Book Distinctively Different

Download or read book Distinctively Different written by Gary L. Carver and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be like me! While many parents and leaders are understandably hesitant to utter such words, they are vitally needed today in a world where positive role models are often few and far between. Yet in these Cycle A epistle texts, the Apostle Paul is not bashful about challenging Christians to follow his example and live distinctively different lives -- lives that reflect the image of the risen Christ. Gary Carver shares that vision, and these outstanding messages lay out for readers the belief that we can grow every day to be more like Jesus. Gary Carver preaches at a way station on an ancient pilgrim road, offering comfort and hope to the weary traveler.... In these compelling sermons, Gary preaches to the mixed band of pilgrims jostling our way along toward the goal of spiritual discovery, and he speaks to our fears and doubts, our longings and our need, and most of all to our hunger to be closer to one whose presence forms the end of our restless trek.... Read these wonderful sermons and enjoy them. But, more important, read these sermons and take courage as you move faithfully along the pilgrim way. (from the Foreword) Thomas G. Long Bandy Professor of Preaching Candler School of Theology, Emory University Someone has said that preaching is presenting the gospel through human personality. In this collection of well-crafted lectionary sermons, Gary Carver has ably presented the gospel -- his personality is evident in the richness of examples and illustrations. June McEwen Chair, Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs Washington DC Distinctively Different is a very contemporary collection of spirited and spiritual reflections. In a quiet dialogue with Gary Carver, you are invited to revive your theological commitments, reflect on difficult questions, and renew your faith perspective. Share these motivational and innovative thoughts with your Bible study or your prayer group. Claudia Highbaugh Chaplain Harvard Divinity School Preaching effectively to the same people week after week is one of the great challenges in Christian ministry. Gary Carver shows how it is done: biblical exposition, effective illustration, and relevant application. The power of these messages is that intellectual integrity is matched with passion. Daniel Vestal Coordinator, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Atlanta, Georgia You simply must read Gary Carver's book! If you want to meet Paul in the street and not just in the sanctuary, read this book. If you want to see that Paul's insights are more contemporary than this morning's newspaper, read this book. If you want your spirit refreshed and your soul uplifted, read this book. Give yourself a break today, read this book! Buckner Fanning Pastor, Trinity Baptist Church San Antonio, Texas Gary L. Carver is pastor of First Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He has also served as pastor of churches in Alabama and Indiana. Book Different and Distinctive But Nevertheless Baptist

Download or read book Different and Distinctive But Nevertheless Baptist written by C. Douglas Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifty-year (1967-2017) story of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, richly adds to our understanding of how faith has been lived in a particular setting. "Different and distinctive but nevertheless Baptist" is a phrase that tells the rich, unique history of Northminster. Alongside a conscious lay emphasis, the church has had notable ministers like John Claypool and Chuck Poole. Originally affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, its young professional base was seen as an alternative to First Baptist Church, Jackson. The church became involved in the Alliance of Baptists and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. At the same time, the theologically progressive church remained active in the Mississippi Baptist Convention--despite its ordinations of women ministers--until its ouster in 2017. Northminster's story tells of a strong, notable, interfaith relationship with the Beth Temple Israel synagogue, an innovative social ministry, and a theology of reverent worship.

Book The Impact of College on Students

Download or read book The Impact of College on Students written by Theodore Mead Newcomb and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Kenneth Feldman and Theodore Newcomb review and synthesize the findings of more than 1,500 studies conducted over four decades on the subject. Writing in 1991, Ernest Pascarella and Patrick Terenzini maintained that The Impact of College on Students not only provided the first comprehensive conceptual map of generally uncharted terrain, but also generated a number of major hypotheses about how college influences students. They also noted that Feldman and Newcomb helped to stimulate a torrent of studies on the characteristics of collegiate institutions and how students change and benefit during and after their college years from college attendance. The Impact of College on Students is now a standard text in graduate courses as well as a standard and frequently cited reference for scholars, students, and administrators of higher education. Much of what we understand about the developmental influence of college is based on this work. In a new introduction, Feldman outlines the background for the production of the book, points out the kinds of research that have been done since it was written, and elaborates on the "accentuation effect" posited in it. He also offers a sensitive statement on the different potentials of research designs and analyses derived from sociology and psychology.

Download or read book Making Minds written by Henry M. Wellman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental psychologists coined the term "theory of mind" to describe how we understand our shifting mental states in daily life. Over the past twenty years researchers have provided rich, provocative data showing that from an early age, children develop a sophisticated and consistent "theory of mind" by attributing their desires, beliefs, and emotions to themselves and to others. Building on his pioneering research in The Child's Theory of Mind (1990), Henry M. Wellman pulls together all that we have learned in the past twenty years to shine new light on how "theory of mind" develops.
