Book excerpt: Seagrasses are becoming widely used as in situ indicators of the relative health and condition of subtropical and tropical estuarine ecosystems. To permit meaningful management of our estuaries, there is clearly a need to develop and refine ways of effectively monitoring and assessing seagrasses. Download or read book Seagrass Ecology written by Marten A. Hemminga and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrasses occur in coastal zones throughout the world, in the part of the marine habitat that is most heavily influenced by humans. Decisions about coastal management therefore often involve seagrasses, but a full appreciation of the role of seagrasses in coastal ecosystems has yet to be reached. This book provides an entry point for those wishing to learn about the ecology of this fascinating group of plants, and gives a broad overview of current knowledge, complemented by extensive literature references to guide the reader to more detailed studies.

Book Seagrasses Biology Ecology and Conservation

Download or read book Seagrasses Biology Ecology and Conservation written by Anthony W. D. Larkum and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrasses are unique plants; the only group of flowering plants to recolonise the sea. They occur on every continental margin, except Antarctica, and form ecosystems which have important roles in fisheries, fish nursery grounds, prawn fisheries, habitat diversity and sediment stabilisation. Over the last two decades there has been an explosion of research and information on all aspects of seagrass biology. However the compilation of all this work into one book has not been attempted previously. In this book experts in 26 areas of seagrass biology present their work in chapters which are state-of–the-art and designed to be useful to students and researchers alike. The book not only focuses on what has been discovered but what exciting areas are left to discover. The book is divided into sections on taxonomy, anatomy, reproduction, ecology, physiology, fisheries, management, conservation and landscape ecology. It is destined to become the chosen text on seagrasses for any marine biology course.

Book Understanding Changes in Seagrass Communities

Download or read book Understanding Changes in Seagrass Communities written by Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve System and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students will work in groups to determine what happened to seagrass communities during June and August in 2010 and 2011. Students will estimate percent cover visually at four locations along a mock transect and analyze trends in the data collected. Students will use water quality data to help understand the trends in seagrass cover.

Book Seagrass

  • Author : Robert S. Pirog
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9781611224023
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Seagrass written by Robert S. Pirog and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrasses are flowering plants from one of four plant families, all in the order Alismatales, which grow in marine, fully-saline environments. Seagrasses are sometimes labeled ecosystem engineers, because they partly create their own habitat: the leaves slow down water-currents increasing sedimentation, and the seagrass roots and rhizomes stabilize the seabed. Their importance for associated species is mainly due to provision of shelter, and for their extraordinarily high rate of primary production. This book presents current research in the study of seagrass, including ecosystem modeling of seagrass beds; P. oceanica population genetics and proteomics; the impact of hurricanes on seagrass thalassia testudinum in the Caribbean Sea; GIS mapping of seagrass meadows; and the rise of Ruppia in seagrass beds.

Book Ecology of Seagrass Meadows in the Baltic Sea

Download or read book Ecology of Seagrass Meadows in the Baltic Sea written by Christoffer Boström and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution, structure and function of Zostera marina L. meadows in the Baltic Sea was studied. The approach involved descriptive field surveys combined with a field experiment and laboratory trials. The field surveys showed that along the Baltic Sea salinity gradient (6-30 psu), the shoot density and biomass of Zostera decrease as the species' main habitat changes from sheltered, organically rich substrates at the Swedish west coast, to exposed, organically poor sandy bottoms at the lower salinity limit of distribution in Finland. Consequently, marine and brackish areas support differing faunal assemblages, but the diversity in terms of leaf faunal taxa is similar. By re-sampling a seagrass site thoroughly described in the 1970s, an increase in faunal abundance and biomass, and changes in faunal community composition over the past 25 years were found. However, only minor changes in Zostera biomass were recorded over the same time period.

Book The Leatherback Turtle

    Book Details:
  • Author : James R. Spotila

Download or read book The Leatherback Turtle written by James R. Spotila and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive book ever written on leatherback sea turtles. Weighing as much as 2,000 pounds and reaching lengths of over seven feet, leatherback turtles are the world’s largest reptile. These unusual sea turtles have a thick, pliable shell that helps them to withstand great depths—they can swim more than one thousand meters below the surface in search of food. And what food source sustains these goliaths? Their diet consists almost exclusively of jellyfish, a meal they crisscross the oceans to find. Leatherbacks have been declining in recent decades, and some predict they will be gone by the end of this century. Why? Because of two primary factors: human redevelopment of nesting beaches and commercial fishing. There are only twenty-nine index beaches in the world where these turtles nest, and there is immense pressure to develop most of them into homes or resorts. At the same time, longline and gill net fisheries continue to overwhelm waters frequented by leatherbacks. In The Leatherback Turtle, James R. Spotila and Pilar Santidrián Tomillo bring together the world’s leading experts to produce a volume that reveals the biology of the leatherback while putting a spotlight on the conservation problems and solutions related to the species. The book leaves us with options: embark on the conservation strategy laid out within its pages and save one of nature’s most splendid creations, or watch yet another magnificent species disappear.
