Book Distributional Consequences of Direct Foreign Investment

Download or read book Distributional Consequences of Direct Foreign Investment written by Robert H. Frank and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributional Consequences of Direct Foreign Investment examines the net effect of direct foreign investment (DFI) on both U.S. employment demand in the short run and on the level and distribution of domestic income in the long run. Topics covered range from measurement of home-foreign substitution to the employment impact of DFI and the long-run distributional consequences of overseas investment. Short-run labor market adjustments to unemployment resulting from overseas production transfers are also discussed. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with a survey of existing studies of the DFI phenomenon that critically evaluates the question of what firms would or could have done in the absence of a DFI alternative. The reader is then introduced to an alternative framework within which to estimate the degree of substitutability of home for foreign production. This framework consists of a microeconomic model of the multinational firm as it operates under two alternative policy regimes, one of which places no restrictions on the firm's activities and the second denies it the option of establishing a foreign production subsidiary. Input-output techniques, together with information on substitutability, are used to obtain estimates of the net employment impact of DFI. A probabilistic model of an industry labor market is also presented. In addition, the book analyzes the effect of technology transfer through licensing on the size and composition of domestic income. This monograph will be useful to practitioners who employ econometrics and mathematical economics.

Book The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Income Distribution in China

Download or read book The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Income Distribution in China written by Shiguo Liu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This specialist new economics book investigates how foreign direct investment inflow exerts influences on Chinas income inequality levels. It outlines the empirical affects of FDI using dynamic panel data mining techniques, which the author has extrapolated from a large amount of government-level source data. Income inequality is starting to exert real pressure on Chinas economy and politics. This book aims to build a bridge between FDI and Chinas income distribution issues. It sets out a general equilibrium macroeconomic model for China, then empirically tests the theoretical conclusions of this model using firm-level panel data. The covering includes; an explanation of how the author has researched the FDI-inequality nexus: a succinct survey of the available research findings on this subject, plus the authors clarification of the key elements at play: a carefully set out general equilibrium model based on endogenous growth theory for an open economy including macro, middle and micro perspectives on the FDI-income inequality nexus: an outline of the dynamic panel data method used in this key book: estimated statistical models for the impacts of FDI on wages and employment levels in China.

Book Can the Neoclassical Model Explain the Distribution of Foreign Direct Investment Across Developing Countries

Download or read book Can the Neoclassical Model Explain the Distribution of Foreign Direct Investment Across Developing Countries written by Mr.Harm Zebregs and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1990s, foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing countries has increased dramatically. The distribution of FDI flows across these countries, however, is highly uneven; only a small number attract comparatively large amounts of foreign capital. This paper investigates whether the pattern of FDI flows can be explained by the standard neoclassical model or by modified versions of this model that allow for differences in production technologies across countries. The results suggest that the standard neoclassical approach is not particularly useful if we want to understand FDI flows to developing countries.

Book Essays on Foreign Direct Investment Financial Development and Economic Institutions

Download or read book Essays on Foreign Direct Investment Financial Development and Economic Institutions written by Heather Mirsaidi Wickramarachi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation seeks to highlight the relationship between foreign investment, financial development, and economic institutions in developing countries. The determinants and impact of foreign investment has been of particular scholarly interest over the past two decades, with only recent focus on developing countries. The first two chapters focus on the institutional determinants (domestic and international) of foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing countries. The third chapter accesses the domestic distributional consequences of foreign investment in developing countries. The first chapter focuses on the domestic institutional determinants of foreign direct investment and financial deepening. Specifically, I create an institutional quality index that addresses investors desire to know more about the institutional environment within developing countries. Building upon and expanding previous theoretical frameworks for determinants of foreign and domestic capital flows, I utilize cross-sectional empirical analysis to assess the role that institutions play in promoting financial development and foreign direct investment. I find that institutional quality has a positive and significant on both foreign direct investment and financial deepening. This second chapter examines the significance of bilateral investment treaties (BITs) in promoting FDI between developing (South-South) countries. Drawing on intra-regional investment data from MENA countries, this paper initiates the examination of South-South BITs, their impact on FDI, and the theoretical channels through which changes in FDI occur. The results of my time-series cross-sectional analysis suggest that the signing of South-South BITs have a positive impact on FDI flows, but under different circumstances than North-South agreements. The final chapter considers the distributional consequences of foreign direct investment in developing countries. Specifically, I access the impact of foreign investment on the level of democracy and the level of income inequality. Additionally, I estimate the intervening impact of domestic financial development and how this interacts with FDI and the dependent variables. I find that in a sample of developing countries, FDI increases levels of democracy, as well income inequality, and that domestic financial development has an interactive effect.

Book Financial Globalization and Inequality Capital Flows as a Two Edged Sword

Download or read book Financial Globalization and Inequality Capital Flows as a Two Edged Sword written by Mr.Barry J. Eichengreen and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review the debate on the association of financial globalization with inequality. We show that the within-country distributional impact of capital account liberalization is context specific and that different types of flows have different distributional effects. Their overall impact depends on the composition of capital flows, their interaction, and on broader economic and institutional conditions. A comprehensive set of policies – macroeconomic, financial and labor- and product-market specific – is important for facilitating wider sharing of the benefits of financial globalization.

Book North South Globalization and Foreign Direct Investment

Download or read book North South Globalization and Foreign Direct Investment written by Jakob Schwab and published by Springer Gabler. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jakob Schwab analyzes central mechanisms in the systematic economic interaction between rich and poor countries. He focuses on the drivers and effects of investment in developing countries and shows that predictions of standard economic analysis may turn around when accounting for peculiarities of North-South globalization. The author shows how endowments with educational skill levels may lead to complementarity between trade and capital inflows, how inflows of direct investment capital may hinder income growth in poor countries, and how the distributional effects of the presence of multinational enterprises are perceived differently in countries of different development structures.

Book Foreign Direct Investment and Integration into Global Production and Distribution Networks

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and Integration into Global Production and Distribution Networks written by Bartlomiej Kaminski and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integration into the production and marketing arrangements of multinational corporations may offer many benefits to transition economies that, after a long period of isolation, have liberalized trade and investment. The fragmentation of production offers a unique opportunity for producers in developing countries to move from servicing small local markets to supplying large firms abroad and, indirectly, their customers all over the world. Not until the end of the twentieth century, the quot;second globalization, quot; has the ratio of trade to GDP been comparable to that during the first globalization, which took place at the end of the nineteenth century and was interrupted by World War I. Technological progress has increased the importance of the international division of labor and of global production and distribution networks. Multinational corporations have been a driving force behind these developments. As a transition economy, Poland provides an interesting case for study, as its sudden opening to foreign investment after a long period of isolation allows the process of integration into global networks to be studied more clearly.Using Poland as a case study, Kaminski and Smarzynska study multinational corporations' role in integrating a host country into the increasingly international division of labor. They provide evidence that inflows of foreign direct investment are increasing Poland's participation in global production and distribution networks. They conclude that because of the large volume of foreign direct investment inflows expected in Poland in the near future, Poland's exports - driven by fragmented production - will continue to expand at even faster rates than observed there recently. This paper - a product of Trade, Development Research Group - is part of a larger effort in the group to study the effects of foreign direct investment on economic activity.
