Book excerpt: A fundamental issue concerning the development of sensor network systems and algorithms is how to transmit data collected by each sensor node to a central point. This operation may place a significant strain on the energy resources of the system. However, in many applications, the ultimate goal is not merely the collection of data, but rather an estimate of certain phe¬nomenon and parameters of interest. These characteristics of sensor networks motivate the design and development of a new class of distributed estimation, fusion, optimization and control schemes which may prove to be of immense importance in exploiting the limited energy resources, data processing and communication capabilities of these systems. -- The broad aim of this research work is to analyze and develop cooperative and decentralized signal processing and control strategies for sensor networks. This will be addressed by studying the following: distributed estimation and distributed optimization in the context of sensor networks. Both problems are interrelated in the sense that the distributed optimization proposes efficient methods for the data gathering task within the network while the distributed fusion deals with the estimation of random signals using data collected across distributed nodes. -- This thesis presents novel distributed estimation and optimization algorithms and makes several contributions. Firstly, the distributed optimization problem associated with the data gathering task for a hierarchical network is defined and an objective function for the communication cost is formulated. The objective function is then minimised by employing the proposed algorithm based on the gradient descent strategy. -- Secondly, a decentralized estimation scheme is developed for tracking uncertain stochastic signals from the observations collected by the sensor nodes.

He received his B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees from The Cooper Union, New York, NY and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York, NY. He joined the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Penn State in 2002 as a Full Professor. He is Director of the Networking Research Center at Penn State. Prior to joining Penn State, Dr. LaPorta was with Bell Laboratories since 1986. He was the Director of the Mobile Networking Research Department Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, where he led various projects in wireless and mobile networking. He is an IEEE Fellow, Bell Labs Fellow, received the Bell Labs Distinguished Technical Staff Award, and an Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer Award. He has published over 50 technical papers and holds over 20 patents. Christopher Griffin holds a Masters degree in Mathematics from Penn State and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. there. Mr. Griffin has worked as a research engineer at the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory for the last six years on several DARPA and or Army Research Laboratory sponsored programs, including: the Emergent Surveillance Plexus (ESP) program as a lead engineer; the DARPA sponsored Semantic Information Fusion program under the SensIT initiative, where he co-developed a distributed target tracking system and managed the development of a target classification algorithm using Level 1 sensor fusion techniques; as a co-principal software architect for the DARPA Joint Force Component Controller (JFACC) initiative, an adaptive C2 program aimed at improving Air Force response times; and he was the principal software architect for the Boeing/ARFL Insertion of Embedding Infosphere Technology (IEIST) program. His areas of research expertise are distributed tracking systems, mission oriented control, and system modeling.

Under this award, we have achieved a number of results: (1) We have developed a method of distributed fusion that is amenable to general distributed architectures; (2) We have developed non-simulation techniques for comparing multisensor fusion algorithms that are significantly more computationally efficient than performing Monte Carlo simulation evaluations; (3) We have investigated and compared the computational complexity and tracking performance of sequential and parallel implementations of multisensor fusion algorithms; (4) We have investigated the order of processing sensors of unequal qualities in sequential implementations of multisensor fusion algorithms; (5) We have developed several schemes for controlling sensor information and have evaluated the effects of sensor request delays; and (6) We have investigated the application of ordinal optimization and super-heuristic techniques for developing efficient implementations of our new sensor management methods. Our results have provided insight as to the relative performance of various multisensor fusion methods, and the results have also provided a basis for assessing the tradeoffs between performance and computational and communication requirements when planning new sensor network architectures or communication link protocols.
