Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the wake of concern about the diversity of candidates selected by the U.S. military service academies, House Report 110-279 requested that the Secretary of Defense conduct a comprehensive assessment of the recruiting efforts, admissions policies, graduation rates, and career success rates at the service academies. The military services provided data and accompanyiṅg materials pursuant to a request from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. The RAND Corporation was asked to provide assistance in responding to the Congressional mandate by summarizing trends in accession and various outcomes of interest for the entry cohorts as a whole and for subgroups of interest. The study was a short-term effort and limited in scope to descriptive analyses. This monograph should be of interest to personnel and military planners working to improve the diversity of the military services, particularly the officer force"--P. iii

Book Sense of Belonging and Racial Diversity at the U S Service Academies

Download or read book Sense of Belonging and Racial Diversity at the U S Service Academies written by Leah Pound and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On college campuses, access does not equal inclusion as students of color have to navigate through a predominately White space as they struggle to feel like they belong (Jack, 2019). This dissertation focuses on racial experiences and belonging within a total institution (Goffman, 1961): the U.S. service academies, colleges that are part university and part military. Across three separate papers, I explore the institutional factors that impact the disparity between Black and White students' belonging. In Chapter 1, I apply Allport's contact theory (1954) alongside the concept of relative deprivation (Stouffer, 1949) to systematically compare the experiences of Black and White college students using meta-analytic methods. In Chapter 2, I again apply contact theory to service academy cadets while taking into consideration the negative feelings associated with interracial contact. Negative cross-racial interactions at a service academy impact Black students' sense of belonging more intensely than White students. In Chapter 3, I apply social identity contingency threat theory (Purdie-Vaughns, 2004), aversive racism (Dovidio & Gaertner, 2004), and research on diversity ideologies to explore how cadets at a different service academy may be interpreting institutional diversity efforts. By considering how diversity messages act as cues for both White and Black students, I investigate how identity contingency theory can apply to cadets and their sense of belonging. In these studies, I am interested in documenting some of the disparate experiences that Black cadets experience compared to White cadets and find the extent to which sense of belonging manifests in those disparities.

Candidates are appointed to the service academies without regard to race, creed, or national origin. Candidates must be citizens of the United States; of good moral character; at least seventeen years old and not have passed their 22nd birthday (Air Force Academy, West Point, and Coast Guard), the 23rd birthday (Naval Academy), the 25th birthday (Merchant Marine Academy) on the first day of July of the year that they enter the academy. In order to gain admission to a service academy, the high school student must meet extremely rigorous standards of performance. Candidates must apply to the service academy office of admissions just like they would apply to a civilian school. Additionally, candidates must obtain a nomination from an elected official or other nomination source. The application and nomination process should begin at least one year prior to the desired date of entry. Each of the academies offers it cadets and midshipmen a superior academic education. Graduates earn a four-year accredited Bachelor of Science Degree in a wide range of academic majors. Tuition, books, room, board, medical, and dental benefits are fully covered and valued at more than $400,000.00 over four years. Cadets and midshipmen also earn a small stipend (about $500.00 per month) to cover minor expenses. Each academy offers some of the finest intercollegiate and intramural programs in the nation. Also, the academies offer a wide variety of facilities that include premier golf courses, Olympic swimming pools, ice rinks, and for the shore-based academies: crew and sailing. Service academy graduates are commissioned in all branches of the armed forces. Merchant Marine Academy graduates sail with the U.S. Merchant Fleet, are commissioned in all branches of the armed forces, or are commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Coast Guard Academy graduates served as commissioned officers in the U.S. Coast Guard. New graduates served their country as commissioned officers that lead others. Academy graduates also fly high performance jet aircraft, command nuclear submarines, sail on technologically-advanced ships, and command troops in the field. Academy graduates defend America and our way of life. Service academy graduates are required to complete an active duty service commitment that consists of a minimum of five years of commissioned service. Some graduates elect to attend advanced military schooling following graduation in exchange for a longer term of service. Merchant Marine Academy graduates are commissioned in all the branches of the armed forces. Coast Guard Academy graduates serve in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Book Managing Diversity in the Military

