Umbauten, Umnutzungen und Umwertungen bestehender Bauten prägten auch die antike Baukultur. In baulichen Veränderungen wie An-, Um- und Einbauten, aber auch in Restaurierungen, Wiederaufbauten und Translozierungen sowie in der Wiederverwendung von Baugliedern und Baumaterialien spiegeln und spiegelten sich politische, ökonomische, gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Transformationsprozesse. Mit bauforscherischen Methoden können konkrete Spuren des Umbauens dokumentiert und damit die technischkonstruktive Seite baulicher Transformationsprozesse in der Antike ergründet werden. Diese Spuren umfassen - nur zum Beispiel - Baufugen, umgearbeitete und/oder wiederverwendete Bauglieder, doppelte Verdübelungen und Verklammerungen, sich überlagernde Standspuren etc. Ihr sorgfältiges Studium ermöglicht die Rekonstruktion der Bau- und Umbaugeschichte einzelner Bauten und Ensembles, aber auch - darauf aufbauend - der dahinterliegenden politischen, ökonomischen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Gründe und Strategien für Umbau-, Umnutzungs- und Umwertungsprozesse in der antiken Architektur.
