Book excerpt: Marine Ecotoxicology: Current Knowledge and Future Issues is the first unified resource to cover issues related to contamination, responses, and testing techniques of saltwater from a toxicological perspective. With its unprecedented focus on marine environments and logical chapter progression, this book is useful to graduate students, ecotoxicologists, risk assessors, and regulators involved or interested in marine waters. As human interaction with these environments increases, understanding of the pollutants and toxins introduced into the oceans becomes ever more critical, and this book builds a foundation of knowledge to assist scientists in studying, monitoring, and making decisions that affect both marine environments and human health. A team of world renowned experts provide detailed analyses of the most common contaminants in marine environments and explain the design and purpose of toxicity testing methods, while exploring the future of ecotoxicology studies in relation to the world's oceans. As the threat of increasing pollution in marine environments becomes an ever more tangible reality, Marine Ecotoxicology offers insights and guidance to mitigate that threat. - Provides practical tools and methods for assessing and monitoring the accumulation and effects of contaminants in marine environments - Unites world renowned experts in marine ecotoxicology to deliver thorough and diverse perspectives - Builds the foundation required for risk assessors and regulators to adequately assess and monitor the impact of pollution in marine environments - Offers helpful insights and guidance to graduate students, ecotoxicologists, risk assessors, and regulators interested in mitigating threats to marine waters

Book An Evaluation of Dissolved Oxygen Modelling of the Athabasca River and the Wapiti Smoky River System

Download or read book An Evaluation of Dissolved Oxygen Modelling of the Athabasca River and the Wapiti Smoky River System written by Gary MacDonald and published by Edmonton, Alta : The Study. This book was released on 1993 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important component of an overall mutrients model for the northern river systems is the development of appropriate dissolved oxygen models. Book Sediment Quality Assessment

Download or read book Sediment Quality Assessment written by Graeme Batley and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminated sediments represent an ongoing threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of sediment quality is, therefore, an important concern for environmental regulators. Sediment quality guidelines are now well established in regulatory frameworks worldwide; however, practical guidance that covers all of the key aspects of sediment quality assessment is not readily available. In 2005, CSIRO published its highly cited Handbook for Sediment Quality Assessment. In the ensuing period, the science has advanced considerably. This practical guide is a revised and much expanded second edition, which will be a valuable tool for environmental practitioners. Written by experts in the field, it provides coverage of: sediment sampling; sample preparation; chemical analysis; ecotoxicology; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; and ecological assessment. In addition, detailed appendices describe protocols for many of the tests to be used.

Book The Geochemistry of Stable Chlorine and Bromine Isotopes

Download or read book The Geochemistry of Stable Chlorine and Bromine Isotopes written by Hans Eggenkamp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed information on the history, analysis and applications of chlorine and bromine isotope geochemistry. Chlorine and bromine are geochemically unique as they prefer to exist as single charged negative ions. For this reason isotope fractionation reflects mostly processes that are not related to changes in the redox state and this fractionation is generally modest. The book will describe the processes that are most easily detected using these isotopes. Also isotope variations, and processes that cause them, measured in oxidised species such as perchlorates and in organic molecules will be described in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northern River Basins Study was initiated through the "Canada-Alberta-Northwest Territories Agreement Respecting the Peace-Athabasca-Slave River Basin Study, Phase II - Technical Studies" which was signed September 27, 1991. The purpose of the Study is to understand and characterize the cumulative effects of development on the water and aquatic environment of the Study Area by coordinating with existing programs and undertaking appropriate new technical studies. This report documents an application of modelling of the oxygen balance in the Athabasca River, northern Alberta, as affected by pulp mill effluent.

Book Water Cultural Diversity and Global Environmental Change

Download or read book Water Cultural Diversity and Global Environmental Change written by Barbara Rose Johnston and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published with UNESCO A product of the UNESCO-IHP project on Water and Cultural Diversity, this book represents an effort to examine the complex role water plays as a force in sustaining, maintaining, and threatening the viability of culturally diverse peoples. It is argued that water is a fundamental human need, a human right, and a core sustaining element in biodiversity and cultural diversity. The core concepts utilized in this book draw upon a larger trend in sustainability science, a recognition of the synergism and analytical potential in utilizing a coupled biological and social systems analysis, as the functioning viability of nature is both sustained and threatened by humans.

Book Assessment and Validation of Modelling Under ice Dissolved Oxygen Using DOSTOC Athabasca River 1988 to 1994

Download or read book Assessment and Validation of Modelling Under ice Dissolved Oxygen Using DOSTOC Athabasca River 1988 to 1994 written by Patricia A. Chambers and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine the existing model approach and to make recommendations for improved modelling of under-ice dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in the Athabasca River. Previous modelling efforts have involved using the DO simulation model DOSTOC, but discrepancies between observed and predicted DO concentrations for 1992 and 1993 highlighted the needs for a review and assessment of the modelling approaches used. This report reviews the structure of the DOSTOC model and input data used for modelling, then describes a stochastic run of the model using the best available values for input data and process rates, including revised rates and ratios for converting five-day biological oxygen demand (BOD) values to ultimate BOD values, measured values for sediment oxygen demand and sedimentation, and a temperature correction for pulp mill BOD decay rates. Simulation results indicate whether the model could predict DO for 1990-94 winters. Regression equations were also developed relating DO concentration to river distance.
