Book Ocular Vascular Occlusive Disorders

Download or read book Ocular Vascular Occlusive Disorders written by Sohan Singh Hayreh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 863 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account of the pathogenesis, clinical features, and management of ocular vascular occlusive disorders, with the focus very much on the scientific evidence. This offers a sound basis for addressing the many controversies that surround these disorders, which collectively constitute the most common cause of visual impairment or blindness. The book is divided into two sections, the first of which addresses the basic science and encompasses vascular anatomy, blood supply and flow, and retinal tolerance time to acute ischemia. The second, clinical, section covers the presentation, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of vascular occlusive disorders of the retina, the choroid, the anterior segment of the eye, ophthalmic manifestations of carotid artery disease and the optic nerve. Ocular Vascular Occlusive Disorders, written by a distinguished world leader in the field, will be invaluable for general ophthalmologists, and particularly for retina specialists, neuro-ophthalmologists, and researchers.

Book Spreading the Word

Download or read book Spreading the Word written by Robin Myers and published by Oak Knoll Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How did printed material in Britain get from producer to reader? What were the mechanics of supply by which individuals from very varied social backgrounds came into contact with the print culture? These are hard questions lying at the heart of what is sometimes called the new bibliography. Distribution is a complex lines of book trade history because it leads out of the self-contained and familiar area of the printing office and bookshop, into the often baffling regions of redistribution and consumption, where the evidence is often fragmentary and difficult to work with. London, with its ever-increasing output in this period of books, pamphlets, newspapers, ballads and ephemera, was always the dominant influence on the market. In this volume, however, the contributors are almost all concerned with aspects of the local trade in different parts of the British Isles and, in one essay, the trade between London and America via Scotland. They provide a series of detailed investigations into the distribution networks which supplemented and meshed in with those based on the capital, and in doing so they give a fresh view of the developing relationship between print and society over three centuries."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the eyeball is indented in total darkness, within less than 200 mil liseconds an oval or quarter-moon shaped spot of light is perceived in the part of the visual field corresponding to the indented region of the retina. In the seconds following, this phosphene extends across the whole visual field and alters in structure during further eyeball indentation. It is then seen as irregular large bright spots of light, finely structured moving light grains ('light nebula') and stationary bright stars. Regular geometrical patterns appear only when both eyes are indented simultaneously [1]. When the eyeball deformation is released, part of the retina again lights up for another one or two seconds and curved light lines are seen following the course of the larger retinal vessels (Fig. 1). In the following we will review the history of this phenomenon, which played an important role during the first 2200 years of vision theories and in the development of models to explain normal vision. 2. Pre-Socratic philosophers, Plato and Aristotle Alcmaeon of Croton (6-5th century B. C. ), who was a member of the Pythagoraean sect and one of the founders of Greek medicine, was the first to describe mechanical deformation of the eyeball leading to light sensa tions. According to Aristotle's pupil Theophrast of Eresos, Alcmaeon report ed that 'the eye obviously has fire within, for when the eye is struckfireflashes out' [2, p. 88].
