Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microsystem technology (MST) integrates very small (up to a few nanometers) mechanical, electronic, optical, and other components on a substrate to construct functional devices. These devices are used as intelligent sensors, actuators, and controllers for medical, automotive, household and many other purposes. This book is a basic introduction to MST for students, engineers, and scientists. It is the first of its kind to cover MST in its entirety. It gives a comprehensive treatment of all important parts of MST such as microfabrication technologies, microactuators, microsensors, development and testing of microsystems, and information processing in microsystems. It surveys products built to date and experimental products and gives a comprehensive view of all developments leading to MST devices and robots.

Book A Reactive Approach to Comprehensive Global Garbage Detection

Download or read book A Reactive Approach to Comprehensive Global Garbage Detection written by Sylvain R. Louboutin and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999-02 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive global garbage detection (GGD) in object-oriented distributed systems, i.e., GGD intrinsically able to detect distributed cycles of garbage, has mostly been addressed via graph tracing algorithms. Graph tracing algorithms must account for every live object in the system before any resource can actually be reclaimed which compromises both their scalability and robustness in a distributed environment. Alternative non-comprehensive approaches trade-off comprehensiveness for scalability and robustness under the assumptions that distributed cycles of garbage are rare and that all comprehensive algorithms are necessarily unscalable. This thesis contends instead that distributed cycles of garbage are as likely to occur as local cycles and that a comprehensive alternative to graph tracing GGD is possible. From the GGD perspective, the combined effects of the application processes and local garbage collectors fulfill the role of a global mutator. A subset of events of this global mutator's computation, called log-keeping events, reflect either the creation, or the destruction, of inter-site paths in the global object graph. The causal history of a log-keeping event corresponds to the set of events responsible for the creation of all the paths ever created that are incident to an object. The path history of this event is defined as a subset of its causal history and contains only those events responsible for the creation of the extant paths to this object. This dissertation presents a novel approach to comprehensive GGD that entails computing dependency vectors which characterize the path history of log-keeping events that reflect the destruction of a path. These dependency vectors can be computed by propagating increasingly accurate approximations of these vectors along the paths of the global object graph. In effect, this algorithm reacts to events that may result in the creation of garbage and identifies garbage without requiring a complete scan of the whole object graph. In conjunction with a lazy log-keeping mechanism, it can therefore be shown to be both scalable and robust despite being comprehensive.

Book Communicating Process Architectures 2008

Download or read book Communicating Process Architectures 2008 written by P. H. Welch and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicating Process Architectures 2008 contains the proceedings of the thirty-first Communicating Process Architectures Conference (CPA 2008) organized under the auspices of WoTUG and the Department of Computer Science of the University of York. The aim of this book is to cover both theoretical aspects and industrial applications of Communicating Processes. Two invited speakers have given excellent contributions to this topic. Professor Samson Abramsky has worked in the areas of semantics and logic of computation, and concurrency. His work on game semantics considers interaction and information flow between multiple agents and their environment. This has yielded new approaches to compositional model-checking and to analysis for programs with state, concurrency, probability, and other features. Professor Colin O'Halloran has been instrumental in the uptake of formal methods in the development and verification of high assurance systems on an industrial scale. His research interests are in automating the use of formal methods and using these techniques at reasonable cost and on an industrial scale.

Book Distributed Garbage Collection for Network Objects

Download or read book Distributed Garbage Collection for Network Objects written by Andrew D. Birrell and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fact, the distributed collector could be used without a local collector; in that case, the programmer would insert explicit dispose commands to release an object. The algorithm was designed and implemented as part of the Modula-3 network objects system, but it should be suitable for a wide range of applications. It tolerates communication and process failure, and can reclaim the space for objects held by a crashed process. The algorithm balances functionality, performance, and fault-tolerance in a way that makes it highly practical to use in implementing distributed systems."

Book Mobile Agents Control Algorithms

Download or read book Mobile Agents Control Algorithms written by Joachim Baumann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, Joachim Baumann provides in-depth coverage of essential research issues; namely, mechanisms for locating and terminating mobile agents and for orphan detection in a mobile agent system. The reader will gain insights into the design and implementation of three control mechanisms for use in mobile agent systems: the energy concept, the path concept, and the shadow concept. The author examines these mechanisms and offers a solid argument as to why they would be better choices over existing mechanisms with respect to message complexity, migration delay, and availability. All in all, this book is an outstanding contribution to advancing the science of mobile agents and it will help the community better understand how to tame mobile agents.
