Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided Solids Transport, part of the Industrial Equipment for Chemical Engineering set, discusses the transport of a divided solid between workshops in a factory, and from a factory to the external market. Numerical examples are given for almost all the devices involved, and the pneumatic and hydraulic transportation parameters are also calculated. This book includes discussions on the movement of a divided solid by a liquid or gaseous stream, the energy consumption for a given flow, and how transporters are affected by the density and flow behavior of the divided solid being handled. The author also provides methods needed for understanding the equipment used in applied thermodynamics in the hope of encouraging students and engineers to self build the programs they need. Chapters are complemented with appendices that provide additional information and associated references. Download or read book Transport in Plants II written by U. Lüttge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As plant physiology increased steadily in the latter half of the 19th century, problems of absorption and transport of water and of mineral nutrients and problems of the passage of metabolites from one cell to another were investigated, especially in Germany. JUSTUS VON LIEBIG, who was born in Darmstadt in 1803, founded agricultural chemistry and developed the techniques of mineral nutrition in agricul ture during the 70 years of his life. The discovery of plasmolysis by NAGEL! (1851), the investigation of permeability problems of artificial membranes by TRAUBE (1867) and the classical work on osmosis by PFEFFER (1877) laid the foundations for our understanding of soluble substances and osmosis in cell growth and cell mechanisms. Since living membranes were responsible for controlling both water movement and the substances in solution, "permeability" became a major topic for investigation and speculation. The problems then discussed under that heading included passive permeation by diffusion, Donnan equilibrium adjustments, active transport processes and antagonism between ions. In that era, when organelle isolation by differential centrifugation was unknown and the electron microscope had not been invented, the number of cell membranes, their thickness and their composition, were matters for conjecture. The nature of cell surface membranes was deduced with remarkable accuracy from the reactions of cells to substances in solution. In 1895, OVERTON, in U. S. A. , published the hypothesis that membranes were probably lipid in nature because of the greater penetration by substances with higher fat solubility.

Book Advances in Solid Liquid Flow in Pipes and Its Application

Download or read book Advances in Solid Liquid Flow in Pipes and Its Application written by Iraj Zandi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Solid-Liquid Flow in Pipes and its Application focuses on solid-liquid interactions. The selection first takes a look at hydraulic transport of bulky materials and role of lift in the radial migration of particles in a pipe flow. Topics include the technological and economical considerations of transporting materials; lift model and the equations of motion; coefficients of lift and drag; and calculated behavior of particles in a pipe flow. The book then discusses particle and fluid velocities of turbulent flows of suspensions of neutrally buoyant particles; phase-separation phenomena in iso-density, two-phase flows; and transient flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipes. The text discusses pipeline transportation of coke in petroleum products, including slurry components, hydraulic tests, and hydraulic characteristics of slurry. The book then evaluates the use of heavy media in the pipeline transport of particulate solids. Comparison of pressure gradients and equipment and experimental procedures are highlighted. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in solid-liquid interactions.

Book Chemistry and Microstructure of Solidified Waste Forms

Download or read book Chemistry and Microstructure of Solidified Waste Forms written by Roger D. Spence and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-12-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and Microstructure of Solidified Waste Forms presents a comprehensive summary of mechanisms of immobilization in cementitious waste forms and the effect of waste species on cement chemistry and morphology. The book introduces the well-known chemistry and microstructure of cement pastes, in addition to common mechanisms of immobilization of waste species in cementitious waste forms. The fundamental chemical and microstructural fate of waste species is reviewed, and a technique for studying cementitious waste forms using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is described with examples of its application. Chemistry and Microstructure of Solidified Waste Forms also presents evidence to prove that chromium in waste becomes part of the cement matrix, and the potentially harmful effect of this process is discussed. Data for interpretations are included so that other researchers can analyze the data and draw their own conclusions. The book also discusses how solubility and solubility theory can be combined with leach theory and diffusion theory to predict the leaching performance of cementitious waste forms. Chemistry and Microstructure of Solidified Waste Forms will prove invaluable to hazardous waste professionals, engineers, environmental engineers, chemical engineers, waste disposal managers, waste form developers and researchers, and regulators.
