Book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics and Fish Community Composition in Dense Emergent Plants at Lakes Istokpoga and Kissimmee Florida

Download or read book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics and Fish Community Composition in Dense Emergent Plants at Lakes Istokpoga and Kissimmee Florida written by Aaron Joseph Bunch and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissolved oxygen exhibited substantial spatial and temporal variability at small scales (i.e., meters and hours). Centrarchid mortality experiments revealed that mortality was higher when fish were not allowed access to the surface. Stress-tolerant fishes dominated the habitats sampled. Overall, I found higher DO concentrations, higher stress-moderate fish densities, a lower probability of hypoxia, and lower centrarchid mortality in cattail habitats when compared to other habitats sampled in this study. The differences in the factors evaluated in this study (i.e., DO, mortality, and fish metrics) were probably influenced by the structural differences and specific habitat characteristics associated with the individual plant species.

Book The Structuring Role of Submerged Macrophytes in Lakes

Download or read book The Structuring Role of Submerged Macrophytes in Lakes written by Erik Jeppesen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-12-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submerged macrophytes have been the object of intensive research, and a large body of literature exists on their growth, reproduction, and physiology. Several studies have focused on the interactions between submerged macrophytes and other autotrophic components and the impact of the plants on the dynamics of nutrients, dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, oxygen, and pH. Comparatively few studies have dealt with the ability of submerged macrophytes to modulate the structure and dynamics of pelagic and benthic food webs. Recently, however, the amount of research into the structuring role of submerged macrophytes in food webs has markedly increased, and the results obtained so far suggest that sub merged macrophytes are of significant importance for the food web interactions and environmental quality of lakes, even at relatively low areal plant coverage. For example, plants affect the interactions between predacious, planktivorous, and benthivorous fish and between fish and invertebrates, including key organisms such as large zooplankton and snails. Changes in these interactions in turn may have cascading effects on the entire food web in both the pelagial and the littoral zone. To provide a forum for discussion of recent results in this growing field of research and to define future research needs, a workshop was held on 16 to 20 June, 1996, at the Freshwater Centre in Silkeborg, Denmark. The present book is a result of the workshop. It is divided into three parts.

Book Long Term Changes of Hypolimnetic Dissolved Oxygen and Phytoplankton Community Composition in a Large Lake Lake Simcoe Ontario and Revisit Dissolved Oxygen Profile Models for Lakes in Central Ontario

Download or read book Long Term Changes of Hypolimnetic Dissolved Oxygen and Phytoplankton Community Composition in a Large Lake Lake Simcoe Ontario and Revisit Dissolved Oxygen Profile Models for Lakes in Central Ontario written by Jiahua Li and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term changes in volume-weighted hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen (VWHDO) and phytoplankton community composition were examined as important water quality indicator in Lake Simcoe, a large freshwater lake with impacts by various drivers such as dreissenid mussel (DM) invasion, reduction in phosphorus (P) loading and climatic change and oscillations. VWHDO dynamics were examined by several multiple linear regressions which revealed that VWHDOmin was positively correlated with the invasion of DM and negatively correlated with hypolimnetic water temperature; VWHDO depletion rate (DR) was positively correlated with ammonia and total phosphorus (TP) annual loading. Hence, longer period of thermal stratification (L) may have offset improvements in VWHDOmin generated by P controls and invasive species. Redundancy analysis and variation partitioning revealed that DM acted on phytoplankton composition indirectly by changing the environmental conditions because environmental variables and DM individually explained little variance in phytoplankton composition but water chemistry variables and DM collectively explained a large portion of the variation. A series of models predicting the uppermost plane of the DO-depleted zone (Zox), spring dissolved oxygen (DOi) profile and end-of-summer dissolved oxygen (DOf) profile built by Molot et al. (1992) were re-analyzed, re-calibrated with more recent data (A lakes during 1990-2013), and validated (B lakes during 1990-2013). With the current brownification trend (increased DOC), we expected to see increased DOf at all depths; however, increased reduced N species (ammonia) in the hypolimnion would offset the brownification effect.
