Book excerpt: La théorie moderne du portefeuille montre que l'investissement dans des actifs étrangers permet de générer des gains en terme de rentabilité qui peuvent être supérieurs à ceux générés sur le marché domestique. Le principe de la diversification internationale réduit ainsi le risque du portefeuille en raison de la différence de volatilité et de la faible corrélation entre les rendements des actifs et des indices des différents marchés, ce qui conduit à une volatilité globale d'un portefeuille international plus faible que celle d'un portefeuille domestique. C'est dans ce cadre d'analyse que plusieurs travaux ont montré que la stratégie de diversification internationale des portefeuilles est devenue un choix stratégique dans la minimisation des risques (Longin et Solnik [1995] ; Solnik, Boucrelle et Le Fur [1996]). Néanmoins, cette stratégie de diversification internationale est confrontée à un ensemble de frictions. Confrontés à elles, certains investisseurs montrent des préférences fortement biaisées que ce soit en faveur des actifs domestiques ou des actifs internationaux. Ces biais peuvent ainsi trouver leurs origines dans l’instabilité des places financières illustrée par les crises mondiales ou dans le fait que les préférences (de nature psychologique) peuvent présenter des biais significatifs d’irrationalité par rapport à la norme standard représentée par l’utilité espérée.

Nelly Oudshoorn explains why it is that, although the technical feasibility of male contraceptives was demonstrated as early as the 1970s, there is, to date, no male pill. Ever since the idea of hormonal contraceptives for men was introduced, scientists, feminists, journalists, and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs have questioned whether men and women would accept a new male contraceptive if one were available. Providing a richly detailed examination of the cultural, scientific, and policy work around the male pill from the 1960s through the 1990s, Oudshoorn advances work at the intersection of gender studies and the sociology of technology. Oudshoorn emphasizes that the introduction of contraceptives for men depends to a great extent on changing ideas about reproductive responsibility. Initial interest in the male pill, she shows, came from outside the scientific community: from the governments of China and India, which were interested in population control, and from Western feminists, who wanted the responsibilities and health risks associated with contraception shared more equally between the sexes. She documents how in the 1970s, the World Health Organization took the lead in investigating male contraceptives by coordinating an unprecedented, worldwide research network. They present compelling evidence that the suppression of menstruation is a viable option for women today, and that it can be easily attained through the use of birth control pills. In fact, they reveal that contraceptive manufacturers, knowing that many women equate menstruation with femininity and that without monthly bleeding would fear that they were pregnant, engineered pill dosage regimens to ensure the continuation of their cycles. Indeed, throughout history societies have assigned menstruation powerful meaning, and Is Menstruation Obsolete? presents a fascinating history of how menstruation inspired doctors to try therapeutic bleeding for a variety of ailments, and how this therapy remained dominant in Western medicine until the early 20th century. Is Menstruation Obsolete? offers women a fresh view of menstruation, providing them with the information they need to make progressive choices about their health. This is a message whose time has come.

Book excerpt: The efficient markets hypothesis has been the central proposition in finance for nearly thirty years. It states that securities prices in financial markets must equal fundamental values, either because all investors are rational or because arbitrage eliminates pricing anomalies. This book describes an alternative approach to the study of financial markets: behavioral finance. This approach starts with an observation that the assumptions of investor rationality and perfect arbitrage are overwhelmingly contradicted by both psychological and institutional evidence. In actual financial markets, less than fully rational investors trade against arbitrageurs whose resources are limited by risk aversion, short horizons, and agency problems. The book presents and empirically evaluates models of such inefficient markets. Behavioral finance models both explain the available financial data better than does the efficient markets hypothesis and generate new empirical predictions. These models can account for such anomalies as the superior performance of value stocks, the closed end fund puzzle, the high returns on stocks included in market indices, the persistence of stock price bubbles, and even the collapse of several well-known hedge funds in 1998. By summarizing and expanding the research in behavioral finance, the book builds a new theoretical and empirical foundation for the economic analysis of real-world markets.
