Book A Review and Evaluation of Water Quality and Quantity Models Used by the Northern River Basins Study

Download or read book A Review and Evaluation of Water Quality and Quantity Models Used by the Northern River Basins Study written by Edward McCauley and published by The Study. This book was released on 1997 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes the major modelling projects undertaken to model water quality in the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave river systems. The first section describes the scope of the problem of modelling water quality in large complex systems that are relatively oligotrophic, located at relatively high altitudes, and experience highly seasonal environmental fluctuations. It also provides a summary of the models used to predict key water quality variables. Section 2 gives a general overview of the utility and shortcomings of water quality models, with the goal of establishing key criteria for assessing the successes of models developed by the Northern River Basins Study (NRBS). Section 3 summarizes key findings of the NRBS models and evaluates the results against criteria outlined in section 2. Section 4 presents a series of recommendations for modelling dissolved oxygen, transport and fate of contaminants, and distribution of contaminants in the food chain, along with strategic suggestions for future work.

Results are presented for water, suspended sediment, and bottom sediment samples collected in 1992. Contaminants studied include dioxins, furans, chlorinated phenolics, resin acids, organochlorine pesticides, and metals. The data presented will be incorporated into a synthesis report addressing the distribution of contaminants within northern Alberta rivers.

Book Fish Distribution Movement and Gross External Pathology Information for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins

Download or read book Fish Distribution Movement and Gross External Pathology Information for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins written by Thomas A. Mill and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the findings of various field and laboratory projects that studied fish distribution, movement, habitat utilization, and gross pathology in the northern Alberta river basins. Begins with a description of the river basins and related water bodies, a list of fish species found, and an overview of fish distribution and relative abundance in the mainstem rivers. This is followed by a synthesis of available information on movements of fish through space and time, as collected from fish tagging and radio telemetry studies. Movements of individual fish are also described (spawning movements and movements to summer feeding and winter habitats). Finally, critical fish habitats (spawning, feeding, and overwintering) are noted, food chain studies are summarized, and responses of fish to changes in water quality (including pathological manifestations) are reviewed.

Book Contaminants in Environmental Samples

Download or read book Contaminants in Environmental Samples written by Georgine M. Pastershank and published by The Study. This book was released on 1995 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an interpretation of analytical results for dioxins and furans in water, biofilm, sediment, invertebrates, and fish samples collected on the Athabasca and Peace Rivers in 1992. The analysis focused on the partitioning, fate, and bioaccumulation of the two compounds having the greatest potential to accumulate in animal tissue, namely 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro dibenzo-p-dioxin and 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro dibenzofuran, in order to assist in the assessment of ecosystem health and long-term effects. The report compares the levels of these compounds found upstream and downstream from pulp and paper mills, and compares the detected levels to the limits recommended under the Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines (for sediment and water) and Health Canada guidelines (for fish tissue).

Book Cumulative Impacts Within the Northern River Basins

Download or read book Cumulative Impacts Within the Northern River Basins written by Frederick J. Wrona and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.
