Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history of early global literature that treats translators as active agents mediating cultures. In this book, Zrinka Stahuljak challenges scholars in both medieval and translation studies to rethink how ideas and texts circulated in the medieval world. Whereas many view translators as mere conduits of authorial intention, Stahuljak proposes a new perspective rooted in a term from journalism: the fixer. With this language, Stahuljak captures the diverse, active roles medieval translators and interpreters played as mediators of entire cultures—insider informants, local guides, knowledge brokers, art distributors, and political players. Fixers offers nothing less than a new history of literature, art, translation, and social exchange from the perspective not of the author or state but of the fixer.

Download or read book Exodus written by Waldemar Janzen and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To whom does primary allegiance belong? To great human empires, or to the God whose elusive presence we can never fully grasp? Waldemar Janzen offers a fresh approach to the book of Exodus. The liberation from Egypt is a prelude to Israel’s unique calling to model before the nations a new life of service under God. Exodus portrays how God, through his servant Moses, wages a dramatic battle with Egypt’s mighty ruler for the release of enslaved Israel. The watching Israel wavers: “Is the Lord among us or not?” Even after Israel covenants to be God’s priestly kingdom and holy nation, Israel worships a golden calf. Once more God’s grace wrests Israel away, this time from slavery to doubts, fears, and self-centeredness. The people then focus faith on the imageless presence of God in their midst. God still wrestles for his people today.

Book Divine Correction for Distraction Volume 1

Download or read book Divine Correction for Distraction Volume 1 written by Given O. Blakely and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is volume one of the book "Divine Correction for Distraction." Owing to the fact that this is a commentary on the book of Colossians, we recommend the books (volumes one and two) be purchased as a set. For the Christian, this is the day of distraction. Many voices are calling out for our allegiance. For those en route to heaven, this circumstance is most dangerous, for dwelling in the house of the Lord requires a singular and consistent focus. This book is an exposition of the remedial effects of proper focus. It is a commentary on the Biblical book of Colossians. The particular church to whom this letter is directed was experiencing distracting influences. The spiritual rationale of maintaining a proper focus is declared with great power. It is also an expose of the erroneous "how-to" approach to "the Christian life" that is being hawked by religious opportunists. For the believer, a completeness is found in Christ that cannot be augmented. There is no such thing as something that assists in the improvement of spiritual life that is not directly related to Christ, being revealed in the Scriptutres -- particularly by means of apostolic doctrine. This book is dedicated by my dear wife, June Ellen. As of 2009, we have been married for twenty-nine pleasant and profitable years. After I was widowed in 1979, I doubted that I would ever enjoy the benefits of marriage again. This was compounded by the loneliness that attends being widowed after twenty-five years. I asked the Lord for mercy to live above my own circumstances, never realizing how marvelously He would answer my prayer. Through His loving providence, He crossed my path with a fine Christian lady, and we soon were married. Sister June is an excellent wife and mother, bearing four children to us: Adah Lael, Jonathan David and Benjamin Seth (twins), and Eva Christine. From 1993 through their graduation from high school, she homeschooled them in a most excellent way. While they were young, she also fulfilled the role of a nurse, as one of our twin sons, Benjamin, had brain cancer. At the age of nine, a massive tumor (4" x 5") was removed from the front left lobe of his brain. At that time, there was no medical guarantee of his continuance in the body. June was trained to care for him, and she nursed him through a very critical period, administering medication, taking blood samples, and a host of other things associated with the kind of care Benjamin required. Today, 2009, he is a fine young man and is cancer free. From the practical point of view, this is largely owing to the faithful care of his mother. In addition to the key role she plays in our home, Sister June is also an excellent minister of the Word of God. She teaches frequently in our various assemblies and is an indispensable companion in the good fight of faith as we journey together to the glory. She has an extraordinary grasp of the truth and has been gifted by the Lord to effectively communicate what she has been given to comprehend. She is also the proofreader of most of my writing and is a most profitable minister to my own spirit. Because of my love and respect for her, owing to her indispensable contribution to my own faith, and in gratefulness to our great God, I dedicate this volume to her.

