Download or read book Geometry and Symmetry written by L. Christine Kinsey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-04-19 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book for mathematics and mathematics education majors helps students gain an appreciation of geometry and its importance in the history and development of mathematics. The material is presented in three parts. The first is devoted to a rigorous introduction of Euclidean geometry, the second covers various noneuclidean geometries, and the last part delves into symmetry and polyhedra. Historical contexts accompany each topic. Exercises and activities are interwoven with the text to enable the students to explore geometry. Some of the activities take advantage of geometric software so students - in particular, future teachers - gain a better understanding of its capabilities. Others explore the construction of simple models or use manipulatives allowing students to experience the hands-on, creative side of mathematics. While this text contains a rigorous mathematical presentation, key design features and activities allow it to be used successfully in mathematics for teachers courses as well.

Book Convergence or Divergence

Download or read book Convergence or Divergence written by Jeremy Black and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1994-04-12 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations with Continental Europe have been a central issue in British history. Several crucial questions can be identified: first, how similar or dissimilar was Britain, to other European countries in respect of its economy and political culture?; secondly, how far can similarity and difference be understood in terms of convergence and divergence, or of roughly parallel tracks reflecting and sustaining longstanding differences?; thirdly, did British people feel themselves to be Europeans?; fourthly did the British people take an informed and sympathetic interest in what was happening on the Continent, or did their ignorance of Europe lead to insularity and xenophobia?; and fifthly, to what extent was the British stage, and Britain as a whole involved in the affairs of Europe, diplomatically, militarily, economically, culturally? This wide-ranging, thoughtful and provocative study tackles these questions from the late Iron Age to the current debate about European integration. It is at once an important contribution to British history and a crucial work for those seeking to understand Britain's past and present position in Europe.

Book Foundations of Measurement Geometrical threshold and probabilistic representations

Download or read book Foundations of Measurement Geometrical threshold and probabilistic representations written by Patrick Suppes and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the sciences―physical, biological, and social―have a need for quantitative measurement. This influential series, Foundations of Measurement, established the formal foundations for measurement, justifying the assignment of numbers to objects in terms of their structural correspondence. Volume I introduces the distinct mathematical results that serve to formulate numerical representations of qualitative structures. Volume II extends the subject in the direction of geometrical, threshold, and probabilistic representations, and Volume III examines representation as expressed in axiomatization and invariance.

  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2001-06-12
  • ISBN : 1470425432
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Geometry written by V. V. Prasolov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001-06-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic introduction to various geometries, including Euclidean, affine, projective, spherical, and hyperbolic geometries. Also included is a chapter on infinite-dimensional generalizations of Euclidean and affine geometries. A uniform approach to different geometries, based on Klein's Erlangen Program is suggested, and similarities of various phenomena in all geometries are traced. An important notion of duality of geometric objects is highlighted throughout the book. The authors also include a detailed presentation of the theory of conics and quadrics, including the theory of conics for non-Euclidean geometries. The book contains many beautiful geometric facts and has plenty of problems, most of them with solutions, which nicely supplement the main text. With more than 150 figures illustrating the arguments, the book can be recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate-level courses in geometry.

Book Governance Order and the International Criminal Court

Download or read book Governance Order and the International Criminal Court written by Steven C. Roach and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since entering into force in July 2002, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has emerged as one of the most intriguing models of global governance. This innovative edited volume investigates the challenges facing the ICC, including the dynamics of politicized justice, US opposition, an evolving and flexible institutional design, the juridification of political evil, negative and positive global responsibility, the apparent conflict between peace and justice, and the cosmopolitanization of law. It argues that realpolitik has tested the ICC's capacity in a mostly positive manner and that the ambivalence between realpolitik and justice constitutes a novel predicament for extending global governance. The arguments of each essay are framed by a timely and original approach designed to assess the nuanced relationship between realpolitik and global justice. The approach - which interweaves four International Relations approaches, rationalism, constructivism, communicative action theory, and moral cosmopolitanism - is guided by the metaphor of the switch levers of train tracks, in which the Prosecutor and Judges serve as the pivotal agents switching the (crisscrossing) tracks of realpolitik and cosmopolitanism. With this visual aid, this volume of essays shows just how the ICC has become one of the most fascinating points of intersection between law, politics, and ethics.

