Book Dogs Their Management and Treatment in Disease

Download or read book Dogs Their Management and Treatment in Disease written by Ashmont Ashmont and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dogs; Their Management and Treatment in Disease: A Study of the Theory and Pratice of Canine Medicine The rapid advancement in science has wrought many changes in the principles and practice of medicine; added new remedies to the resources of the physician; exploded many old theories, and dissipated countless fancies and prejudices. Well worn paths have been left, new fields traversed, and discoveries made, which aid not only in the cure, but in the prevention of disease. Important lessons have been taught, and the limits of knowledge extended, by trials of endurance which have developed unsuspected latent powers, both in man and animals. Further progress will yet be made, of which speculation is fruitless. To place before the reader a faithful exposition of medicine, as it exists at the present time, is the purpose of the author. No finished treatise is attempted, replete with scientific technicalities, calculated to confuse and mystify, but in simple, comprehensive language and expression, on these pages are described the prominent appearances in disease, and the manner of applying remedies, sustained largely by the results of personal observation. This book is submitted with the ardent hope it may be found a source of instruction, and aid in the care of man's true and faithful friend, the Dog. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kennel Diseases: Their Symptoms, Nature, Causes, and Treatment There are no specifics in canine practice. That is, no medicines which are sure cures, always, for the same diseases. Indeed, in many instances, a medicine which has cured a large number of cases may prove valueless in the next case, although it might seem precisely like the others. Again, oftentimes cures can be effected only in stages, as it were. That is, one class of drugs will accomplish a cer tain amount of good, and no more, and another class must be employed to secure greater gain. And so on; it being necessary often to resort to quite a large number of medicinal agents of radically different action before cures can be reached. Manifestly, therefore, he who undertakes to treat obstinate diseases especially should be fortified with as large a number of remedies as possible, that he may promptly substitute for it if one proves disappointing. This accounts for the different measures of treatment that I have recommended in so many instances, and always where difficulty is likely to be encountered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canine Pathology: Or a Description of the Diseases of Dogs, Nosologically Arranged, With Their Causes, Symptoms, and Curative Treatment As by common consent I appear to be considered the Father of Canine Pathology, it follows, of course, that it will be expected of me as a parent that I should from time to time be doing something for the child of my adoption. Not to disappoint such expectations, this edition will be found to present some important alterations and additions. The anecdotical portion, as not necessarily connected with the subject at large, has here given place to a more extended inquiry into the animal himself, and to the introduction of some canine diseases not noticed before. The matter of the work is now divided into three parts. The first embraces the Natural History of the Dog, with an Inquiry into his primeval origin, and into the probable sources of his prominent varieties. Tlie second part is, devoted to a theoretical and practical consideration of the System of Breeding and Rearing these Animals, with their general Treatment, as our subservients, and the means of keeping them in Health. The third part comprehends their Diseases, when their health has been attacked; the alphabetical arrangement of which, in former editions has given place in this to such a methodical classification as, while it renders it not less easy of reference to the amateur, will be more acceptable to the professional reader, from the relative view it will afford him of the various subjects thus congenerously grouped. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dog: And How to Break Him; With His Diseases and Methods of Cure IT is not irrelevant to a work like the one now offered to the notice of the public to take a retro spective glance at the subject on which it pro fesses to treat 5 but any very lengthened observa tions on the origin or natural history of the dog, whilst they could only be repetitions of a thrice told tale, familiar even in the nursery, would be superfluous in a small book, the end and aim of which is, to give practical instructions (the result of long practice) on the best methods of breeding and training dogs for the gun, and making them perfect in the field.
