Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables: Apples, Pears, Quinces Some of the more important facts concerning fungi (molds) should be kept in mind in dealing with fungus diseases of fruits. An important characteristic of most fungi is that they produce minute bodies called spores, which are usually the most important means by which fungi reproduce themselves and are distributed. Being small and light, spores are easily carried by wind, rain, insects, and other agents. Spores of several kinds of fungi that attack fruits are quite common on the soil surface and on all plant parts above ground. Spores on the surface of a fruit, under favorable conditions, produce fine fungus threads that may enter the fruit and cause disease. Fungus spores lie inert until temperature and moisture condi tions are favorable for their germination. The fungus threads they produce may or may not enter the fruit through the unbroken skin, but they are always more likely to enter if skin breaks are present. Factors that favor the development of each disease in storage, in transit, or on the market are discussed under appropri ate headings. Book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint written by Harry Warren Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Fruit Crops It is a curious but logical fact that in spite of a rapidly increasing population and an increased demand for fruit, there has been a decided decrease in the number of deciduous fruit trees in the United States during the last thirty years. With this marked decrease in the number of trees, there has been only a slight decrease in total production, and it is probable that there has been an increase in fruit which actually reaches the ultimate consumer. It is evident that diseases and insects have eliminated millions of fruit trees and that those which remain have been made much more productive owing to the control of pests. This more efficient and more stable production in spite of the increase in the number Of parasites has been made possible mainly by the scientific development of plant protection. Efficient plant protection has been made possible only by a thorough knowledge of the nature and cause of the diseases of plants.
