Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis explores ways of distinguishing models of physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The focus is put on supersymmetric models, in particular the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and the E6-inspired Supersymmetric Standard Model (E6SSM), which are well known and well motivated models. The muon decay channel of the pseudoscalar and heavy Higgs bosons in the MSSM is studied. It is shown that these decays to muons, in some scenarios, make it possible to measure the widths of these Higgs bosons at the LHC. This is the only known way of measuring this width at the LHC. The decays to muons also allow for the mass to be measured accurately which together with the width measurement offers a unique opportunity to pin down the value of the model parameter tan Beta, which could be used to distinguish different scenarios within the MSSM and potentially in its extensions. Gluino cascade decays are investigated as a tool to distinguish the MSSM from more complex models, with the E6SSM as an example. It is shown that the longer cascade decays of the E6SSM gluinos provide less missing transverse momentum and higher lepton multiplicity, implying the higher importance of multi-lepton searches at the LHC in models with a richer low-energy particle content. The three-lepton channel is shown to be a good discriminator between the models. In the case of a gluino discovery one would typically expect a signal in this channel if it is an E6SSM gluino but not if it is an MSSM gluino. Furthermore, the implications of limits from dark matter and Z' searches on the Higgs sector and other collider phenomenology are discussed. These implications are important to constrain and differentiate models. In addition, the contribution to fine-tuning from the Z' mass is discussed as an important measure of how attractive a model is, which should be considered by model builders.

Book excerpt: If new heavy particles are discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we will need a way to distinguish among various theoretical interpretations for the new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Models of BSM physics often predict specific relations that must be satisfied by the couplings of the new particles. For example, the coupling of the quark, Kaluza-Klein quark and Kaluza-Klein gluon of the minimal Universal Extra Dimensions (mUED) model must equal the strong coupling constant of QCD up to small symmetry-breaking corrections that are radiatively generated. Using computer simulations, I investigate the possible precision with which one can measure this coupling at the LHC by examining like-sign dilepton events that include additional hadronic jets and missing transverse energy. To set bounds on the precision of a measurement of the mUED strong coupling constant, I vary this constant away from its predicted value and investigate the resulting change to the number of events expected at the LHC. I show that a measurement of the mUED strong coupling constant can be constrained to ∼5--25% provided the systematic uncertainty of the mUED signal can be reduced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider prospects for detecting and measuring the properties of Z', W' and heavy Higgs bosons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These particles are all well-motivated heavier counterparts to known SM particles. Z' and W' bosons arise when the SM gauge group is extended with additional U(1) or SU(2) factors. Heavy Higgs bosons are a feature of many models, including the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), supersymmetric (SUSY) models, and W' and Z' models. First, we consider a number of common Z' models and present next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) predictions for the cross section, forward-backward asymmetry, and rapidity distributions. We discuss methods for measuring the couplings of the Z' and distinguishing among models. Z' bosons with masses around 5 TeV should be detectable at the LHC, and the couplings of a 2.5 TeV Z' could be measured within 0.3 with a luminosity of 1 inverse attobarn. We also consider a hidden sector Z' that couples to standard model fermions via kinetic and mass mixing and serves as a mediator of isospin-violating interactions with dark matter. We combine the results of LHC Z' searches and dark matter direct detection experiments with global electroweak data to obtain mass-dependent constraints on the model parameters. Next, we consider the fact that extra broken gauge symmetries are often accompanied by extended scalar sectors. If the masses of new Higgs particles are not too large, the W' bosons may decay into heavy Higgs particles, providing new possibilities for W' detection. We consider a simple scenario where the W' couplings to fermions are suppressed, making decays to scalar pairs the dominant decay mode. Potential final states include one or two gauge bosons plus missing energy. Finally, we turn our attention to Higgs pair production in the 2HDM. Higgs pair production is a valuable tool for measuring the triscalar couplings of the scalar potential. We consider both hh resonant production and hH associated production. We identify viable search channels for the LHC and provide their expected discovery sensitivities for a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (LHC14) and a luminosity of 3 inverse attobarn. We find that discovery at the 95% C.L. is possible over most of the parameter space of the CP-conserving Type-II 2HDM.

Book excerpt: The traditional purpose of the Adriatic Meeting is to present most advanced scienti?c research conducted by the lecturers who take part in the development of their ?elds and, in addition, to provide a school-like atmosphere for young scientists. Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti?c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientists who gave extraorinarily good presentations. Certainely one reason for this success is that most of us feel obliged to help the scienti?c life in South East Europe return to its former level. However, there are very exciting new scienti?c developments as well. Part of the meeting was dominated by neutrino physics which has just seen exciting progress by establishing neutrino masses experimentally. This was d- cussed within neutrino masses and grand uni?ed theories (GUTs). General - pects of neutrino physics and CP violation, neutrino mixing and the bayron asymmetry were presented along the same lines. On the theoretical side the idea of the construction of gauge theories on non-commutative spaces and their phenomenological implications is accepted worldwide within the particle physics community.