Download or read book Managing Diversity in the Military written by Daniel P. McDonald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book examines the management of diversity and inclusion in the military. Owing to the rise of asymmetric warfare, a shift in demographics and labor shortfalls, the US Department of Defense (DoD) has prioritized diversity and inclusion in its workforce management philosophy. In pursuing this objective, it must ensure the attractiveness of a military career by providing an inclusive environment for all personnel (active and reserve military, civilian, and contractors) to reach their potential and maximize their contributions to the organization. Research and practice alike provide substantial evidence of the benefits associated with diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Diversity and inclusion programs are more strategic in focus than equal opportunity programs and strive to capitalize on the strengths of the workforce, while minimizing the weaknesses that inhibit optimal organizational performance. This new book provides vital clarification on these distinct concepts, in addition to offering concrete best practices for the successful management of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Written by scholars and practitioners, each chapter addresses major areas, raises crucial issues, and comments on future trends concerning diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The book will be of great interest to students of military studies, war and conflict studies, business management/HRM, psychology and politics in general, as well as to military professionals and leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a review of the literature and an annotated bibliography of research on the impact of campus diversity initiatives on American college students. First, an executive summary concludes that, overall, the literature suggests that diversity initiatives positively affect both minority and majority students on campus. It specifically identifies successful strategies such as programs which focus on the transition to college of underrepresented students, mentoring programs, specialized student support programs, programs which emphasize opportunities for interaction between and among student groups, and serious engagement with diversity issues in the curriculum and classroom. The two chapters of Part 1 provide a context for campus diversity research and explain the framework for searching, organizing, and analyzing the literature. Part 2 presents the research findings in four chapters which address: (1) representation inclusion and success of underrepresented populations; (2) campus climate and intergroup relations; (3) education and scholarship curriculum, teaching, and learning; and (4) institutional transformation findings on comprehensive campus commitments to diversity. A final chapter considers implications for the future. An annotated bibliography provides abstracts for over 250 related articles and books. (Also contains approximately 150 references.) (DB)

This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USAir Force human capital management (HCM) system is not easily defined or mapped. It affects virtually every part of the Air Force because workforce policies, procedures, and processes impact all offices and organizations that include Airmen and responsibilities and relationships change regularly. To ensure the readiness of Airmen to fulfill the mission of the Air Force, strategic approaches are developed and issued through guidance and actions of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. Strengthening US Air Force Human Capital Management assesses and strengthens the various U.S. Air Force initiatives and programs working to improve person-job match and human capital management in coordinated support of optimal mission capability. This report considers the opportunities and challenges associated with related interests and needs across the USAF HCM system as a whole, and makes recommendations to inform improvements to USAF personnel selection and classification and other critical system components across career trajectories. Strengthening US Air Force Human Capital Management offers the Air Force a strategic approach, across a connected HCM system, to develop 21st century human capital capabilities essential for the success of 21st century Airmen.

Book How to Get Into a Military Service Academy

Download or read book How to Get Into a Military Service Academy written by Michael Singer Dobson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five United States military service academies are some of the most elite schools in the nation, taking the finest high school students and turning them into commissioned officers of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. Over 60,000 students a year begin the arduous process of applying, and about 4,000 get in. At West Point alone, over 15,000 candidates start the applications process. Less than a third of them finish it. Some figure out that they aren’t going to be competitive, some get derailed with specific problems, and some get lost and drop out even though they might have gotten in. From applications to Congressional nominations, from athletics to medical qualifications, the process is unlike any other for getting into college. This book leads students and their families through the process step by step, offering the tools needed for the very best chance of success. Covering special issues and concerns like LGBTQ, women and minorities, criminal records, and more, the author also discusses whether attending a service academy is RIGHT for the prospective student, and what he or she can expect upon acceptance, admission, and attendance. Using his personal experience in helping his son through the applications process, Michael Singer Dobson provides all candidates with the ins and outs of the competition for a spot at one of these prestigious schools.
