In the end, their desire for each other may heal both men if they can unlearn the lessons of the past.

Book Making Research Public in Troubled Times

Download or read book Making Research Public in Troubled Times written by M. Francyne Huckaby and published by Myers Education Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are certainly troubled times in which neoliberal capitalist patriarchy and the tyranny of racism and domination are continually reinscribed on the bodies and lives of so many. However, critical researchers understand the necessity for, as well as the difficulty of, using research to facilitate public transformations that lead to increased justice and equity. The authors contributing to Making Research Public in Troubled Times: Pedagogy, Activism, and Critical Obligations recognize the importance of diverse pedagogies, activism, and ethical choices regarding an environment that supports critical research in oppressive times. Diverse pedagogies that can facilitate the education of critical public researchers across disciplines are illustrated in the first set of chapters addressing questions like: What is important in teaching critical qualitative inquiry? How do students, materials, histories, and the public influence this teaching? What have we learned over years of attempting to teach critical qualitative research methods? The authors in the second section are activist local scholars sharing their projects and explaining what this work means for critical qualitative inquiry. This work includes methods used to incorporate critical qualitative inquiry into community activism. Finally, chapters in the last section focus on future steps and most important actions for the ways critical qualitative inquiry can be conceptualized to address concerns in these troubled times. Perfect for courses such as: Qualitative Research, Curriculum Studies, Women and Gender Studies, International Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Higher Education, Community Engagement, Policy Studies, Service Learning, and Social Justice.

Book The Health of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender People

Download or read book The Health of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender People written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals-often referred to under the umbrella acronym LGBT-are becoming more visible in society and more socially acknowledged, clinicians and researchers are faced with incomplete information about their health status. While LGBT populations often are combined as a single entity for research and advocacy purposes, each is a distinct population group with its own specific health needs. Furthermore, the experiences of LGBT individuals are not uniform and are shaped by factors of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographical location, and age, any of which can have an effect on health-related concerns and needs. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People assesses the state of science on the health status of LGBT populations, identifies research gaps and opportunities, and outlines a research agenda for the National Institute of Health. The report examines the health status of these populations in three life stages: childhood and adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood. At each life stage, the committee studied mental health, physical health, risks and protective factors, health services, and contextual influences. To advance understanding of the health needs of all LGBT individuals, the report finds that researchers need more data about the demographics of these populations, improved methods for collecting and analyzing data, and an increased participation of sexual and gender minorities in research. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People is a valuable resource for policymakers, federal agencies including the National Institute of Health (NIH), LGBT advocacy groups, clinicians, and service providers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his cavernous voice and unparalleled artistry to his fearless struggle for human rights, Paul Robeson was one of the twentieth century's greatest icons and polymaths. In Everything Man Shana L. Redmond traces Robeson's continuing cultural resonances in popular culture and politics. She follows his appearance throughout the twentieth century in the forms of sonic and visual vibration and holography; theater, art, and play; and the physical environment. Redmond thereby creates an imaginative cartography in which Robeson remains present and accountable to all those he inspired and defended. With her bold and unique theorization of antiphonal life, Redmond charts the possibility of continued communication, care, and collectivity with those who are dead but never gone.

Book The Trumpet of Conscience

Download or read book The Trumpet of Conscience written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2010-10-13 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November and December 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered five lectures for the renowned Massey Lecture Series of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The collection was immediately released as a book under the title Conscience for Change, but after King’s assassination in 1968, it was republished as The Trumpet of Conscience. The collection sums up his lasting creed and is his final testament on racism, poverty, and war. Each oration in this volume encompasses a distinct theme and speaks prophetically to today’s perils, addressing issues of equality, conscience and war, the mobilization of young people, and nonviolence. Collectively, they reveal some of King’s most introspective reflections and final impressions of the movement while illustrating how he never lost sight of our shared goals for justice. The book concludes with “A Christmas Sermon on Peace”—a powerful lecture that was broadcast live from Ebenezer Baptist Church on Christmas Eve in 1967. In it King articulates his long-term vision of nonviolence as a path to world peace.
