Download or read book Distribution of 0 and 1 Group Cod in Nearshore Waters of Placentia Bay NAFO Subdivision 3Ps 1997 98 written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a survey conducted in Placentia Bay in 1997 and 1998 to identify which physical and biotic factors may be associated with strong year classes of cod, and to identify important nursery sites in the bay. Results are presented on the distribution and size of 0- and 1-group cod catches throughout the bay in the two study years. The distribution and relative abundance are compared among sites and between years. A prediction is made of the relative strength of the 1996, 1997, and 1998 year-classes for Placentia Bay cod.

Three spawning grounds in the bay were located and surveyed, and results presented include spawning ground location, cod density distribution, proportion of cod females in spawning condition, length of mature females during peak spawning, and trends in spawning cod density over time.

Book Changes in the Timing and Location of Cod Spawning in Placenta sic Bay NAFO Sub division 3Ps 1997 1998

Download or read book Changes in the Timing and Location of Cod Spawning in Placenta sic Bay NAFO Sub division 3Ps 1997 1998 written by G. L. Lawson and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the timing and location of cod spawning in Placentia Bay between 1997 and 1998 is examined, through a combination of acoustic surveys and direct sampling of spawning aggregations. Three spawning grounds were located in spring of 1997, at Bar Haven, Perch Rock, and Oderin Bank. Spawner density at Bar Haven peaked at 0.008 fish per square metre in April of 1997, but in 1998 peaked at 0.002 fish per square metre in June, a delay of more than 80 days. The timing of peak spawning is not as easily ascertained from the data at Perch Rock and Oderin Bank. However, a delay in spawning at these sites is suggested. Furthermore, the densities of cod at the spawning grounds shifted dramatically from 1997 to 1998. Densities at Perch Rock decreased, and at Oderin Bank increased, by orders of magnitude. These results, together with related studies of larval abundance and juvenile settlement in Placentia Bay, suggest that later spawning has important consequences to successful cod recruitment within Placentia Bay.

Book Atlantic Cod

Download or read book Atlantic Cod written by George A. Rose and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive handbook, covering all aspects of the Atlantic cod including the biology, ecology, life histories, behaviour, commercial exploitation and conservation Not only is Atlantic cod one of the most valuable food fish in the world’s oceans, it is an important component of North Atlantic ecosystems and has been subject to much research into its biology, ecology and exploitation. After hundreds of years of exploitation, overfishing in the last half of the 20th Century caused many stocks to collapse, most famously the Northern cod stock off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Since then, most cod stocks have been better researched and managed, but remain in a variety of states, from fully recovered to continued decline. This book, written by world experts, describes that research and management, and the importance of cod and its fisheries on North Atlantic cultures and economies, with impacts well beyond the range of the species. Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish offers insightful chapter coverage of cod nomenclature, taxonomy, phylogeny and morphology; physiology and ecophysiology; reproduction and spawning behavior; early life history and pre-recruitment processes; migrations, movements and stock identity; feeding, growth and energetics; the place of cod in the ecosystem; the exploitation of cod through history and present day commercial fisheries and precautionary management for sustainable fisheries; impacts of climate change on cod biology and ecology; and the future of the species and its fisheries. Discusses the major commercial importance of Atlantic cod through history Provides a comprehensive treatment of the bio-ecology of the most researched and highly exploited fully marine species Examines how the decline (and recovery) of cod stocks is of great political and scientific interest An essential purchase for marine fisheries scientists Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish is a vital book for all fisheries scientists, managers and fish biologists.

Book excerpt: The devastation of many of the greatest North Atlantic cod stocks, particularly those of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Grand Banks, has become an icon for the unsustainable relation between human exploitation and Nature. Here, George Rose tells the full story of that devastation, in scientific detail, for the first time - from the formation of the North Atlantic marine ecosystems to the massive stock declines in the last half of the 20th century. Politics and the fisheries are inextricably entwined. In Cod, Rose recounts the many political influences on the fisheries over several centuries and describes how neglect from the late 1800s onward led to insufficient scientific knowledge and little protection for the stocks when massive Euro-Russian fleets targeted the Grand Banks after World War II, destroying the most prolific fishery the world has known. Cod is no armchair account, but a controversial one that includes original information on the North Atlantic fisheries.

Book Marine Coastal Ecosystems Modelling and Conservation

Download or read book Marine Coastal Ecosystems Modelling and Conservation written by Marco Ortiz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a collection of large-scale network-modeling studies on coastal systems in Latin America. It includes a novel description of the functioning of coastal complex ecosystems and also predicts how natural and human-made disturbances percolate through the networks. Coastal areas belong to the most populated ecosystems around the globe, and are massively influenced by human impacts such as shipping, mining, fisheries, tourism, pollution and human settlements. Even though many of these activities have facilitated socio-economic development, they have also caused a significant deterioration in natural populations, communities and ecosystems worldwide. Covering coastal marine ecosystems of Latin America such as the NE and SE Pacific, NW Atlantic and Caribbean areas, it discusses the construction of quantitative (Ecopath-Ecosim-Ecospace and Centrality of Node Sets) and semi-quantitative (Loop Analysis) multispecies trophic-network models to describe and assess the impacts of natural and human interventions like pelagic and benthic fishing as well as natural events such as El Niño, and La Niña. The book also features steady state (and/or near moving equilibrium) and dynamical models to support the management of exploited organisms, and applies and quantifies macroscopic indices, based on Ascendency (Ulanowicz) and Local Stability (Levins ́ Loop Analysis). Further, it discusses the determination of the Keystone Species Complex Index, which is a holistic extension of the classical concept of Keystone Species (Paine), offering novel strategies for conservation monitoring and management.

Book The Norwegian Coastal Current

Download or read book The Norwegian Coastal Current written by and published by Fagbokforlaget. This book was released on 2007 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Norwegian coastal current originates primarily from the freshwater outflow from the Baltic and the freshwater runoff from Norway. It flows northwards along the coast of Norway as a low-salinity current. This coastal region is the spawning ground for a number of important oceanic fish stocks, and the physical environment has an impact on the recruitment, growth, and geographical distribution of these stocks. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Institute of Marine Research in Norway established a coastal oceanographic observation system. This continued to evolve, and its core elements are still in operation. Drawing on the results generated by this observation system, as well as by other coastal studies, this book reviews the current understanding of the physical/chemical conditions in the Norwegian coastal current in such a way as to make the material more easily accessible to non-specialists. A series of chapters introduces readers to the geography, currents, water masses, and the temporal and spatial variability of the Norwegian coastal current. Interannual fluctuations in physical conditions are most likely to be the prime cause of ecosystem variability. The editor hopes that this book will act as a point of departure for a future summary of the ecology of Norwegian coastal waters.
