Book Facing Hazards and Disasters

Download or read book Facing Hazards and Disasters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-09-10 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social science research conducted since the late 1970's has contributed greatly to society's ability to mitigate and adapt to natural, technological, and willful disasters. However, as evidenced by Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean tsunami, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and other recent events, hazards and disaster research and its application could be improved greatly. In particular, more studies should be pursued that compare how the characteristics of different types of events-including predictability, forewarning, magnitude, and duration of impact-affect societal vulnerability and response. This book includes more than thirty recommendations for the hazards and disaster community.

Book Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence Based Psychological Interventions

Download or read book Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence Based Psychological Interventions written by R. Kathryn McHugh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the existence of effective and economical psychological interventions for many mental disorders, the adoption of these treatments in service provision settings worldwide has lagged. A major gap persists between the development and identification of such interventions and their availability to the general public. Building upon the multidisciplinary literature on the science of dissemination and implementation, Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence-Based Psychological Interventions examines state-of-the-art programs to improve access to psychological interventions. Renowned experts describe leading efforts to facilitate the transport of evidence-based treatments, alongside innovative strategies for achieving the goals presented. Analyzing dissemination and implementation programs that range in aims and scope and include both national and local efforts, this book is divided into two parts. Chapters in Part I provide discussion of the history of evidence-based psychological interventions and the need for dissemination and implementation, an overview of the science of dissemination and implementation, and a review of the effectiveness of methods for clinician training. Chapters in Part II describe leading dissemination and implementation programs internationally, including the procedures and practices utilized and data on outcomes. The book concludes with a chapter by the volume's editors that proposes and discusses ten of the most important future directions for the science and practice of dissemination and implementation in mental health care. A crucial challenge in the field today is to translate the successes of treatment development research into the reduction of the public health burden of mental illness on individuals, families, and societies. This pioneering volume will be central to that effort and an essential resource for mental health practitioners and researchers, as well as decision-makers throughout the mental health care system.

Book The Science and Art of Program Dissemination Strategies Successes and Challenges

Download or read book The Science and Art of Program Dissemination Strategies Successes and Challenges written by Kathleen P. McCoy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gain a greater awareness of the processes involved in the dissemination of evidence-based interventions, as well as existing supports that help disseminate and sustain them. Many interventions that aim to help children and adolescents are found to be efficacious every year, but program developers are often not equipped with the skills, knowledge, or tools to understand how to scale up a program or sustain it after the initial funding. Consumers (e.g., service providers, who are consumers of interventions), on the other hand, often do not understand all that goes into implementing and scaling up an intervention. This special issue: introduces readers to the problem, discusses some of the challenges with disseminating programs, and presents various supports that exist which can help scale up and sustain interventions. The authors’ goal is to promote the field of dissemination science by encouraging the sharing of successes and challenges. This is the 149th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

Book Knowledge Management

Download or read book Knowledge Management written by Shaofeng Liu and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As knowledge economies become increasingly important around the world, it is essential that organizations are able to transform their knowledge into a competitive advantage. This textbook offers an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge management written specifically for postgraduate students in business and management schools. Knowledge Management presents classic and advanced concepts, models and frameworks using a clear logical structure, which covers building knowledge competence, the knowledge lifecycle, and integration of knowledge management with business decision making. An overall framework illustrates links between chapters and ensures readers can gain a body of actionable knowledge rather than learning isolated, uncontextualized topics. Based on cutting-edge research findings and covering the most advanced IT and IS technologies, this book emphasises the need for knowledge management to span boundaries across organizations, supply chains and partnerships, rather than being limited to individual learning and sharing within businesses. Knowledge Management is international in scope and includes real world case studies and role play scenarios to show how theories are applied in practice, and "think back" and "critique discussion" questions to encourage reflective learning and critical thinking. This indispensable text provides a dynamic picture of the evolution of knowledge management and demonstrates its full potential to enable better business decisions. Accompanying online resources include PowerPoint slides for lecturers and exercise questions for students.

Book Adaptive Mechanisms to Improve Message Dissemination in Vehicular Networks

Download or read book Adaptive Mechanisms to Improve Message Dissemination in Vehicular Networks written by Julio A. Sangüesa Escorihuela and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: Sobresaliente Cum Laude, , language: English, abstract: In the past, people were focused on how to build efficient highways and roads. Over time, focus shifted to mechanical and automotive engineering, in the pursuit of building faster cars to surmount greater distances. Later on, electronics technology impacted the construction of cars, embedding them with sensors, advanced electronics, and communication devices, making cars more intelligent, efficient, and safe to drive on. The applications and advantages of using Vehicular Networks (VNs) for enhancing road safety and driving efficiency are diverse, which explains why research in this area has recently emerged. In this Thesis, we focus on Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs), which are a particular subclass of Vehicular Networks, that involves a set of equipped vehicles communicating with each other via wireless antennas, without requiring the use of any infrastructure. In order to enhance the warning message dissemination process, usually necessary in VANET safety applications, we propose an adaptive broadcast dissemination scheme that automatically chooses the optimal broadcast depending on the complexity of the map and the instantaneous vehicle density in the area. Its main goal is to maximize the message delivery effectiveness, while generating a reduced number of messages, and thus, avoiding or mitigating broadcast storms. Current research on VANETs usually focuses on analyzing scenarios representing common situations with average densities. However, situations with very low or very high vehicle densities are often ignored, whereas they are very common in real vehicular environments. The aim of broadcast dissemination schemes is to maximize message delivery effectiveness, something difficult to achieve in adverse density scenarios. To address this issue, in this Thesis, we propose the Junction Store and Forward (JSF) and the Neighbor Store and Forward (NSF) dissemina- tion schemes, specially designed to be used under low density conditions, as well as the Nearest Junction Located (NJL) scheme, specially developed for high density conditions. Finally, we present a classification which includes the most relevant broadcast dissemination schemes specially designed for VANETs, highlighting their features, and studying their performance under the same simulation conditions, thus offering researchers a fair comparison. We consider that this evaluation can shed some light into the advantages and drawbacks of each solution.
