Download or read book Bound for the East Indies written by Andrew Norman and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2020-10-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of East Indiaman HCS `Halsewell' on the coast of Dorset in southern England in January 1786, touched the very heart of the British nation. `Halsewell' was just one of many hundreds of vessels which had been in the service of the Honourable East India Company since its foundation in the year 1600. In the normal course of events, `Halsewell' would have been expected to serve out her working life, before passing unnoticed into the history books. However, this was not to be. Halsewell's loss was an event of such pathos as to inspire the greatest writer of the age Charles Dickens, to put pen to paper; the greatest painter of the age J. M. W. Turner, to apply brush to canvas, and the King and Queen to pay homage at the very place where the catastrophe occurred. Artefacts from the wreck continue to be recovered to this very day which, and for variety, interest, curiosity, and exoticism, rival those recovered from Spanish armada galleons wrecked off the west coast of Ireland two centuries previously. Such artefacts shed further light both on `Halsewell' herself, and on the extraordinary lives of those who sailed in her.
Download or read book The Watery Grave written by Richard Osborne and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002 the wreck of a British cruiser was located by divers off the coast of Tunisia. The stunning photographs of the wreck inspired Dr Richard Osborne to delve into the controversy surrounding the loss of one of the Royal Navy's proudest ships HMS Manchester. After taking part in the Norway campaign of 1940, Manchester was sent to the Mediterranean, where she was involved in the dangerous Malta convoys. On her first convoy she was struck by a torpedo and badly damaged. In danger of sinking at any minute, her skipper, Captain Harold Drew, managed to save his ship. Her next operation was to prove her last. In Operation Pedestal, the vital Malta relief convoy, Manchester was again hit by a torpedo. This time, rather than risk the lives of his crew Drew decided to scuttle his ship. For this Drew was court-martialled in what would become the longest such case in the history of the Royal Navy.Using the testimony of those involved, the highly respected naval historian Dr Osborne pieces together one of the most intriguing stories to emerge from the Second World War. Coupled with photographs of the wreck and a detailed account of its discovery, The Watery Grave: The Life and Death of HMS Manchester, will shed new light on this remarkable tale.

Download or read book Don t Fear DEATH written by Michael Wort PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book ‘Don’t Fear Death’ is my autobiography, describing my memories of my earliest childhood on the Isle of Wight in southern England during WWII, followed by moving to London and growing up there. My schooling is described at various primary schools followed by secondary schooling at Woolverstone, Suffolk, at a boys’ boarding school on the banks of the River Orwell. My university training in London is described, together with my geological work in Turkey as a student and as a graduate in Ghana, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. I then describe my return to UK for further studies firstly for an M.Sc.in Metallurgy, and later for a PhD in Mineral Technology. It also mentions the tragic death of my father just after I had finished my first degree. The book also describes my later formal immigration to Australia as a ‘Ten-pound Pommie’ and my subsequent interstate moves around Australia as I moved from job to job as my career as a mineral processing engineer developed. The latter half of the book is taken up by describing my experiences with occult arts like clairvoyancy, the Ouija board, and my meeting with the amazing clairvoyant Alan Pilkington. It was through him that I joined a Sai Baba group and eventually went to India to visit this spiritual master at Puttaparthi where I witnessed some amazing manifestations along with the rest my group. But even more amazing is that this spiritual journey was accurately predicted by a clairvoyant/trance channeling duo several years before it actually happened. My book finishes with a discussion about reincarnation and the very compelling evidence that attests to its reality.