Book Divergent Or Parallel Tracks

Download or read book Divergent Or Parallel Tracks written by Amelia H. Boss and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1992 Uniform Commercial Code Annual Survey brings significant changes in the length and content of this annual review, the first major revamping since it was first published in The Business Lawyer in 1964. The increasing volume of litigation under the Code and the studies and drafting projects presently underway have resulted in rather significant growth in the Survey during the recent past. The 1992 Annual Survey, however, has been streamlined drastically. With the idea that a leaner Survey will be more accessible to more readers, and thus better fulfill its obligation to inform and educate its audience, the total number of pages allocated to the Annual Survey has been reduced by approximately 75%. To accommodate such a radical reduction of the Survey, and to permit all involved in its preparation to adapt to its new style, the contents of the 1992 Annual Survey are confined to this introduction, and to articles reviewing developments in sales, personal property leasing, commercial paper and payments, letters of credit, investment securities and secured transactions. Additional coverage of significant developments, such as articles dealing with the appropriate scope of the Code, uniformity, or the impacts of electronic commercial practices, or publication of the reports of study groups or task forces, will appear in future years. As the authors and editors of the Annual Survey work together to perfect a new format and style adapted to the space reduction, we encourage all readers to contact either of the authors of this Introduction with any comments or suggestions concerning the format and substance of the Uniform Commercial Code Annual Survey.

Book Treatise on Physiological Optics Volume III

Download or read book Treatise on Physiological Optics Volume III written by Hermann von Helmholtz and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important work ever produced in the field of physiological optics, this classic is a model of scientific method and logical procedure, and it remains unmatched in its thorough and accessible approach. This is the third in a three-volume republication of the definitive English translation of Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik, originally published by The Optical Society of America in 1924 and containing everything that was known about physiological optics up until that time. The substratum consists of the data that Helmholtz furnished in the two nineteenth-century German editions that appeared during his lifetime. These volumes also contain extensive supplementary matter that Nagel, Gullstrand, and Kries incorporated in the third German edition of 1911, as well as significant new material prepared for the 1924 English translation by C. Ladd-Franklin, Gullstrand, and Kries, with copious annotations by James P. C. Southall that brought the work up to date with current research. Volumes I and II discuss the dioptrics of the eye and the sensations of vision;Volume III examines the perceptions of vision. Its topics include eye movements; the monocular field of vision; direction of vision; perception of depth; binocular vision; and many other highly important topics. Appendixes cover later findings on spatial configuration in vision and the theory of binocular instruments. Indexes for all three volumes are organized by subject and author.

Book Perceiving in Depth Volume 1 Basic Mechanisms

Download or read book Perceiving in Depth Volume 1 Basic Mechanisms written by Ian P. Howard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-volume work Perceiving in Depth is a sequel to Binocular Vision and Stereopsis and to Seeing in Depth, both by Ian P. Howard and Brian J. Rogers. This work is much broader in scope than the previous books and includes mechanisms of depth perception by all senses, including aural, electrosensory organs, and the somatosensory system. Volume 1 reviews sensory coding, psychophysical and analytic procedures, and basic visual mechanisms. Volume 2 reviews stereoscopic vision. Volume 3 reviews all mechanisms of depth perception other than stereoscopic vision. The three volumes are extensively illustrated and referenced and provide the most detailed review of all aspects of perceiving the three-dimensional world. Volume 1 starts with a review of the history of visual science from the ancient Greeks to the early 20th century with special attention devoted to the discovery of the principles of perspective and stereoscopic vision. The first chapter also contains an account of early visual display systems, such as panoramas and peepshows, and the development of stereoscopes and stereophotography. A chapter on the psychophysical and analytic procedures used in investigations of depth perception is followed by a chapter on sensory coding and the geometry of visual space. An account of the structure and physiology of the primate visual system proceeds from the eye through the LGN to the visual cortex and higher visual centers. This is followed by a review of the evolution of visual systems and of the development of the mammalian visual system in the embryonic and post-natal periods, with an emphasis on experience-dependent neural plasticity. An account of the development of perceptual functions, especially depth perception, is followed by a review of the effects of early visual deprivation during the critical period of neural plasticity on amblyopia and other defects in depth perception. Volume 1 ends with accounts of the accommodation mechanism of the human eye and vergence eye movements.
