Book Distributed Secure Design for a Multi microprocessor Operating System

Download or read book Distributed Secure Design for a Multi microprocessor Operating System written by James Steven O'Connell and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis applies the state of the art techniques for methodical design of secure operating systems to a distributed, multi-microprocessor environment. Explicit process structure and utilization of virtual environments are the fundamental concepts that form a basis for the design presented. The primary design techniques utilized in the design are segmentation, distributed operating system, security kernel, multiprocessing, 'cache' memory strategy and multiprogramming. The resulting design is for a family of distributed operating systems that can provide the power of yesterdays large computer in a microprocessor environment. Security, configuration independence, and a loop free structure are the primary characteristics of the design. The design, although hardware independent, was formulated with the Zilog Z8000 or similar microprocessor in mind. (Author).

Book Principles of Secure Processor Architecture Design

Download or read book Principles of Secure Processor Architecture Design written by Jakub Szefer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growing interest in computer security and the protection of the code and data which execute on commodity computers, the amount of hardware security features in today's processors has increased significantly over the recent years. No longer of just academic interest, security features inside processors have been embraced by industry as well, with a number of commercial secure processor architectures available today. This book aims to give readers insights into the principles behind the design of academic and commercial secure processor architectures. Secure processor architecture research is concerned with exploring and designing hardware features inside computer processors, features which can help protect confidentiality and integrity of the code and data executing on the processor. Unlike traditional processor architecture research that focuses on performance, efficiency, and energy as the first-order design objectives, secure processor architecture design has security as the first-order design objective (while still keeping the others as important design aspects that need to be considered). This book aims to present the different challenges of secure processor architecture design to graduate students interested in research on architecture and hardware security and computer architects working in industry interested in adding security features to their designs. It aims to educate readers about how the different challenges have been solved in the past and what are the best practices, i.e., the principles, for design of new secure processor architectures. Based on the careful review of past work by many computer architects and security researchers, readers also will come to know the five basic principles needed for secure processor architecture design. The book also presents existing research challenges and potential new research directions. Finally, this book presents numerous design suggestions, as well as discusses pitfalls and fallacies that designers should avoid.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book An Implementation of Multiprogramming and Process Management for a Security Kernel Operating System

Download or read book An Implementation of Multiprogramming and Process Management for a Security Kernel Operating System written by Stephen Leslie Reitz and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an implementation of multiprogramming and process management functions for the security kernel of a distributed multiprocessor system. The implementation is based on a family of operating systems designed to provide controlled access in a microcomputer network to data bases containing multiple levels of sensitive information. Multiprogramming improves system efficiency and creates a virtual environment which frees the remainder of the operating system from a dependence on processor configuration. Processor management coordinates the asynchronous interaction of system processes. This implementation describes a processor multiplexing technique for distributed kernel and presents a virtual interrupt mechanism. Its structure is loop free to permit future expansion into more complex members of the design family. (Author).

Book The Secure Distributed Operating System Design Project

Download or read book The Secure Distributed Operating System Design Project written by Stephen T. Vinter and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses some issues in distributed system security in the context of the design of a secure distributed operating system (SDOS). the design is targeted for an Al rating, as per DoD 5200.28-STD. Some new developments in formal verification methods are reported. Distributed system security is contrasted with single-host and network security, and described in the context of the Trusted Network Interpretation (NCSC-TG-005). Problems unique to distributed system security are discussed. An argument is made for implementing security features in higher protocol layers, corresponding roughly to the Session through Application layers of the OSI model. A new security policy, based on message-passing rather than reads and writes, is presented. The formal model, functional description, and a formal top level specification are also presented. Multilevel secure systems, Trusted operating systems, Distributed operating systems. (jes).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text demystifies the subject of operating systems by using a simple step-by-step approach, from fundamentals to modern concepts of traditional uniprocessor operating systems, in addition to advanced operating systems on various multiple-processor platforms and also real-time operating systems (RTOSs). While giving insight into the generic operating systems of today, its primary objective is to integrate concepts, techniques, and case studies into cohesive chapters that provide a reasonable balance between theoretical design issues and practical implementation details. It addresses most of the issues that need to be resolved in the design and development of continuously evolving, rich, diversified modern operating systems and describes successful implementation approaches in the form of abstract models and algorithms. This book is primarily intended for use in undergraduate courses in any discipline and also for a substantial portion of postgraduate courses that include the subject of operating systems. It can also be used for self-study. Key Features • Exhaustive discussions on traditional uniprocessor-based generic operating systems with figures, tables, and also real-life implementations of Windows, UNIX, Linux, and to some extent Sun Solaris. • Separate chapter on security and protection: a grand challenge in the domain of today’s operating systems, describing many different issues, including implementation in modern operating systems like UNIX, Linux, and Windows. • Separate chapter on advanced operating systems detailing major design issues and salient features of multiple-processor-based operating systems, including distributed operating systems. Cluster architecture; a low-cost base substitute for true distributed systems is explained including its classification, merits, and drawbacks. • Separate chapter on real-time operating systems containing fundamental topics, useful concepts, and major issues, as well as a few different types of real-life implementations. • Online Support Material is provided to negotiate acute page constraint which is exclusively a part and parcel of the text delivered in this book containing the chapter-wise/topic-wise detail explanation with representative figures of many important areas for the completeness of the narratives.
