Without attempting to beg the question, the first thing that occurs to me is that a deliberate choice of style is by no means essential, and is, indeed, often a grave hindrance to a right, reasonable, and beautiful solution of the problem of building. And by style, I here mean what is ordinarily meant by that word; that is to say, a well defined mode of building prevalent in some certain place and at some certain time. Normally, style of this sort originates from the needs of a people, from the materials at hand and from a desire to build with beauty; but in the course of its evolution it is always modified and held in control by the builder's knowledge of what has gone before or what is going on at his own time. Until the revival of learning, the age of the conscious, passionate striving to resurrect the glory of the classic ages, there were but few, if any, deliberate attempts to hark back to an earlier manner of building. The ancients had done that sort of thing in sculpture when they had imitated the early work of their forbears in a way which, strive as it might, could not seize the real archaic spirit, the way we now call archaistic. But in architecture it is hard to put one's finger on that sort of thing earlier than the time of the Renaissance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homes of Moderate Size: A Collection of Photographs and Plans of Modern Suburban and Country Homes, Following the Colonial, Italian and English Architectural Styles, and Arranged Accordingly I find that many people, mom particularly among those considering the erection of a small house, have a very vague idea of the services rendered by the Architect, and as this is a hook of small and moderate sired houses, it might not he amiss to devote a page or two to the duties and services performed by him. Briefly, the architect Inspects the site and familiarizes himself with the requirements of the family to occupy the house. He then prepares preliminary sketches, to a small scale, of plans and elevations, and when these have been worked to a degree of possibility, a perspective sketch or drawing is prepared to give the client; more comprehensive idea of the exterior appearance of the house as it will he. When these sketches are approved, working drawings, specifications and details are prepared. These are sent out for estimates to the general contractor, or contractors in the individual trades, as carpenter, mason, etc. The bids arc gone over with the owner and the contracts downward. the architect drawing the contracts and seeing that they arc properly recorded. Then the work is supervised to see that the plans and specifications arc properly carried out. The contractors make application for payments as the work progresses and the architect issues certificates for payment to the amounts that the contractor is entitled. In preparing preliminary sketches, the roughly made sketches of plans, supplemented with photos and details of houses the owner admires, are of great assistance to the architect in working out a plan, and I am sure are welcomed by almost any architect as suggestions. They give an idea more clearly than words as to what the client has in mind, though it is sometimes difficult to explain to him that they can not all be worked into one house. But the client who comes in and wants "a plan like this and an exterior like that" regardless of whether or not it is the best plan or design possible, docs not, I should say. need the services of an architect. A draughtsman can put in the form of working drawings their ideas. Part of the architect's service is in an advisory capacity, hut if advice is not wanted or heeded why pay for it? Unfortunately, many houses are built in this way. as our suburbs show. Then there is the client who does not know exactly what he does want, but would like "Just some rough pencil sketches to give him an idea." The architect is glad to work with such a client, but some, when it is explained to them that there is a charge for sketches, feel that they are being imposed upon. Sketches take time, and time is money to the architect as well as to the hod carrier. Hastily made rough sketches, unstudied, will not do justice to the client's needs or the architect's ability. I have spent days trying to work into a given area, limited by the amount to he spent, all the items listed as essential, then in a few hours made the sketch to be submitted to the owner. To ask for sketches gratis is as reasonable as to ask a doctor for a prescription and then tell him that if yon like it you will pay for it. If you wish to employ an architect go to one in whom you have confidence, either by personal acquaintance or by reputation, explain your problem to him and he guided by his advice. The bathroom that was a luxury Of yesterday is a necessity of to-day. Yet back of all build ing and building improvement is a mightier force than that of steel and stone and concrete. The house to-day is the product of ages of improvement in customs. Customs make houses what they are to-day; they are the architects and masons and carpenters of the house not built with hands. Houses, a recent author claims, were made primarily to Shelter and protect the child. Was it the tree-house of the tropics or cave-house of the mountain dwellers or the hall of the sturdy folk of the north, for the child's sake a home was devised to protect it against the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Sociologists are only now awakening to the fact that the love of father and mother for child antedated the love of husband and wife. From the cave dwelling developed the hall - or cave above ground and from the hall came the modern house. Traces Of the influence of the cave as a model may be seen in the construction of the hall. The hall stood east and west, with the door in the western end giving less access to cold winds. The roof was pitched high SO that the smoke could rise above the eyes. The lines Of the roof were irregular, so that a foe would mistake it for a grass-grown mound of earth. The entrance was through the western gable, whose lintel was so low and threshold so high that no enemy could enter without difficulty. There was a window, too, in the center of the roof.
