Book excerpt: Across the twentieth century?s different avant-garde movements, and as the processes through which music freed itself from its own norms moved forward, sound burst forth in different directions in the field of visual arts, coming into its own in hitherto unexplored artistic spaces. Audible phenomena and events became plastic materials that could be processed vocally and technically ?on one side, sound arts were mixed with visual arts, coinciding with the technological development of new mediums of sound recording and synthesis; and, on the other, the interest in the soundscapes of industrial and urban modernity, and the sounds of the phonatory body (mouth noises, tongue clicking, different ways of drawing breath, and so on). 00Therefore, this exhibition displays a selection of forms, genres, approaches and unique examples as it spans different initiatives that moved beyond pre-defined categories in modern and contemporary art until 1980. Book excerpt: This book examines the many functions of paper in the fine art and aesthetics of the early twentieth-century modernist or historic avant-garde (Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism and many more). With its many collages and photomontages, the historic avant-garde is generally considered to have transformed paper from a mere support into an artistic medium and to have assisted in art on paper gaining a firm autonomy. Bringing together an international team of scholars, this book shows that the story of paper in the avant-garde has thereby hardly been told. The first section looks at a selection of canonized individual avant-gardists’ work on paper to demonstrate that the material and formal analysis of paper in the avant-garde’s artistic production still holds much in store. In the second section, chapters zoom in on forms and formats of collective artistic production that deployed paper to move around reproductions of fine art works, to facilitate the dialogue between avant-gardists, to better promote their work among patrons, and to make their work available to a wider audience. Chapters in the third section lay bare how certain groups within the avant-garde began to massively create monochrome works, because these could be easily reproduced when transferred to, or reproduced as, linocuts. In the last section of the book, chapters explore how the avant-garde’s attentiveness to paper almost always also implied a critique of the ways in which paper, and all that it stood for, was treated and labored in European culture and society more broadly. This illustrated book is the fifth edition in a series that documents and contextualizes The Met’s annual rooftop commissions. Book excerpt: This publication has been produced on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, encompassing more than six decades of the œuvre of the influential American artist Carolee Schneemann (born 1939). In it, renowned scholars and experts approach various aspects of the artist's work based on new research. Starting with Schneemann's early portraits and landscapes of the 1950s, the book traces the developments that led to the assemblages and painting constructions created in the 1960s. During this period, she combined painterly investigations of the figure with art historical inquiries while incorporating photographs and other objects of personal significance into her works. An early proponent of techniques designed to reduce the influence of subjective creative choices, she resorted to unusual expedients: fire, for example, became a constitutive part of her process. Schneemann's ambition to expand painting beyond the canvas's confines was evident early on, and her explorations quickly encompassed other media and disciplines including dance, performance, photography, and film. She was a leading protagonist in New York's downtown avant-garde arts scene, which flourished in these fields, while also synthesizing different disciplines in the forms of Happenings and events. Schneemann soon became a vital element in the visual compositions that, in the role of artist, she was creating, posing herself the question “Can I be both image and image-maker?” The same irreverent spirit and embrace the sensuality is palpable in her experimental films, dances, Kinetic Theater pieces, and radical performances, culminating in her multimedia installations, all of which can be seen to grow out of her efforts to expand painting. --
