Book Liquid Crystal on Silicon Devices

Download or read book Liquid Crystal on Silicon Devices written by Andrés Márquez and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) has become one of the most widespread technologies for spatial light modulation in optics and photonics applications. These reflective microdisplays are composed of a high-performance silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) backplane, which controls the light-modulating properties of the liquid crystal layer. State-of-the-art LCoS microdisplays may exhibit a very small pixel pitch (below 4 μm), a very large number of pixels (resolutions larger than 4K), and high fill factors (larger than 90%). They modulate illumination sources covering the UV, visible, and far IR. LCoS are used not only as displays but also as polarization, amplitude, and phase-only spatial light modulators, where they achieve full phase modulation. Due to their excellent modulating properties and high degree of flexibility, they are found in all sorts of spatial light modulation applications, such as in LCOS-based display systems for augmented and virtual reality, true holographic displays, digital holography, diffractive optical elements, superresolution optical systems, beam-steering devices, holographic optical traps, and quantum optical computing. In order to fulfil the requirements in this extensive range of applications, specific models and characterization techniques are proposed. These devices may exhibit a number of degradation effects such as interpixel cross-talk and fringing field, and time flicker, which may also depend on the analog or digital backplane of the corresponding LCoS device. The use of appropriate characterization and compensation techniques is then necessary.

Book Do Peripheral HUD Warnings Affect Driving Ability

Download or read book Do Peripheral HUD Warnings Affect Driving Ability written by Abram J. Knarr and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Heads Up Display (HUD) technologies are being developed to assist drivers and reduce safety hazards. The current study used the Lane Change Task (LCT) and a Peripheral Detection Task (PDT) divided into high and low workload tracks to assess effects of employing a HUD to alert drivers to moving objects in their periphery that are possible hazards. The intent of the current study was to determine whether visual warnings displayed in either color, flashing, or color and flashing formats, would improve detection of moving stimuli without adversely impacting driving ability. Results indicated that the PDT had no significant effect on LCT performance. However, significant main effects of warning format and workload on reaction times, false alarm rates, and sensitivity were obtained. Performance on the PDT task was best when the warnings were non-flashing and yellow, especially in the low workload condition. Explanations of performance on both tasks are discussed.

Book Designing Interaction and Interfaces for Automated Vehicles

Download or read book Designing Interaction and Interfaces for Automated Vehicles written by Neville Stanton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driving automation and autonomy are already upon us and the problems that were predicted twenty years ago are beginning to appear. These problems include shortfalls in expected benefits, equipment unreliability, driver skill fade, and error-inducing equipment designs. Designing Interaction and Interfaces for Automated Vehicles: User-Centred Ecological Design and Testing investigates the difficult problem of how to interface drivers with automated vehicles by offering an inclusive, human-centred design process that focusses on human variability and capability in interaction with interfaces. This book introduces a novel method that combines both systems thinking and inclusive user-centred design. It models driver interaction, provides design specifications, concept designs, and the results of studies in simulators on the test track, and in road going vehicles. This book is for designers of systems interfaces, interactions, UX, Human Factors and Ergonomics researchers and practitioners involved with systems engineering and automotive academics._ "In this book, Prof Stanton and colleagues show how Human Factors methods can be applied to the tricky problem of interfacing human drivers with vehicle automation. They have developed an approach to designing the human-automation interaction for the handovers between the driver and the vehicle. This approach has been tested in driving simulators and, most interestingly, in real vehicles on British motorways. The approach, called User-Centred Ecological Interface Design, has been validated against driver behaviour and used to support their ongoing work on vehicle automation. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested, or involved, in designing human-automation interaction in vehicles and beyond." Professor Michael A. Regan, University of NSW Sydney, AUSTRALIA
