Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the best way to ditch the Army B-24 airplane in calm and rough water and to determine its probable ditching performance. A dynamically similar mode of the B-24 airplane was ditched in calm water in tank no. 2 and in calm and rough water from an outdoor catapult. Its behavior was ascertained by making visual observations, by recording maximum decelerations, and by taking motion-picture records of the landings.

Book American Aircraft Development of the Second World War

Download or read book American Aircraft Development of the Second World War written by William Norton and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-07-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a little-known aspect of America's aircraft development of World War II in emphasizing unique and non-production aircraft or modifications for the purpose of research and experimentation in support of aircraft development, advancing technology, or meeting narrow combat needs. It describes some important areas of American aviation weapons maturation under the pressure of war with emphasis on advanced technology and experimental aircraft configurations. The great value of the work is illumination of little known or minimally documented projects that significantly advanced the science of aeronautics, propulsion, aircraft systems, and ordnance, but did not go into production. Each chapter introduces another topic by examining the state-of-the-art at the beginning of the war, advantages pursued, and results achieved during the conflict. This last is the vehicle to examine the secret modifications or experiments that are little known. Consequently, this is an important single-source for a fascinating and diverse collection of wartime efforts never before brought together under a single cover. The "war stories" are those of military staffs, engineering teams, and test pilots struggling against short schedules and tight resource constraints to push the bounds of technology. These epic and sometimes life-threatening endeavors were as vital as actual combat operations.

Download or read book Sabotage written by Chris Wroblewski and published by Grub Street Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of 4 July 1943, transport aircraft Liberator AL523 took off from Gibraltar’s North Front tarmac and within moments crashed into the sea with only one survivor, the pilot. The commander-in-chief of the Polish army and prime minister of the Polish government-in-exile, General W?adys?aw Sikorski, was dead. Rumours as to the cause of the crash abounded. Was it pilot error? Was it, as officially classified, merely an accident, or was it, as the authors conclude in this riveting and meticulous study, an act of sabotage? In this extensive piece of research, Chris Wroblewski and Garth Barnard examine numerous primary sources, including the complete court of inquiry transcripts, produce detailed analysis of aircraft components and systems and unearth many little-known eyewitness accounts to give this investigation a compelling conclusion. Within the book the authors also dispel several conspiracy theories that have emerged since this catastrophe; particularly that this event was a disastrous assassination attempt with blame on the British, Soviets and Nazis. This is an exhaustive piece of investigative journalism that puts the record straight once and for all.
