Book Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen

Download or read book Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen written by Dap Hartmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing maps showing the distribution of emissions from atomic hydrogen, this is an important reference source for astronomers in many different fields of research.Atomic hydrogen, the principal component of the interstellar medium, was measured over a 5-year period using the 25-meter radio telescope of the NFRA. Displayed in several projections, each map corresponds to a particular velocity interval.A CD-ROM also accompanies the Atlas, and contains the entire dataset of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey, color images in GIF format, and animations displaying the 3-dimensional data cube.

Book A High Resolution Neutral Hydrogen Study of Galaxy M81

Download or read book A High Resolution Neutral Hydrogen Study of Galaxy M81 written by L. Weliachew and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations of the galaxy M81 (NGC 3031) have been made using the two element interferometer of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Operating at the appropriate Doppler-shifted neutral hydrogen frequency a resolution of 2 arc min is synthesized which is equivalent to 1.9 kpc at a distance of 3.25 Mpc.

Book A High Resolution Neutral Hydrogen Study of the Galaxy M 51

Download or read book A High Resolution Neutral Hydrogen Study of the Galaxy M 51 written by L. Weliachew and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2 arc min synthesis study of the spiral galaxy M51 (NGC 5194) has been made in the lambda 21 cm emission line of neutral hydrogen. A morphological HI symmetry axis is found at a position angle of 22 degrees while the dynamically determined major axis is found at a position angle of -8 degrees. The velocities in the north-east outer spiral structure are found to be strongly non-circular. They agree in magnitude with predictions made by Toomre and Toomre for the tidal interaction between M51 and its companion galaxy NGC 5195. A possible continuation in neutral hydrogen of the outermost south-west spiral arm has been detected. M51 also exhibits a strong deficiency in HI surface density at its center. An upper limit of 10 billion solar mass units per beam area has been placed on the neutral hydrogen content of the companion galaxy NGC 5195. This, in turn, yields an upper limit of about 0.1 for the distance-independent ratio M(HI)/L(pg). (Author).

Book Neutral Hydrogen Aperture Synthesis Maps of IC2574 and NGC 7640

Download or read book Neutral Hydrogen Aperture Synthesis Maps of IC2574 and NGC 7640 written by G. A. Seielstad and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aperture synthesis observations with an angular resolution about 2 arc-min of two late-type galaxies have revealed HI distributions some 1.5 times larger than their photographic images. IC2574, classified as an irregular galaxy, has a well organized velocity field typical of a late spiral galaxy. The major HI concentrations do not correspond with the brightest optical features. A ridge of peculiar velocities of about 10 km/s in the region of the optical 'bar' may indicate streaming motions of gas along the bar. NGC7640 is an SBc galaxy at an inclination of 77 degrees. There is no evidence of any HI halo brighter than 100 degrees K km/s, although there is a suggestion of warping of the plane of the HI layer. (Author).
