit in defiance of His command), in other games his actions seem morally dubious (when He subjects Abraham and Job to extreme tests of their faith), and in still other games He has a propensity to hold grudges (in preventing Moses from entering the Promised Land and in undermining the kingship of Saul). If the behavior of a superior being is indistinguishable from that of an ordinary human being, his existence would appear undecidable, or inherently unknowable. Consequently, Brams argues that keeping an open mind about the existence of a superior being is an appropriate theological stance.

Book The Way of Anthroposophy

  • Publisher : Rudolf Steiner Press

Download or read book The Way of Anthroposophy written by Stewart Copinger Easton and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the end of the century approaches, the eternal problems of life confronting mankind, particularly in the western world, appear to be as incapable of solution as they have always been. Further problems have emerged as a result of the failure of the products of science and technology to bring about a more contented society, as envisaged not so long ago in some circles. More than ever before, thinking men and women feel the need to seek for answers to the meaning and purpose of life. In his opening chapter, Dr. Easton considers not only the age-old questions that have always been asked, but also those especially significant for our times. As he states, this is not a textbook of anthroposophy (the spiritual science formulated by the Austrian philosopher, Rudolf Steiner, 1861-1925), but he presents anthroposophical ideas, including those of reincarnation and karma, with great clarity, and compellingly suggests to the reader their relevance and application to the problems of modern life. This book will, without doubt, be of great help to the growing number of people concerned about the disturbing trends in life today, who really feel the need to seek for a solution, and who are, as the author says, 'looking for something that goes beyond the traditional religious teachings, and who do not think modern science has all the answers'." -- Back cover.

Book Divinity

  • Author : Ev. Paul Mukendi
  • Publisher : Partridge Publishing Singapore

Download or read book Divinity written by Ev. Paul Mukendi and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No book has ever attempted to deal with the subject of divinity in its entirety. Here at long last is a comprehensive book dealing with divine beings in its complexity. It provides the reader with accurate and insightful knowledge concerning the concept of divinity. The author gives a clear explanation of the Triune nature of God. God is one being, manifest and existing in three distinct identities or persons, which is further discussed as being comparable with the makeup of a human being. God shares his divine nature with spiritual beings in the heavens with angels and on earth with humankind. The divine nature of God resides in all spirits. Therefore, men have Gods nature in their spirits; they can communicate with and receive the things of the spiritual realm. Through sin, humanity has lost the nature of God; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The purpose of the Bible is to spiritualize humankind, because we have fallen short of the glory of God. The broad focus of this book is to bring as many believers to a stage of maturity in the knowledge of Christ.

Book Hidden In Plain Sight A Study of the Revelation to John

Download or read book Hidden In Plain Sight A Study of the Revelation to John written by Uchenna Mezue and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelation to John has been with us for about 2000 years and has been the subject of diverse attempts at interpretation. The Revelation as given is a vision of the end time work of the Son of Man and the sole purpose is to prepare humanity for that mission and offer them the chance to recognise the last Envoy of God when He does come. It is only with this understanding in view that the Revelation can be appreciated. All the promised messages for the end-time are now available to us and I believe we are in a better position to understand the message of The Revelation. Indeed, I believe that we urgently need to understand its message. The urge and pressure amongst all striving human spirits to unravel the mysteries of The Revelation represents this need. This study is not a substitute for The Revelation, but may be regarded as a call for a deeper study and hopefully an awakening to the need to experience the times in a more alert manner. The work is offered in the recognition that the Revelation is being fulfilled in this epoch and as such is a must read for all striving human spirits

Book Kant s Deontological Eudaemonism

Download or read book Kant s Deontological Eudaemonism written by Jeanine M. Grenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Professor Jeanine Grenberg defends the idea that Kant's virtue theory is best understood as a system of eudaemonism, indeed, as a distinctive form of eudaemonism that makes it preferable to other forms of it: a system of what she calls Deontological Eudaemonism. In Deontological Eudaemonism, one achieves happiness both rationally conceived (as non-felt pleasure in the virtually unimpeded harmonious activity of one's will and choice) and empirically conceived (as pleasurable fulfilment of one's desires) only via authentic commitment to and fulfilment of what is demanded of all rational beings: making persons as such one's end in all things. To tell this story of Deontological Eudaemonism, Grenberg first defends the notion that Kant's deontological approach to ethics is simultaneously (and indeed, foundationally, and most basically) teleological. She then shows that the realization of an aptitude for the virtuous fulfilment of one's obligatory ends provides the solid basis for simultaneous realization of happiness, both rationally and empirically conceived. Along the way, she argues both that Kant's notion of happiness rationally conceived is essentially identical to Aristotle's conception of happiness as unimpeded activity, and that his notion of happiness empirically conceived is best realized via an unwavering commitment to the fulfilment of one's obligatory ends.
