Book The Epistemic Innocence of Irrational Beliefs

Download or read book The Epistemic Innocence of Irrational Beliefs written by Lisa Bortolotti and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an ideal world, our beliefs would satisfy norms of truth and rationality, as well as foster the acquisition, retention, and use of other relevant information. In reality, we have limited cognitive capacities and are subject to motivational biases on an everyday basis. We may also experience impairments in perception, memory, learning, and reasoning in the course of our lives. Such limitations and impairments give rise to distorted memory beliefs, confabulated explanations, and beliefs that are elaborated delusional, motivated delusional, or optimistically biased. In this book, Lisa Bortolotti argues that some irrational beliefs qualify as epistemically innocent, where, in some contexts, the adoption, maintenance, or reporting of the beliefs delivers significant epistemic benefits that could not be easily attained otherwise. Epistemic innocence does not imply that the epistemic benefits of the irrational belief outweigh its epistemic costs, yet it clarifies the relationship between the epistemic and psychological effects of irrational beliefs on agency. It is misleading to assume that epistemic rationality and psychological adaptiveness always go hand-in-hand, but also that there is a straight-forward trade-off between them. Rather, epistemic irrationality can lead to psychological adaptiveness, which in turn can support the attainment of epistemic goals. Recognising the circumstances in which irrational beliefs enhance or restore epistemic performance informs our mutual interactions and enables us to take measures to reduce their irrationality without undermining the conditions for epistemic success.

  • Author : Vincent Lloyd
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2011-04-04
  • ISBN : 0804777551
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book The Problem with Grace written by Vincent Lloyd and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a post-secular, post-sectarian political theology, taking that burgeoning field in a new direction. With his bold suggestion that political philosophy must begin with political theology, Vincent Lloyd investigates a series of religious concepts such as love, faith, liturgy, and revelation and explores their political relevance by extracting them from their Christian theological context while refusing to reduce them to secular terms. He assembles an unusual canon of thinkers "too Jewish to be Christian and too Christian to be Jewish"—Simone Weil, James Baldwin, Franz Kafka, and Gillian Rose—to aid him in his explorations. Unique in its serious attention to both theological writing about politics and the work of academic philosophers and theorists, The Problem with Grace deepens our understanding of political theological vocabulary as a way back to the everyday world. Politics is not about redemption, but about grappling with the ever-present difficulties, tragedies, and comedies of ordinary life.

Book Innocence Knowledge and the Construction of Childhood

Download or read book Innocence Knowledge and the Construction of Childhood written by Kerry H. Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical examination of the discourses that underpin the regulation of children’s access to certain knowledge – understood as ‘difficult knowledge’ – and highlights the way this regulation contributes to the construction of childhood, to children’s vulnerability, to broader social relationships (including adult-child relations of power), and to the constitution of the ‘good’ future citizen in developed countries. Through this analysis, the author critically engages with the relationships between childhood, innocence, moral panic, censorship and notions of citizenship. She argues that the regulation of children’s access to particular knowledge largely stems from the social construction of childhood innocenceand the socio-cultural-political values that constitute and define childhood. This book explores how and why the strict regulation of children’s knowledge, often in the name of protectionor in the child’s best interest, can ironically, increase children’s prejudice around difference, increase their vulnerability to exploitation and abuse, impact on their health and well being, and undermine their competence as children, as well as their abilities to become competent adolescents and adults.

Book The Complete Topical Guide to the Bible

Download or read book The Complete Topical Guide to the Bible written by Martin Hugh Manser and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Topical Guide to the Bible provides Scripture references, definitions, and cross-references for the study of the Bible by topic. The topical approach differs significantly from the lexical approach of a concordance, and a topical guide is an essential supplement to a concordance. While a concordance is limited to the connection of biblical passages in which the same word appears, the topical approach identifies and connects all of the underlying concepts related to a topic. A concordance would not yield John 3:16 for a study of grace because the word grace does not appear in the verse, but The Complete Topical Guide to the Bible includes John 3:16 for grace because it's an essential verse on the topic. The topics in this resource include biblical, doctrinal, and historical subjects, and they are organized into nine major categories: God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, creation, humanity, sin and salvation, God's people, the life of the believer, and the last things. In addition to the great themes of the biblical message, practical issues of Christian living are also included.
