To the world, she's the author of a blockbuster book. Her wily great-aunt, the actual author, orchestrated this mutually beneficial masquerade. Now her aunt's retiring and Sheila must draft Act Two of her own life. A cruise across the Atlantic on the Diversion is supposed to be the perfect time to do that. Two problems. First, her great-aunt saddles her with an irksome relative. Second, Sheila finds a dead body on deck. She realizes she knows a whole lot more about the interactions of the victim and suspects than the ship's officials do. Along with trying to keep her huge secret while digging up those of the victim and the suspects. What readers say about Death on the Diversion "A mystery, a murder, a cruise and an intelligent, feisty, likeable main character. What more could you ask for in a cozy? I read a lot of books and this is one of the best I have read in a long time. The plot is very imaginative and well thought out. The details of the cruise are spot on and made me feel as if I was there . . . This book reminded me of a modern-day Miss Marple (although considerably younger.) I rarely say this, but I can't wait for the next book." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "A totally unique protagonist — witty, grounded, human. An intriguing crime venue. I hope there are many more in this series." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "If the characters in this book don't remind you of people you've met...you are hiding under a big rock!! . . . Absolutely side ripping fun!! Looking forward to my next purchase of Secret Sleuth." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This is a great book! The premise is original and fun. . . . The dialogue is smart, witty, incisive, dryly humorous, and realistic. . . I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am looking forward to reading more of this series." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This was a good mystery with a victim you hated and a bunch of crazy suspects, each of whom could've done it! A fun ride!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "For all of you out there who love who-done-its and will read well beyond your bed time hour." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Now I want to go on a cruise! But only if I get to have some of the same adventures as Sheila. I enjoyed every part of this book." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "A truly intricate puzzle that kept me guessing to the end. . . Looking forward to the next in the series." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This is one of the best mystery books I've read in a very long time! ... And I truly loved the main character!! I'm ordering the second book in this series as soon as I'm finished writing this review. Great book and I recommend it highly!!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I will definitely be following Sheila to her next home." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Starting in Death on Torrid Avenue, amateur sleuth Sheila returns to dry land, adopting rescue collie Gracie, and moving into a new-to-her home, finding that mysteries abound in small-town Kentucky. Book excerpt: In the previous book, I talked about death as an event at the end of human life. I showed the facts and misconceptions of death. I also explained that the good human being is the one who is always prepared for death by continuously being in a state of good faith and actions so that when death comes, he/she will be ready to leave with no regrets. It is well known that whoever lives with good intention, actions and characters will surely have good ending and be resurrected on such good things. Therefore, we should, in this book, deeply know the concept(s) of and enrich our understanding about life. People are divided into two main categories in understanding the concept of life. The first category considers life as the time from birth to death. I consider this category as short-visioned people. The second category considers life as a temporary short phase of the real life after death. These are the visionary people. One day, when you die and be alone in your grave, then, you will know the truth of everything. At this moment, you will know the value of the time you spent in worthless matters and your inattention of invaluable activities. You will know the value of life as opposed to the lives after death. You will know then the true priority of life activities. Unfortunately, it will be too late for any reformation in your life. You will realize then the value of kind words, sights, prayers, worship, etc. You will devalue all the useless activities that take you away from the true objectives. Now, here you are still in life and have few breaths to take. Isn't it the time now to reform, regret your bad actions, and not to waste your invaluable times? Isn't it the time to have a true and sincere repentance to Allah (SWT: Glory to Him) of whatever you have done in life until now? To regret today is still much better than regretting in the grave and in the lives after death. It is your time today. Make it from your heart. Show Allah (SWT: Glory to Him) your eagerness and humbleness to return to the good path. One volunteer prayer with sincerity will be better than the entire life .In this book, I will try to highlight the facts of life compared to the Hereafter; life as a comprehensive test; and why we should be Ascetic in life.

The book also provides an overview of the life of Pascal and the story of Port Royal, giving readers a clear understanding of the historical and cultural context that influenced his intellectual development. Dive into the mind of a mathematical genius and religious philosopher, and discover the brilliance of Blaise Pascal.

Book excerpt: Pensées Blaise Pascal - From the notes for Pascal's contemplated "Apology for the Christian Religion" the Port-Royalists compiled and edited the book known as his "Pensées" or "Thoughts." The early texts were much tampered with, and the material has been frequently rearranged; but now at last it is possible to read these fragmentary jottings as they came from the hand of their author. In spite of their incompleteness and frequent incoherence, the "Thoughts" have long held a high place among the great religious classics. Much of the theological argument implied in these utterances has little appeal to the modern mind, but the acuteness of the observation of human life, the subtlety of the reasoning, the combination of precision and fervid imagination in the expression, make this a book to which the discerning mind can return again and again for insight and inspiration.

Book Spirituality Diversion and Decadence

Download or read book Spirituality Diversion and Decadence written by Peter Higbie Van Ness and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a philosophical rethinking of the meaning and nature of spiritual discipline. It offers a new way of describing and justifying practices like praying, meditating, fasting, and yoga, and it provides an innovative case for their contemporary importance. Spiritual discipline is especially effective at combatting Pascalian diversion, the pursuit of activities that occupy the mind just enough to avoid thinking about important things; and Nietzschean decadence, the proclivity for extirpating instinctive drives instead of satisfying or sublimating them. In addition to overcoming diversion and decadence in contemporary consumerist culture, VanNess recommends spiritual discipline as a means of political resistance to powerful institutions which seek to exercise social control in democratic societies by promulgating addictive patterns of consumption. Finally, he argues that regimens of spiritual discipline can serve healthful and liberating purposes, and generally promote fullness of life, only insofar as they are shaped by an ethos of intellectual criticism and aesthetic experimentation.

Book Death Calls

Download or read book Death Calls written by Robert Crossland and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wade waist-deep into the ocean to reach a body floating face down in the local harbor. Police, first responders, and onlookers quietly watch from the shoreline, but blood splotches and marks in the sand suggest that something awful has happened here. In 1981, while practicing medicine in a small community on the southern coast of British Columbia, Dr. Robert Crossland is asked if he’d be interested in becoming the local coroner. Like many, Robert has thrilled to the crusading adventures of TV coroner Wojeck and Quincy, M.E., so he takes up the challenge. But soon he is to find just how far these TV programs are from the real world of a community coroner. During the following twenty-three years, Robert will investigate and report on more than 600 sudden, unexpected deaths in his community and in the surrounding ocean, lakes, forests, and mountains. In each case, he must establish not only who has died but when, where, how, and why. As a member of the community himself, he often finds himself personally connected with those who have died. Many of the deaths are natural, of course, but a surprising number are exceptional due to complicated, startling, unforeseen, and sometimes even astonishing circumstances and findings. These are the stories of more than a hundred of these remarkable, often horrifying events. They happen in homes, at work sites, during recreation, or while travelling in boats, planes, or on roads. Some of the deaths prove controversial and Dr. Crossland participates in inquests that lead to changes in policies or procedures that reduce the risk of further deaths ... or sometimes, heartbreakingly, make no difference at all. Sudden death is always disturbing and in vivid, pithy, engaging anecdotes based on his case files and notes, Dr. Crossland shares with readers, the who, when, where, how, and why.