Book Weathering the Psalms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steve A. Wiggins
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2014-12-03
  • ISBN : 1625647778

Download or read book Weathering the Psalms written by Steve A. Wiggins and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weather is all around us all the time. From ancient times people have attributed the weather to the work of the gods. Ancient Israel shared this perception. The book of Psalms reflects theologically significant views on the weather that have not, until now, been fully explored. In this meteorological survey of the Psalms, whimsically called "meteorotheology," every reference to the weather is translated in accordance with the known climate and weather of ancient Israel. Each verse is discussed with particular attention to the function of the weather in the hymnal of ancient Israel. This book will be a resource for translators, clergy, and scholars with an interest in how the weather impacted religious outlooks in ancient Israel. Readers will learn that some expected associations, such as thunder and lightning, did not influence Israelite views on the natural world in the same way that they do today. Yahweh was God of the weather, and the Psalms frequently use this paradigm as a reason for both praise and fear of the Lord.

Book The Trojan War as Military History

Download or read book The Trojan War as Military History written by Manousos E. Kambouris and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Trojan War as Military History, the author's starting point is the fact that the Iliad, notwithstanding the fantastical/mythological elements (the involvement of gods and demigods), is the earliest detailed description of warfare we have. Stripping away the myths, Manousos Kambouris analyses the epic and combines it with other textual and archaeological evidence to produce a coherent narrative of the conflict and of Bronze Age warfare in the Aegean. The author presents the most detailed analysis possible of Mycenaean Greek armies - their composition and organization, the warriors' weapons, armor and tactics, and those of their enemies. He finds sophisticated combined-arms forces blending massed infantry with missile troops and chariots, employing open battle, deception and special operations in what amounted to total war. The author's detailed examination of the mechanics of Bronze Age combat is enriched by his use of insights from experimental archaeology using replica equipment. No less illuminating or significant than the minutiae of heroic duels is the setting of the strategic context of the conflict and the geopolitical relationship of the Mycenaean Greeks with their rivals across the Aegean. Seeking to integrate the supernatural/divine element of the Iliad within the power structure and struggle of the day, the author lashes the Trojan War to the chariot of rationality and drags it from the mists of mythology and into the realm of History.

Download or read book Creation and Destruction written by David Toshio Tsumura and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, David Tsumura published a monograph entitled The Earth and the Waters in Genesis 1 and 2: A Linguistic Evaluation, in which he demonstrated that the oft-recited claim that the early chapters of Genesis betrayed a background or adaptation by Israel of mythological terms and/or motifs from other ancient Near Eastern literature could not be supported by a close examination of the linguistic data. Despite the book's positive reception, the notion that the Chaoskampf motif lies behind the early chapters of Genesis continues to be rehearsed in the literature as if the data were incontrovertible. In this revised and expanded edition of the 1989 book, Tsumura carries the discussion forward. In part 1, the general thesis of the original work is restated in a significantly revised and expanded form; in the second part of this monograph, he expands the scope of his research to include a number of poetic texts outside the Primeval History, texts for which scholars often have posited an ancient Near Eastern mythological substratum. Among the questions asked are the following: What are the functions of "waters" and "flood" in biblical poetry? Do the so-called chaos dragons in the Old Testament, such as Leviathan, Rahab, and Yam, have anything to do with the creation motif in the biblical tradition? What is the relationship between these poetic texts and the Ugaritic myths of the Baal-Yam conflict? Are Psalms 18 and 29 "adaptations" of Canaanite hymns, as suggested by some scholars? Among the conclusions that Tsumura reaches are these: (1) The phrase tohû wabohû has nothing to do with the idea of a chaotic state of the earth. (2) The term tehà ́m in Gen 1:2 is a Hebrew form derived from the Proto-Semitic *tiham-, "ocean," and it usually refers to the underground water that was overflowing and covering the entire surface of the earth in the initial state of creation. (3) The earth-water relationship in Gen 2:5-6 is different from that in Gen 1:2. In Gen 1:2, the earth was totally under the water; in Gen 2:5-6, only a part of the earth, the land, was watered by the 'ed-water, which was overflowing from an underground source. (4) The biblical poetic texts that are claimed to have been influenced by the Chaoskampf-motif of the ancient Near East in fact use the language of storms and floods metaphorically and have nothing to do with primordial combat.
