Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmasking Biblical Faiths aims to address many of the challenges to traditional Christian faith in the modern world. Since the eighteenth-century Age of Enlightenment, human reason, formerly tethered by the constraints of organized religion, has been set free to explore the universe relatively unchallenged. The influence of the Bible, on the other hand, weakened due to the successes of modern historical criticism, is found to be inadequate for the task of enabling the faith “once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3), in that it cannot adequately respond to the many questions about religious faith that human reasoning raises for modern human beings. In a series of short but tightly reasoned essays, Charles Hedrick explores the confrontation between traditional Christian faith and aggressive human reason, a conflict that is facilitated by Western secular education.

Book excerpt: The ancient Greek word for "truth" means unconcealing or unforgetting. Yet today many ideas and stories that were once critical to how early Christians understood, practiced, and defended their faith often remain "hidden in plain sight" in our Bibles. These ideas are concealed from us by the distance between languages, between eras, and between cultures-yet they are so worth unconcealing and unforgetting. In this book, discover: The forgotten women who co-founded Christianity Whether the first-century church thought there was a hell What happens when you realize that in Greek, faith is a verb Why gender in the Bible is more complicated than we think Which concepts our modern tradition takes for granted that would have been alien to the original readers (like homophobia) We have also forgotten that to read the Bible is to receive an invitation to adventure-to encounter the impossible, to move mountains, to walk on water. Instead, we have been taught to read the Bible tamely, to make no choices, to risk no questioning of our tradition. What would happen if we took the adventure? If we readers walked out into the wilderness toward God, leaving home far behind? If we stepped out of the boat of our received tradition, out onto the crashing waves? Let's find out.

Book Converging World Views

Download or read book Converging World Views written by Hanna Hodacs and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1805 two Scottish missionaries were stranded en route to India - in Copenhagen. Shocked by the Godlessness of the Scandinavians, they decided to stay: to deploy their evangelical energies in northern Europe instead of in Asia. As they explained in a letter home, "We pity the inhabitants of Bengal and Otaheite because they worship idols, but what better are Europeans who worship no God?" This study investigates in which conceptions and experiences of the non-European world came to influence inter-European relationships - in particular, those between Britain and Sweden during the early-nineteenth-century. Although the Anglo-Swedish contacts were marked by conflicts and tensions, they still contributed significantly to the development of a pan-Protestant European view of the non-European, non-Christian world. With its transnational focus this study illuminates previously overlooked aspects of European, as well as of British and Swedish history.

Book The Voices We Carry

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. S. Park
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers
  • Release : 2020-05-05
  • ISBN : 0802498817
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book The Voices We Carry written by J. S. Park and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaim Your Headspace and Find Your One True Voice As a hospital chaplain, J.S. Park encountered hundreds of patients at the edge of life and death, listening as they urgently shared their stories, confessions, and final words. J.S. began to identify patterns in his patients’ lives—patterns he also saw in his own life. He began to see that the events and traumas we experience throughout life become deafening voices that remain within us, even when the events are far in the past. He was surprised to find that in hearing the voices of his patients, he began to identify his own voices and all the ways they could both harm and heal. In The Voices We Carry, J.S. draws from his experiences as a hospital chaplain to present the Voices Model. This model explores the four internal voices of self-doubt, pride, people-pleasing, and judgment, and the four external voices of trauma, guilt, grief, and family dynamics. He also draws from his Asian-American upbringing to examine the challenges of identity and feeling “other.” J.S. outlines how to wrestle with our voices, and even befriend them, how to find our authentic voice in a world of mixed messages, and how to empower those who are voiceless. Filled with evidence-based research, spiritual and psychological insights, and stories of patient encounters, The Voices We Carry is an inspiring memoir of unexpected growth, humor, and what matters most. For those wading through a world of clamor and noise, this is a guide to find your clear, steady voice.

Book Theology History and Biblical Interpretation

Download or read book Theology History and Biblical Interpretation written by Darren Sarisky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Bible serves as the sacred scripture of the Christian community. It is read regularly by many people around the world today, as it has been for centuries. But how should one interpret this text? This reader presents a variety of perspective on how to relate historical and theological considerations when approaching the Bible. It encourages students and scholars to ponder how historical and theological categories shape one's view of three crucial realities: the text of the Bible, the human subject who reads the text, and the nature of the exchange between the two in the practice of reading. As historical and theological categories are applied to these realities, are they mutually exclusive, or can they be combined in some way? This reader encourages students and scholars to explore these important questions by bringing together a selection of some of modernity's most influential discussions of the issues as well as some of the present day's most distinguished attempts to weigh in on the debate.

Book excerpt: This is the true story of over thirty years of UFO and alien contact. I became involved because I was going to prove that UFOs did not exist. This started me on my long journey of finding out what the truth is. But, then I had contact with the aliens and once it began, I balked and questioned everything that they were trying to tell me. It did not take me long to realize I had to live a dual existence as I struggled to keep from looking like a nut case. For me, this is a frustrating journey and yet rewarding. I knew the road would be difficult and that there would be ridicule, but I keep steadily moving forward. Included in the book are discussions with the aliens. Some of the topics covered are: 1. UFOs and the aliens who are piloting them 2. Where the aliens come from 3. How long the aliens have been visiting Earth and why they are here 4.There are two factions of aliens here at this time 5. Why some of the aliens are abducting 6. The aliens take on our Bible, Jesus and The Creator of all 7. The coming earth changes and what it means 8.
