Book Through a Distorted Lens

Download or read book Through a Distorted Lens written by Laura M. Nicosia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines what and how the media teach, to and by whom, and for what purpose, in a rapidly shifting milieu of media content, platforms, and relations. While intimately concerned with education, authors move the discussion beyond the setting of formal schooling to uncover the ways in which the media contribute to individual and collective understandings of self and other, and their relations to society and communities in which they move. In doing so, the text encourages readers to transcend exclusionary discussions of citizenship to consider participation in local and global geographies against a neoliberal backdrop that marginalizes those unable to, unwilling to, and excluded from competing in the free market. Contributors extend their deliberations back to formal school settings to reaffirm pedagogies that rediscover the reading of texts—broadly defined—in the world through multimodalities. In this sense, the text strives to be transdisciplinary, and is appropriate for use in multiple disciplines and fields of study.

Book Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage Processing and Communications

Download or read book Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage Processing and Communications written by Emanuel Marom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of optics has been accelerating at an unprecedented rate, due both to the tremendous growth of the field of fiber-optic communications, and to the improvement of optical materials and devices. Throughput capabilities of fiber systems are accelerating faster than Moore's law, the famous growth rate of silicon chip capability, which has propelled that industry relentlessly over decades. In addition, new optical storage techniques push the limits of information density, with an ever decreasing cost per bit of storage. Economic investment in photonics is at an all-time high. At the same time, other fields of optics, adaptive optics for instance, are bringing new capabilities to more classical applications such as astronomical imaging. New lasers continue to be developed, with applications in display, sensing, and biomedicine following at ever-shorter intervals after the initial discoveries. Given this background, the NATO Mediterranean Dialog Advanced Research Workshop on Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage, Processing and Communications, held in Israel on October 19-21, 1998, came at an opportune moment in the history of optics. Its aim was to overview the current state-of-the-art and encourage cooperation in the Mediterranean region, with a view to highlighting and enhancing the existing potential for further development and innovation. The workshop included participants from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA.

Book excerpt: My reasons for writing this book are rather complex because I have seen no other books on the shelves that were comprehensive enough to interest the straight population as well. This book is as much for them as it is for gay people because it I believe it provides important information for them to help them understand us better and why many gay men may behave the way they do. Gay culture to the straight culture as always seemed mysterious as if we were hiding something. Perhaps we have been, so I hope this book helps them understand better the gay culture and hopefully it may help them better understand how certain behaviors may have developed and a bit of a history lesson on how gay culture originally came to be. My greatest hope is that this book will cause the much need discussion about why many of us behave the way we do. My thoughts are that the high school girly behaviors are the manifestations of unhealed wound, that I refer to as ghost wounds, that are a direct result of the damage that has been done during the very critical school age years when many of us were trying to find out who were and develop some self esteem. Unfortunately for most gay men that I have spoken to had very lonely childhoods, where they felt isolated, picked on at school, and they most often felt like outsiders. I believe these experiences have done more damage to gay people than we have ever given credit to. As a result these ghost wounds have never been healed and follow them around for a lifetime unless addressed and will influence much of your behaviors and most importantly your ability to understand and really feel the beauty and deliciousness of true intimacy whether it be with friends or lifepartners. Frequent sexual encounters are not intimacy. It's devoid of intimacy and often leads to a deeper feeling of isolation, loneliness and depression. The last of what I want to say is good luck in your que

He does this by exploring six issues that will help you make your boat seaworthy before you leave the shoreline. To succeed on your voyage, you’ll need a good solid hull that won’t leak, an anchor, maps, and lenses that help you see what’s ahead. You also must sort through your cargo, secure the ballast, raise the sails, and catch the wind. None of these things can happen, however, until you know the basics. In other words, you need milk, which is nutritious, easy to swallow, and your first food. Join the author as he leads you on a relearning of the basics of the Bible so you can move forward on a journey of faith.

Book Crossing the Healing Zone

Download or read book Crossing the Healing Zone written by Bedi, Ashok, M.D. and published by Nicolas-Hays, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medicine of the 20th century was about the treatment of illness. The medicine of the 21st century is about wellness. Crossing the Healing Zone advances the new concepts of the emerging frontiers of integrative medicine, bringing together Eastern and Western healing traditions and merging body, mind, and spirit in a Jungian perspective. The journey through the Healing Zone that Dr. Bedi proposes is guided by archetypes and myths, active imagination, dreams and synchronicities, and the neuroplastic mysteries of our complex physical reality. The Healing Zone can be described in many ways—as the fourth dimension of consciousness, as quantum consciousness, as Jung’s “psychoid space,” as the Buddhist Third Way, or as the “gap” between the ego and the soul. Here, we can access all three areas of the triune brain—reptilian, limbic, and neocortical—all of which must be addressed in order to achieve full integration and healing. The Healing Zone is a bridge between the ego and the soul—a bridge that we can cross to reach the healing wisdom of the universe. Dr. Bedi outlines how to work with psychological and soul processes in moving from illness to wellness, and provides practical methods and techniques that can help readers access and engage the Healing Zone. The book contains informative and visual guidelines and practices that can help us create and manage our own personal wellness programs and become full and active partners in our own journeys from illness to wellness.

Download or read book The Military Lens written by Christopher P. Twomey and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Military Lens, Christopher P. Twomey shows how differing military doctrines have led to misperceptions between the United States and China over foreign policy--and the potential dangers these might pose in future relations. Because of their different strategic situations, histories, and military cultures, nations may have radically disparate definitions of effective military doctrine, strategy, and capabilities. Twomey argues that when such doctrines--or "theories of victory"--differ across states, misperceptions about a rival's capabilities and intentions and false optimism about one's own are more likely to occur. In turn, these can impede international diplomacy and statecraft by making it more difficult to communicate and agree on assessments of the balance of power. When states engage in strategic coercion--either to deter or to compel action--such problems can lead to escalation and war. Twomey assesses a wide array of sources in both the United States and China on military doctrine, strategic culture, misperception, and deterrence theory to build case studies of attempts at strategic coercion during Sino-American conflicts in Korea and the Taiwan Strait in the early years of the Cold War, as well as an examination of similar issues in the Arab-Israeli conflict. After demonstrating how these factors have contributed to past conflicts, Twomey amply documents the persistence of hazardous miscommunication in contemporary Sino-American relations. His unique analytic perspective on military capability suggests that policymakers need to carefully consider the military doctrine of the nations they are trying to influence.
