Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful study places African American women's stardom in historical and industrial contexts by examining the star personae of five African American women: Dorothy Dandridge, Pam Grier, Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Halle Berry. Interpreting each woman's celebrity as predicated on a brand of charismatic authority, Mia Mask shows how these female stars have ultimately complicated the conventional discursive practices through which blackness and womanhood have been represented in commercial cinema, independent film, and network television. Mask examines the function of these stars in seminal yet underanalyzed films. She considers Dandridge's status as a sexual commodity in films such as Tamango, revealing the contradictory discourses regarding race and sexuality in segregation-era American culture. Grier's feminist-camp performances in sexploitation pictures Women in Cages and The Big Doll House and her subsequent blaxploitation vehicles Coffy and Foxy Brown highlight a similar tension between representing African American women as both objectified stereotypes and powerful, self-defining icons. Mask reads Goldberg's transforming habits in Sister Act and The Associate as representative of her unruly comedic routines, while Winfrey's daily television performance as self-made, self-help guru echoes Horatio Alger narratives of success. Finally, Mask analyzes Berry's meteoric success by acknowledging the ways in which Dandridge's career made Berry's possible.

Book excerpt: This book tells all about a lost, authentically legendary species: the divas. They were the first movie stars before Pickford and Garbo, there was Geraldine Farrar, Lina Cavalieri, and Mary Garden. They were the most stunning opera singers, their personalities perhaps even bigger than their voices. Their success and their lives filled the gossip columns. Their fans loved them, grand dukes covered them in jewels. They represented both the splendorous excesses of an era of elegance and luxury, and its swan's song. There is almost nothing that survives of them today. Thankfully, their image remains and reveals all. Along with unpublished pictures of the greatest divas of this century, rediscover their voices in the accompanying CD produced specially for this publication. 70 b/w & colour illustrations

Book A Diva Was a Female Version of a Wrestler

Download or read book A Diva Was a Female Version of a Wrestler written by Scarlett Harris and published by Fayetteville Mafia Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture critic Scarlett Harris deep dives into the world of women's professional wrestling, highlighting the commodification and exploitation of the athletes as she recounts both the triumphs and adversities faced by the biggest names in the biz, including Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair, and the Bella Twins "Diva is not just another retelling of the same title matches of yesteryear—it firmly calls for the future of women’s wrestling to be placed in the hands of women themselves."—Heather Bandenberg, author of Unladylike: A Grrrl’s Guide to Wrestling "Often when I read a good wrestling book I will find myself saying “I didn’t know that” about parts of the content. In this case my reaction was more often “I hadn’t thought of it that way” and that makes for a refreshing change." —John Lister, Prowrestling Books A Diva Was a Female Version of a Wrestler: An Abbreviated Herstory of World Wrestling Entertainment, the latest book from the dynamic new publishing house Fayetteville Mafia Press, is a profoundly intelligent and opinionated cultural exploration of the history of professional women's wrestling. It has never been more relevant than now, with its strong connection to the #MeToo and Times Up movements and its passionate argument that WWE wrestling has undervalued and even mistreated women over the course of its history. The book is full of humor and astonishing insights and is a gripping, thoughtful read throughout. From the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection to the Attitude and Divas eras to the women’s wrestling evolution happening now, A Diva Was a Female Version of a Wrestler is a loosely chronologized cultural criticism of World Wrestling Entertainment’s herstory. Lifelong wrestling fan and critic Scarlett Harris uses big ideas, such as #MeToo, the commodification of feminism, and how we tell women’s stories, to chart the rise and fall and rise of women’s wrestling, and vice versa. All of the biggest names in wrestling, past and present, are here -- Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, the Bella Twins, The Fabulous Moolah, Trish Stratus, Wendi Richter, Miss Elizabeth, and Chyna -- and their stories of adversity and triumph as they fought for respect and equal treatment range from despair to exhilaration. This is an incredibly powerful book that is needed now more than ever.

Book Sex Scene

  • Author : Eric Schaefer
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2014-03-21

  • Pages : 517 pages

Download or read book Sex Scene written by Eric Schaefer and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media—film and television, recorded sound, and publishing—that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights. The provocative surveys and case studies in this nuanced cultural history reframe the "sexual revolution" as the mass sexualization of our mediated world. Contributors. Joseph Lam Duong, Jeffrey Escoffier, Kevin M. Flanagan, Elena Gorfinkel, Raymond J. Haberski Jr., Joan Hawkins, Kevin Heffernan, Eithne Johnson, Arthur Knight, Elana Levine, Christie Milliken, Eric Schaefer, Jeffrey Sconce, Jacob Smith, Leigh Ann Wheeler, Linda Williams

Book Midnight in Cairo The Divas of Egypt s Roaring 20s

Download or read book Midnight in Cairo The Divas of Egypt s Roaring 20s written by Raphael Cormack and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant portrait of the talented and entrepreneurial women who defined an era in Cairo. One of the world’s most multicultural cities, twentieth-century Cairo was a magnet for the ambitious and talented. During the 1920s and ’30s, a vibrant music, theater, film, and cabaret scene flourished, defining what it meant to be a “modern” Egyptian. Women came to dominate the Egyptian entertainment industry—as stars of the stage and screen but also as impresarias, entrepreneurs, owners, and promoters of a new and strikingly modern entertainment industry. Raphael Cormack unveils the rich histories of independent, enterprising women like vaudeville star Rose al-Youssef (who launched one of Cairo’s most important newspapers); nightclub singer Mounira al-Mahdiyya (the first woman to lead an Egyptian theater company) and her great rival, Oum Kalthoum (still venerated for her soulful lyrics); and other fabulous female stars of the interwar period, a time marked by excess and unheard-of freedom of expression. Buffeted by crosswinds of colonialism and nationalism, conservatism and liberalism, “religious” and “secular” values, patriarchy and feminism, this new generation of celebrities offered a new vision for women in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.

Book Jumping the Color Line

Download or read book Jumping the Color Line written by Susie Trenka and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first synchronized sound films of the late 1920s through the end of World War II, African American music and dance styles were ubiquitous in films. Black performers, however, were marginalized, mostly limited to appearing in "specialty acts" and various types of short films, whereas stardom was reserved for Whites. Jumping the Color Line discusses vernacular jazz dance in film as a focal point of American race relations. Looking at intersections of race, gender, and class, the book examines how the racialized and gendered body in film performs, challenges, and negotiates identities and stereotypes. Arguing for the transformative and subversive potential of jazz dance performance onscreen, the six chapters address a variety of films and performers, including many that have received little attention to date. Topics include Hollywood's first Black female star (Nina Mae McKinney), male tap dance "class acts" in Black-cast short films of the early 1930s, the film career of Black tap soloist Jeni LeGon, the role of dance in the Soundies jukebox shorts of the 1940s, cinematic images of the Lindy hop, and a series of teen films from the early 1940s that appealed primarily to young White fans of swing culture. With a majority of examples taken from marginal film forms, such as shorts and B movies, the book highlights their role in disseminating alternative images of racial and gender identities as embodied by dancers – images that were at least partly at odds with those typically found in major Hollywood productions.
