Book Climate Refugees in South Asia

Download or read book Climate Refugees in South Asia written by Stellina Jolly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the forms of legal protection extended to people displaced due to the consequences of climate change, and who have either become refugees by crossing international borders or are climatically displaced persons (CDPs) in their own homelands. It explores the legal response of the South Asian Jurisdictions to these refugee-like situations, and also to what extent these people are protected under current international law. The book critically examines and assesses whether States have obligations to protect people displaced by climate change under international refugee law (IRL) and international climate change law (ICCL). It discusses the issue of climate migration in South Asia, analyzes the legal and judicial response initiated by South Asian nations, and also investigates the role of SAARC in relation to climate change and climate refugees. Drawing on the International Legal Standards and States’ Practices in South Asia regarding climate refugees, the book shows how IRL, ICCL, and IHRL (international human rights law) have been used to address and identify the gaps in the global legal protection framework concerning the contours of the normative debate on climate refugees, climate change displacement, migration, forced migration, susceptibility to climate change, typology of climate change-induced displacement, role of the SAARC and its municipal legal systems, approaches to climate change, human mobility and developing a hybrid regional law, or advocating a legal alternative of equal measure in a region characterized by diversity and multiculturalism. The book offers valuable takeaways for students, researchers, consultants, practitioners and policymakers alike.

This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Asian region has been especially prone to mass displacement and relocations owing to its varied geographical settings as well as socio-political factors. This book examines the women’s perspective on issues related to displacement, loss, conflict, and rehabilitation. It maps the diverse engagements with women’s experiences of displacement in the South Asian region through a nuanced examination of unexplored literary narratives, life writing and memoirs, cultural discourses, and social practices. The book explores themes like sexuality and the female body, women and the national identity, violence against women in Indian Partition narratives, and stories of exile in real life and fairy tales. It also offers an understanding of the ruptures created by dislocation and exile in memory, identity, and culture by analyzing the spaces occupied by displaced women and their lived experiences. The volume looks at the multiplicity of reasons behind women’s displacement and offers a wider perspective on the intersections between gender, migration, and marginalization. Book Refugees Citizenship and Belonging in South Asia

Download or read book Refugees Citizenship and Belonging in South Asia written by Nasreen Chowdhory and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines forced migration of two refugees groups in South Asia. The author discusses the claims of “belonging” of refugees, and asserts that in practice “belonging” can extend beyond the state-centric understanding of membership in South Asian states. She addresses two sets of interrelated questions: what factors determine whether refugees are relocated to their home countries in South Asia, and why do some repatriated groups re-integrate more successfully than others in “post-peace” South Asian states? This book answers these questions through a study of refugees from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who sought asylum in India and were later relocated to their countries of origin. Since postcolonial societies have a typical kind of state-formation, in South Asia’s case this has profoundly shaped questions of belonging and membership. The debate tends to focus on citizenship, making it a benchmark to demarcate inclusion and exclusion in South Asian states. In addition to qualitative analysis, this book includes narratives of Sri Lankan and Chakma refugees in post-conflict and post-peace Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively, and critiques the impact of macro policies from the bottom up.

Book Missing Boundaries

Download or read book Missing Boundaries written by P. R. Chari and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia has 14 per cent of the world's refugee population and is the principal source and host of refugees. The causes behind the displacement -- political instability, armed conflict, lack of resources and so on in South Asia and its immediate neighbourhood have not declined but, in fact, have been increasing; and the security threats posed by the refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) is set to increase, given the lack of resources and poor governance prevalent in the region. Yet, none of the countries in South Asia have signed any major convention or treaty at the international level in regard to refugees; nor have they any national legislation or regional framework to deal with these issues. A comprehensive study focusing on the various dimensions of displacement in South Asia including refugees, migrants, stateless persons and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) was felt imperative by the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies. Acknowledging non-traditional sources of insecurity as being the cornerstone of human insecurity, the IPCS had commenced to focus on a range of non-military threats to security including Drug Trafficking, Terrorism, Refugees, Organised Crime, Governance and Environmental Issues. The current volume with specific focus on migration and displacement is a small step in that direction. Published in association with Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies.

Book Regionalism and Regional Security in South Asia

Download or read book Regionalism and Regional Security in South Asia written by Zahid Shahab Ahmed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zahid Shahab Ahmed evaluates the progress of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). This study goes beyond economic integration to present a detailed appraisal of cooperation under the overarching themes of economic cooperation, environmental security, human welfare, and cooperation in security matters. According to the author, SAARC is making progress in addressing the myriad of issues on its agenda. The transition from agreements to actions and frequent interactions among the member states has boosted confidence. The progress of SAARC is more evident in the less controversial areas of human security, such as poverty alleviation, health and safety, human resources development, and higher education. Notwithstanding enthusiastic commitments reflected in agreements and action plans, there is a gulf between rhetoric and implementation most notably in sensitive areas relating to traditional security. In the light of the findings of this study, the author proposes that greater cooperation in common human security areas has a potential to pave the way for a cooperation on issues of a ’contentious’ nature, particularly terrorism.
