Book Going to Market

Download or read book Going to Market written by E. Raymond Corey and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Drucker once referred to the distribution infrastructure of business as "the economy's dark continent." Going to Market maps this territory for managers and scholars. The study approaches channel management as a marketing system and a key dimension of corporate strategy. Based on extensive field research on more than 50 companies, including IBM, GE, Control Data Corporation, and U.S. Steel, it considers channel issues related to sales organization, pricing, salesforce/reseller relationships, inter- and intrachannel rivalry, and gray markets. The book also discusses the historical and legal contexts for channel policies in the United States. Going to Market offers managers valuable guidance in this increasingly important aspect of competitive strategy.

Book Market Penetration Costs and the New Consumers Margin in International Trade

Download or read book Market Penetration Costs and the New Consumers Margin in International Trade written by Costas Arkolakis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I develop a new theory of marketing costs and introduce it into a model of trade with product differentiation and firm productivity heterogeneity. In this model, a firm enters a market if it makes profits by reaching a single consumer there and pays an increasing marginal cost to access additional consumers. This market penetration cost introduces an extensive margin of new consumers in firms' sales. I calibrate the key parameters of the model to match data on French firms from Eaton, Kortum and Kramarz, in particular the higher sales in France of firms that choose to export to more destinations. The model predicts that most firms do not export, and that a large proportion of firms that export in particular markets do so in small amounts. These predictions are in line with the French data, but together create a puzzle for models with a fixed cost of exporting, such as those of Melitz and Chaney. Looking at the comparative statics of trade liberalization, I find that the model predicts large increases in trade in goods with positive but little previous trade, in line with Kehoe and Ruhl. The model implies that these increases can contribute to new trade significantly more than the corresponding increases due to new exporters.

Book Why the United States Economy Has Reached a Stage of Maturity Why Companies Should Enter Foreign Markets and the Advantages of Brands Expanding Into Foreign Markets Through Embracing Global Digital Distribution Operations and E Commerce Operations

Download or read book Why the United States Economy Has Reached a Stage of Maturity Why Companies Should Enter Foreign Markets and the Advantages of Brands Expanding Into Foreign Markets Through Embracing Global Digital Distribution Operations and E Commerce Operations written by Harrison Sachs and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-08 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay sheds light on why the United States economy has reached a stage of maturity and elucidates why companies should enter foreign markets. The advantages of brands expanding into foreign markets through embracing global digital distribution operations and e-commerce operations are also punctuated in this essay. The US economy has reached a state of maturity and marketplace saturation with little growth opportunities and must therefore seek market share growth and new revenue streams overseas. Many industries within the United States are eminently saturated with a myriad of competitors. For instance, both the restaurant industry and retail industry within the United States are fraught with extreme competition to win over the wallets of customers. Furthermore, markets within the United States severely struggle to grow partially as a result of the population within the United States increasing at an infinitesimal rate. Moreover, the rate of immigration to the United States has been declining relative to how rapidly foreigners use to emigrate to the United States in past decades. Markets within the United States will likely succumbing to struggling to grow as a result of the average age of the United States population increasing. This is in part attributed to declining fertility rates and a declining net migration rates within the United Sates. Also, the United States has a very small population with only just over 327,000,000 citizens which is vastly eclipsed by population sizes in other countries, such as India and China. By entering foreign markets, companies can capitalize on the more lucrative opportunities to increase their global market share growth and generate new revenue streams. Amazon is a paradigm of a company that has financially flourished and continues to grow partially as a result of not limiting their target market to only customers within the United States. Furthermore, businesses on eBay are able to consistently sell their second-hand market items, such as action figures, for premium prices and extremely high mark ups as a result of not restricting their target market to only consumers within the United States. The internet has made it possible for a brands to appeal to a global audience and attain far greater profitability than traditional businesses ever could achieve. Substantially reduced overhead costs are also an advantage associated with being an e-commerce business, especially since these cost savings can be passed onto customers to render price points more enticing which in turn increases aggregate sales revenue. Virtual businesses can potentially financially thrive and rapidly grow irrespective of whether or not the economy of the brand's country of origin is in shambles. This is because, e-commerce businesses can tap into the power of global digital distribution and sell to foreign customers from anyplace in the world that has internet access. Ultimately, it is incumbent for more businesses to digitize business operations and embrace the power of global digital distribution the internet provides so that brands can maximize profitability and bolster brand growth, brand equity, brand recognition, and brand loyalty as they capture the demand of their emerging foreign target markets. By enhancing digital distribution efforts and e-commerce operations, brands cannot only elicit new revenue streams from emerging foreign target markets and gain more future brand ambassadors, but can also operate more cost effectively by harnessing the power of global digital distribution and a lucrative e-commerce business model.
