Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Pancreas and Their Surgical Treatment It is only within recent years that any material progress in regard to our knowledge of the functions and diseases of the pancreas has been made. The admirable works of Korte and Oser, the fruitful researches of Opie and others into the functions and significance of the islands of Langerhans, the observations lately made as to the causation and treatment of acute and chronic pancreatitis, - have all attracted much attention from the profession, and have excited a keener interest in the pathology and treatment of the diseases of this gland. The publication of a work dealing with the surgical aspects of pancreatic disease may therefore be held to have a twofold object: to record and to review the work done in the past, and to indicate, so far as is possible, the scope and trend of future research. This has been our intention, and these have been our aims in the present work; and though we recognize fully its incompleteness, we venture to think that this is, in no small measure, inevitable in the present state of our knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pancreas: Its Surgery and Pathology In the chapter on histology, and again later under the heading of diabetes, we have discussed the structure and supposed functions of those characteristic groups of cells known as the islands of Langerhans. In doing so we have endeavoured to impartially summarise the evidence for and against the contending views that are held with regard to them, but, as will be gathered from the text, we personally are of opinion that the balance of available evidence strongly points to their being independent struc tures related to the control of carbohydrate metabolism within the body that the pancreas undoubtedly exerts. Book excerpt: Palliative surgery can greatly contribute to improving symptom control and quality of life for terminal cancer patients. Owing to the advanced stage of the disease, however, this type of surgery is also associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is therefore important for surgeons to have a sound understanding of the medical and scientific background underlying treatment decisions in palliative surgery, a foundation that this book provides. The opening chapters examine the relationship between palliative medicine and palliative surgery and address general issues including pain management and anesthesiological considerations. The role of palliative surgery in a wide range of disease settings is then thoroughly explored, including detailed information on surgical techniques and their indications and outcomes. This book will be an invaluable resource for all who wish to learn more about the emerging role of palliative surgery.

Book Schein s Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery

Download or read book Schein s Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery written by Moshe Schein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ix Preface Smart surgeons learn from their own mistakes, smarter surgeons learn from mistakes of others, some never learn . . . You are a resident, overworked and constantly tired; sitting down with your mentor for a brief tutorial. What do you want to get out of these few minutes? To organize your thoughts and approaches to the particular problem; to learn how he -the weathered surgeon -"tackles it"; to grasp a few practical "recipes" or "goodies" and take home a message or two; to laugh a bit and unwind. This is also our goal in this book. We hope that you are not repelled or offended by the non-formal character of this book. This is how emergency abdominal surgery is taught best, by trial and error and repetitions, with emphasis on basics. This is not a "complete" textbook, nor is it a cookbook type manual or discussion of case studies; neither is it a collection of detailed lecture notes or exhaustive lists. Instead, it consists of a series of informal, uncensored, chats between experienced surgeons and their trainees. No percentages, series, elaborated figures or complicated algorithms are included; only a surgeon's narrative, explaining how "he does it" -based on his experience and state of the art knowledge of the literature. No references are included as it was our aim to put down nothing which has not been experienced, confirmed and practiced in our own hands.

Cognitive Pearls in General Surgery details the explicit thought processes and associations that underlie the understanding of the topics at hand, with the intent of enhancing the fun and enjoyment that only an informed and well-grounded practice of surgery can provide.
