Book excerpt: Fifteen jewel-like miniature paintings--with enlarged details--and thirteen pages of exquisitely calligraphed poetry are reproduced here from a diminutive manuscript commissioned by Akbar the Great, the third Mughal emperor of India. The manuscript, which measures on 5 1/2 by 2 7/8 inches, was made in 1588, the thirty-third year of Akbar's reign, when the emperor was at the height of his power. The tiny paintings are the work of Akbar's court artists, many of whom were trained by Persian artists brought to India by Humayun, Akbar's father. A brilliant blend of Persian and Indian influences marks the work of these Mughal painters; the miniatures combine extreme delicacy of line with intense colors and complex compositions--some of which demonstrate the artists' understanding of the European concept of perspective. The various small paintings convey the whimsy, vigor, and lyrical quality of the poems they illustrate. The poems are by Auhaduddin Anvari, the greatest Persian panegyrist of the twelfth century. In her commentary on the poems and in her essay on Anvari's work and life, Annemarie Schimmel, the Museum's special consultant for Islamic art, offers insights into Anvari's complex and sometimes caustic works and gives new translations of many of the poems. The case was instituted by Lahore Ahmadiyya members as they were being defamed as unbelievers and apostates by the local anti-Ahmadiyya Ulama and denied their religious rights as Muslims. During the litigation the anti-Ahmadiyya parties, the defendants, had the support of the topmost theological and legal experts from Pakistan where the Ahmadiyya are officially branded as non-Muslims by law. But the defendants and their expert witnesses never had the intention of appearing in court as their false propaganda could never succeed in a fair and impartial forum. This book contains a history of the case and reactions to the judgment. It reproduces the text of the judgment, and consists mostly of the extensive documentary evidence submitted by the Lahore Ahmadiyya side, prepared by Maulana Hafiz Sher Mohammad and translated into English by Zahid Aziz.

Shah Siraj Awrangabadi (1715-1763), known as "Sun," was a Sunni who, after a youthful homosexual love affair, gave up sexual relationships to follow a path of personal holiness. Mah Laqa Bai Chanda (1768-1820), known as "Moon," was a Shi'i and courtesan dancer who transferred her seduction of men to the pursuit of mystical love. Both were poets in the Urdu language of the ghazal, or love lyric, often fusing a spiritual quest with erotic imagery. Kugle argues that Sun and Moon expressed through their poetry exceptions to the general rules of heteronormativity and gender inequality common in their patriarchal societies.
